I started suffering from this when I was 21 while doing calisthenics. It’s a little hard reading all the people older than me that have been dealing with this pain longer than I’ve been alive (28years). I’ve tried everything. Doctors, specialist, physio, osteopath, acupuncture etc. I’ve been working out like hell strengthening my lover half. But guess what? For absolutely nothing. I had to take 3 weeks off work recently because I was struggling to get out of bed. I’ve just bought a Simba mattress which cost nearly 1K so let’s hope, but I’m at my wits end now. Had enough. Least I know I’m not alone and I genuinely feel for you all that have suffered so much longer than myself. You guys are more stronger than you give yourself credit for

Hang in there, Corey! Did you first test out to see if changing the surface (aka the mattress) you're sleeping on is likely to help the problem? Maybe you've gotten the new mattress by now... if so, how's it going?

I've recently invested in an SI belt and it has helped tremendously with the pain. I even wear it to bed. That along with some strengthening exercises have reduced the pain. I've had this pain for about 15 years and no doc could help me diagnose what it was. I feel your pain, literally.

Suffering back pain and coccyx pain for nearly 4 years , seen 8 specialist, none did a physical examination. They don't have a clue. Thanks doc please do a video on coccyx pain . Have had this problem for 3 years , cannot sit but my MRIs don't show any problems so docs don't do anything

Yeah, I also noticed it. My GP sent me to specialist that told me nothing wrong just so harden fat.. What! Then 1year after I'm still complaining at my GP he told me to go see the specialist if been at last year I told him I don't want to go see that moron again. He said no it's a different guy. I know he must do an exam and he dis not do it the previous time so I took all my clothes off in a desperate attempt for him to look at my buttocks. We did some movement test but he told me its hamstring. I hope there Doctors know how hopeless they make us feel when they are doing such shitty jobs.

I dont understand that. Isn't the whole point of seeing your doctor to help resolve an issue? If a consultation and required tests do not uave answers..... it's time to think outside the box. How can a doctor accept not finding anything while you are still in tremendous pain? It's not hysteria.... somerhing is wrong so wake up Dotors and continue doing whatever is needed to make an accurate diagnosis. After all they are being paid to relieve pain and pinpoint the source of the pain to help their patient

I'm 71, have had SI joint pain for many years. I'd liken it to an ice pick being stuck in my lower back. Probably the result of youth sports injuries and two king-size babies. It seems as if most docs are reluctant to diagnose SI joint dysfunction, so I've gone most of my adult life without treatment. Even had a doc assume that I was looking for attention. Short-term steroids for another ailment made me feel WONDERFUL, but we can't take them for long without bad side effects. I wear a strap to support the joint when I know I'm going to be on my feet for a long time, but it's a pain in the neck to take it off, then remove my pants when I have to go to the bathroom. Trying to strengthen the associated muscles, but it's hard to exercise with that kind of pain.

