Welcome to our in-depth tutorial on physical modelling synthesis! We'll kick things off by breaking down a simple serum patch and gradually advancing to a more sophisticated simulation using Max 4 Live. Learn how to replicate the intricate characteristics of acoustic instruments through digital waveguides, starting with the basics and progressing to advanced techniques.

about #Astrobear:
Astrobear is the electronic music project of John Janiczek. This project explores multiple genres with a common theme of blending polar opposites like aggressive electro bass lines with gentle ambient melodies. Astrobear was discovered when his remix of Hyperlandia by Deadmau5 was selected as the winner of the Microsoft Original by Design competition. Astrobear released his first track with the Mau5trap label, titled “So Says the Sea”, as a part of the “We Are Friends 11” compilation album. Building off of this momentum, Astrobear is planning to grow the project beyond the bedroom producer gig with an increased focus on releasing and performing his music.

This is really interesting and as someone who is trying to study about this technique I personally would be very interested in the details of how each wave guide was made and how to determine the amount of delay and the amount of low pass filtering with each passing cycle. The concept of a convolution reverb for the body of the instrument is something I want to learn more about

Glad to hear it bigbat. I feel like I might need to start the series over because there are a lot of fundamentals I need to cover for the advanced stuff to make sense. I underestimated how deep this subject was when I made this first video… but I have been studying the literature abut there is more content for this coming soon either way - I might just repeat the basics in a more detailed way and build up to the advanced stuff

This video and it's follow up are the best/ most digestible tutorials I've seen on waveguide synthesis. I almost didn't click on these because I've known about these concepts for a while, as well as some of the more "advanced" implementations, but I genuinely learned some new things from this video (thanks!). I'm self-taught with dsp and not up on all the math (trying to work on that) so I appreciate the teaching approach you're taking here as well. I've been able to learn a lot from academic papers but it's often difficult to parse without having a solid foundation. I agree, the most interesting application of physical modeling is the ability to push it to the extremes and create totally new sounds that still have an element of realistic response, expressivity, or tangibility. I'd love to see videos about other waveguide models for other types of instruments or resonant bodies.

Wow thanks for the detailed reply, would love to chat more with you. I’m definitely planning on making more videos in this realm. I also realized as I was learning more that I had a bit of Dunning-Krueger going on, and started to realize how much I still didn’t know as I’m making my way through the Julius O Smith textbook on this subject. So, I’m kind of making the videos as I go - but glad you enjoyed the first one. Hoping I’ll have the next one in the series by next week!

Thank you soooo much, I am interesting to see something about Reed or Brass model cause all physical modeling tutorials are about pluck model :) do you use VCV Rack? I don't have Max and I hope to see your next tutorial using VCV Rack .... I think VCV Rack tools can do this stuff.

Awesome! I had a little break from physical modeling - it is pretty dense but I am reading through a textbook on it and planning on making another vid. The book covers reeds and brass so hopefully I’ll get there eventually 😬 I will take a look at using VCV rack for a future video but can’t make promises because I don’t know how to use it at the moment. Thanks for the feedback though!

Cool video. I would like to hear in the same style about modeling bows (violin, etc.)

Good suggestion! I tried making this patch more bowed by making the “noise burst” have a slow attack but I didn’t really nail it yet. I’ll take a look at some papers and see if I can figure it out.
