The 1st time I heard this in the 70s, I was caught off guard by the ending & laughed like hell!

I love it because it's the total flip side of Mary's theme song. Mary can turn the world on with her smile, but Phyllis?

When they sing "it sure isn't you", and her facial expression, I would crack up laughing!!

One of the best show themes ever. The MTM show had so many spin offs.

Stunning intro. "Who makes the warning bells of the cable cars play 'The Gang's All Here' ". Such a quality era, all the way around.

I couldn't agree more. I grew up with all the great shows of the 60's & 70's and loved their theme music, but this one takes the cake for all-time funniest.

Dick DeBenedictis conducted the music but STAN DANIELS wrote the lyrics. Here he is warming up the audience on the Mary Tyler Moore show kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4aziIB4j66IZtk "Who makes the fog surrounding the Golden Gate simply disappear? Phyllis... Phyllis... Who makes the warning bells on the cable cars play, "The Gang's All Here"? Phyllis... Phyllis... Who charms the crabs on Fisherman's Wharf right out of their shells? Who lights the lamps of Chinatown just by walking in view? Who? Phyllis! Phyllis! Phyllis......it sure isn't you."

The chorus line was wearing blackface. Oh lort!

My autistic friend pointed this out in his memoir. I thought this was his imagination but you both are correct. Hard to believe the producers didn't change it.

They did something sneaky. They put people in opposite black face and then shot it and processed it in negative. So technically the actors were not in blackface when it was shot. But it still has the same effect.

Unfortunately, to some degree stuff like that was still acceptable in the '70s, minstrel show references and so forth.

The footage is from the MGM musical "Babes on Broadway," which ends with a minstrel performance.