SWEETHEART I'M WITH YOU. I'M 64. AND BEEN DEALING W THIS PAIN SINCE AGE 23. WORKED AS CAREGIVER X 45 YRS. 1 KING SIZED BABY ALSO, BACK LABOR, BACK PAIN THROUGHOUT PREG. ETC. I'M A KAISER PT ( FOR YRS). IN 2015 DUE TO OPIOID CRISIS, THEY TOOK ME OFF OPIOIDS. I'M ALLERGIC OR HAD SIDE EFFECTS TO THE ALTERNATIVE DRUGS. NOW I'M ON SUBOXONE' OFF LABEL' FOR PAIN. I HATE TO SAY IT BUT THOSE DRUGS ALLOWED ME TO WORK AND HAVE A LIFE. I NEVER ABUSED. MDs ORDERS ALL THE WAY. DUE TO MEDS GOING AWAY I HAD TO SELL MY HOME, SPEND DOWN ASSETS AND APPLIED FOR SSI. SINGLE, NEVER MARRIED. NOW LIVING IN SEC 8 HOUSING. WHEN DOC PULLED THE MEDS I FELT MY REAL PAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES. O M G!! IT WAS SO EXCRUCIATING. WHEN SHE ADDED BACK THE SUBOXONE IT WAS LIKE I WASN'T TAKING ANYTHING. TOLD HER ( MY DOC) THIS X 1 YR. SHE TREATS ALL PTS AS THOUGH WE ARE ALL ADDICTS. ITS HUMILIATING AND DEGRADING. NEXT SHE TOLD ME TO DRINK A SHOT OR 2 OF ALCOHOL (WHAT!!!) TO BUMP UP THE SUBOXONE. THIS DRUG HAS A DETERRANT IN IT SO YOU CANNOT BECOME INTOXICATED EVEN FROM ALCOHOL. IT DOES HAVE A NUMBING EFFECT ( THE ALCOHOL) BUT MUST HAVE 3 X THE ACCEPTABLE AMT. I HAVE FAM HISTORY OF ALCOHOL ABUSE!! CANN9T DO THIS!! WHAT THIS DOC IS THINKING BAFFLES MY MIND! THE PT I WORK WITH AT KP REALLY DOESN'T SEEM TO KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING AND SHE'S BEEN THERE FOR YRS AND YRS. NO ONE HAS EVER SUGGESTED SI JOINT ISSUES..CAN U BELIEVE THAT?? I'M GOING TO TRY THE TROCANTERIC BELT. I'M HAVING DIFFICULTY DOING BRIDGING EXERCISE AS MY LEGS SPASM. I'M SUPPLIMENTING WITH MAGNESIUM, VIT D, C, B-50'S, FISH OIL. IVE BEEN ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS BUT SINCE IVE SETTLED INTO MY OWN PLACE X yr AND LIFE HAS CALMED DOWN A BIT, I DO NOT NEED AS MUCH; SO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REDUCE DOSAGE. SEEING DOC IN JULY. I'VE BEEN DOING MY OWN RESEARCH AND CONCLUDED I HAVE PIRAFORMIS SYNDROME. SHE DID AN MRI THAT CONFIRMED. IT ALSO CONFIRMED THAT SINCE THE OPIOIDS WENT AWAY MY ARTHRITIS ETC HAD WORSENED GREATLY. WITHOUT THE PAIN RELIEF I'M PRETTY MUCH STUCK IN A CHAIR. I GET OUT AND WALK A MILE ON MOST DAYS. I SHOOT FOR EVERY OTHER DAY. COVID AND ISOLATION DID NOT HELP. NOW MY LEGS ARE SWELLING AND A FEW DAYS AGO MY R LEG STARTED DRAINING LYMPH FLUID. GREAT!! I STILL NEED COVID SHOT BUT HESITATE IF ANOTHER HEALTH PROBLEM IS GOING ON. CALLING GP IN AM. THIS IS JUST A DOMINOE EFFECT OF HELLACIOUS EVENTS COMPOUNDING. ITS FRIGHTENING. DON'T WORRY I HAVE ALREADY SHARED THIS W KP. WHAT A GIGANTIC 'CLUSTER FLUFF' THIS HAS BECOME. SOME PEOPLE STILL NEED THESE MEDS IF NOT JUST TO HELP THEM GET THE PT THEY NEED TO STRENGTHEN THE RIGHT MUSCLES. I'M WAY TO YOUNG FOR ALL THIS. MY SON AGE 40, DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME. DOESNT GET THAT EVERYONE TAKING OPIOIDS IS NOT AN ADDICT. SOME OF US ARE IN HELLACIOUS UNTREATABLE PAIN. WE NEED SOMETHING TO RELIEVE IT. AFTER ALL THESE YRS I'VE CONVINCED MYSELF I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. IN THE LAST YR I'VE GONE FROM BEING ABLE TO WALK 6 MILES A DAY AND BEING THOUGHT TO BE 34 YRS OLD TO BEING CALLED ELDERLY WHEN LEAVING MY MDS OFFICE CAUSEI HAD TO WALK OUT USING 2 CANES. ITS INSANE. PULLING THOSE MEDS WAS TRAUMATIZING. ITS LIKE STARTING OVER AGAIN AFTER BEING INJURED AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME. WAKING UP THE NEXT DAY IN A BADLY DAMAGED AND INJURED BODY IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN!! I'M INFURIATED AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THIS NIGHTMARE STARTED. I GET WHY PAIN PTS ARE KILLING THEMSELVES. ON ONE PARANOID NIGHT I EVEN STOPPED TO CONSIDER WHETHER THIS WAS PART OF OUT GOVTS LEFT WING COMMY PLOT TO EXTERMINATE THE WEAKER AMONG US. ( THIS WAS AFTER CUOMOS NURSING HOME SCREW UP. 🙄😬🤥. I STOPPED HERE AND STARTED READING THE POSTS. YOUR ENTRY RESONATED WITH ME. SORRY FOR THE LONG RANT AND I WUSH YOU GOOD HEALTH AND SUCCESS IN FINDING RELIEF FOR YOUR SI PAIN MY DEAR. I have all the tell tale signs BUT also have low back pain 🤷🏻‍♀️😩 Back in November I bent over heard a pop in my low back and then IMMEDIATE executing pain. After 8 hours of THE WORST pain of my life (I’ve given birth to 3 children with no drugs), and unable to move at all (peed in bed 😩) we ended up calling paramedics. They had to give me 3 doses of fentanyl before the paramedics attempted to move me from the bed to their stretcher. I was hospitalized for 3 days in extreme pain and bed ridden. Been doing PT since November with no relief. Today I got 2 epidural injections at L5-S1 and S1-S2 because the doctor thinks it’s my bulging discs and anular fissure causing all my symptoms. He did say if the steroid shots don’t help then we’d look at my SI joint. I’m so frustrated and tired of being in pain 😭 Low back pain radiating up my back and neck AND down my leg but not like sciatica. I’ve had sciatica when pregnant. This pain is different. It’s more localized leg pain in my left knee, ankle, and foot. What’s really interesting and not sure if a coincidence, I had shingles a couple of months ago and the rash also appeared on my left leg (inner thigh) and I want to say the low back pain and left knee/ankle/foot pain became worse after the shingles. Any advice, opinions, suggestions?? I’d appreciate any input ❤

