I have never understood why Amazing Grace is ever sung at a Funeral. It was written by the English Poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton. In his youth he was conscripted into service in the Royal Navy, then became involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade. The message is that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. It just sounds so damning about the person and I think we should be celebrating all the good things a person has done in their life.
