Kris I noticed these flowers on our Castillonis over the weekend (May 19) and thought it rather strange - now I know! Good video thank you.

I grow Bamboo commercially, and have about 50 or so Phyllostachys, none of my crops are currently showing any signs of flowering including any of our 7 types of Bambusoides. Sometimes this will happen to plants, possibly as a response to stress. A few years back we had a Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' that flowered, while the rest of the crop remained normal. The plant did wither away and die, and I did not test the viability of the seeds, although in retrospect it could have been an interesting experiment to see if they would have germinated. I'll update my post if I notice anything this growing season, as our earliest shooters are just now coming to life.

Hi, I have a small bamboo collection and one example of the Castillonis variety. It started to flower in the early spring and is now flowering across the entire clump. I am based on the south Hampshire coast so our climate is not extreme althougb it is consistently warm compared to the rest of the UK. I am going to try propagation from the seeds.

Hi, I am in Coffs Harbour, Australia. We have a subtropical climate and I planted some Phyllostachys bambusoides castillonis about 20 years ago. It was slow to spread, over the years its height got to 4-5m. However, in recent years it has started to become invasive and the rhizomes are spreading at this stage up to 15m from the main plants. I am controlling it by removing any unwanted shoots. It seemed to look very shabby over the last year and I just realised it's flowering! I am very happy about this as I wondered how to control it in the future. It will be interesting to see if the spreading rhizomes will continue to produce new shoots next spring.

Mine is also flowering abundantly in Belgium. I am trying to sow the seeds at different time intervals (no result so far). Will try again next spring (sometimes frost can trigger germination)

Do you need to use root barrier for it along the fence? How do you keep it from getting too tall that bamboo can get 10 meters tall and might block all the overhead sun to your amazing garden one day? Beautiful bamboo I can’t find it where I am.

Root barrier is advisable but I haven't used any . This species doesn't get anywhere near 10m tall . More like 3/4m so not that imposing

Hi Kris. . very rare event happening there. . would be interesting to see if it flowers anywhere else in the world. . I don't have this specific species but do have alot of other Phyllostachys bamboo species so will keep an eye on them. . growing bamboo from seed is a very lengthy process. iv grown a few plants from seed in grow boxes then grown outside and still they are very immature plants. . id like to try to grow some of yours if you want to sell some seeds. I can always send you back some growing plants in a year or two

Hi Kris. I have two of these (Phyllostachys Bambusoides Castillonis) as part of a larger mixed bamboo hedge, and both are dramatically in flower just now (May 2019). Their nurseryman who sold it to us tells us this is very widespread now in this variety, not just in his stock. It looks wonderful just now while in flower, but I guess it will look dead soon, which will be very sad as they're lovely xamples. Does anyone yet know whether they regenerate from the roots? We have exceptionally good specimens with strong roots.

Hi Kris, I have been watching a lot of your videos lately and I am taking great inspiration from them. I love your enthusiasm for what you do and how you have transformed your garden into a sub tropical paradise. I just have a question for you... how did the cacti get on that I saw planted out in some of your videos from 2015? I am just curious because I am planning on putting some cacti in my garden this spring, down here in Surrey... and plan on using similar varieties... Cheers

Hi, the cacti are generally ok. The roots rotted on one but the plant is still alive and will reroot. Good luck.

I think it was Albert Einstein said that nature can teach everything we need to know and can foresee future events this plant this bamboo could possibly know that it is not going to survive so it is in its natural procreation.

You sound like you're worried about your plants being wiped out, maybe you might have to get different plants. Are frost tolerance. I have thousands of Siberian cedar seeds I have about 200 that are germinated at the moment I can get food from that in the future very nutritious pine nuts and I'm hoping that the Siberian Cedar can survive- 40/70 th below