I've dealt with this since last October and it's now July! All I did was bend over to use a dust pan and I must have twisted wrong when I stood up. My doctor had xrays done in January and all it seemed to show was hip arthritis. Basically, he gave me pain meds and shrugged his shoulders. I asked about PT and he said he didn't think it would help me. I'm tired of not being able to move without pain. Some days I'm only up to the bathroom and back to the recliner. The pain is right where you described it to be! And I think I'm headed to a chiropractor now. Thanks for this video!

Hey Kathy! Welcome and thanks for watching. Yes, so now you need to follow what I call a "Pain Relief Process"... a systematic approach (not a sheet of exercises) to solve it. Goal would be to find ONE motion that improves how you're moving... and also teach you new strategies for moving and relieving your pain. End goal is to teach you how to fix yourself. Honestly, would be difficult to recommend exercises without knowing more specifics here. Are you open to potentially working together? No pressure, but if so- just visit www.drcharliejohnsonpt.com/apply and set up a time to chat. Hang in there Kathy!

How often do you find the problem is the feet causing pain in the SI Joint?

It's good video but mind you a patient with a disc injury at L4-L5 and or L5S1 will also have these similar symptoms. Ie pain with sitting and standing, cross or lifting their legs etc to mention a few. And a lot of patients with disc injuries can actually develop SI joint instability/ SI joint issues after developing a disc injury at the lower levels. The symptoms are normally in your lower back, however SI joint pain from what i understand is a lot more easier to pin point unlike pain from a disc injury which is all over and usually consists of scatica as well with tingling or numbness travelling down to your calf (and feet in a lot cases depending on the nerve root that's getting impinged)

I"m not watching it again, but didn't he say a clear sign was it being painful to push on those two bones sticking out above your back? I have exactly what you describe, I'm a little confused because that joint is right by the sciatic isn't it? The herniation causes more spastic pain ( I think), than a joint pain would. I get joint pain in my elbow, it just hurts sometimes, especially moving the joint. With the herniated disc at that area its positional, like sitting while driving and things like that.

Can a herniated/bulging disc affect the SI joint? I had classic symptoms of herniated disc with terrible sciatica. My sciatica has improved and my back feels some better, but I still have pain getting up and down, turning over in bed and crossing my legs. I still struggle walking up and down the stairs and if I walk too fast, I get a deep pain in my right butt cheek and literally have to stop until the pain eases up. I am wondering if there is something more then a herniated disc going on here.

@@yasminzakarya I had same symptoms, this video kind of rules out SI joint, I'd never even heard of it til the other day. However, an x ray showed a messed up L7, S1, so thats right by the sciatic, so likely a herniated disc. That takes time to heal, and strength exercises help. I"m about three months in, about 70% than three months ago, and sort of the reverse. At first I couldn't lay down so hardly slept and sitting out of hte question. I stood and walked for about a month. Now sleeping is fine, even without elevation. The videos on strength training really help. I get spasms during hte day, but gotta just 'walk it off'. Wall squats and warrior poses are the main thing that eliminated pain. Surprised by the number of people who have had the same, even my mom. Takes about a half a year, and you have to work it. The healthcare system is pretty much useless in this regard, they gave me pain pills and they started affecting my liver immediately. The pain is either the spastic pain, which drungs don't help anyway, or strenght training helps. My x ray really only confirmed what I already know, and frankly an MRI is cost prohibitive but wouldn't help much I doubt anyway.

Dr. Johnson, very informative video. In your experience, have you ever heard of SI joint pain causing radiating/shooting pain down the right thigh? Almost every time my wife has excruciating shooting pain down her right thigh, one of her SI joints has been stuck (most commonly one side is stuck anteriorly and requires a Chicago Roll posterior adjustment which produces an audible clunk and her shooting pain doesn't occur again. She's been dealing with this pain for almost 2 years and as of yesterday received her first right SI joint steroid injection to see if this helps. She also looks to have a misaligned pubic bone with her right side being more prominent but unsure if this is due to her hip replacement. We've seen 16 doctors over the last 2 years and still no solid answer to what happened to start this issue and what is actually causing it. She had her total hip replacement at age 15, after normal recovery, she never had these pain patterns, was able to run, jump, bike, etc. Hip replacement has been evaluated by 3 orthos and they all agree it looks great...actually better than they expected 10 years later. My wife can go days with walking and have no pain but suddenly one of her SI joints will get stuck and cause the pain pattern. She can do the same leg workout 2-3 times and have no issues, but then on the 4th time, she has pain. It is such an interesting, frustrating case that has stumped so many physicians. Hoping you could help!!

My left SI has hurt for 45 years. 8 visit my chiro alot. I began feeling like my right groin area (inner part of leg joins the pelvis) needed to pop. Never went fully away. Doc sent me for PT which I am currently attending. I believe the exercises are helping. That outer hip also would sometimes ache so bad at night that I would dream I was trying to find a position to relieve that pain as the pain was so intense I would feel it in my dreams. I heard about a natural enzyme supplement. It relieved my pain in about a week and I stayed on it 2 mo. Chiro later said it's been around forever and is great. I found bottle of 800 on Amazon for around $40. Wobenzym N. Enteric coated so they are easy to swallow, smells "herbal", but if you find that offensive this is what I do: put 2 pills in each compartment of a 7-day pill case and leave it open for a week and the smell is nearly gone. I live in Florida and the humidity doesn't degrade the pills. Take at night so it's w/o food. I was off it for a couple months (didn't need it) but hip started complaining. Took 2 for 2 nights and the pain left. That was 4 weeks ago. So I keep it around to use as needed. It also helped some of the arthritis in my fingers, but not my SI. If you are elderly or have osteoporosis, manual chiropractic can become injurious. Find a chiropractor that uses the Atlas Orthogonal technique AND uses the activator on your spine and extremity joints. (Some AO drs only adjust the Atlas and ignore the rest of the body on the mistaken belief that once the Atlas is adjusted the rest of the body will compliantly obey😂. As if.) Mine is Keith Fady, Largo, FL...hope it's ok to share a GREAT doctor-I drive 65 minutes to get to him.

I am so glad to discover your videos. I plan to watch more of them. I am 51 y/o female with lower back pain for years now, diagnosed as a bulging disc at the L5-S1. My pain has debilitated me. I cannot stand up straight. It feels like my back is fused so that I have to stoop forward. This makes it impossible to walk more than 20 feet or stand up for more than a couple of minutes before having to sit down. Having an autoimmune disease and taking corticosteroids has caused such a weight gain that it has exacerbated my back pain 10 fold. I have done chiropractic, which helps a bit but doesn't last. I have done PT, but that caused more pain to the point that I couldn't get out of bed. I am now using a wheelchair when I am away from the house. I'm at the point where I'm looking for any remedy to get back on my feet for good without surgeries or shots. I'm feeling like that will be my only choice though. I am currently doing some limited mobility exercises which helps the muscles around the area strengthen and diet as well for weight loss. I will be glad to have ANY recommendations on how to best help myself through this. I want to walk again!

I picked up a plank and hurt my SI 10years now and I still have hard rounded balls in that aria. Went to the doc but he said its harden fat. Iv had this ditch in my buttocks as far as I can remember. Iv also been sitting cross legs most of my life. I get a nice tingling feeling in the back when a do the pigeon post also a bit itchy afterwards. Doing a butt brige is really hard for me. I also experience extreme sharp pain on the lower hamstring area on the one side. Stuff hips has been a thing I live with all my life. I can't put socks on specially on the one side and if I force it the leg loses all feeling. Iv tried a couple a stretching techniques but resulted in foot drop. Like in your other video explaining that it all comes from up stream but I really think my SI got triggers by an inactive glute mussel or something as I have a clear ditch in the middle of my butt that's been there since I can remember .. I thought it was due to a bicycle accident where I got some blood under the knew but I think it is something to do before then. My hip rotation is funny to say inward is fine its outward that hurts but when I'm on my back relaxed I can't get my leg to stay strat. It rotates outwards automatically. People have asked me what is wrong with your butt but I can't tell them as I don't know. I was in a accident at the age of 2 but my mom does not really talk about it and even if the hip rotation got hurt then they would not have been able to pick it up. It could also just be form sitting cross legs as a child. Iv notes this imbalance in my body at about 9year of age.

Hey Mona! Good question and maybe something for a future video… so, possibly… I guess.. but here’s how I’d think about it. If scoliosis were the cause of your pain, and I’m assuming your scoliosis has been present for years now, why SI joint pain now? Meaning, scoliosis is fairly common… and often shows up on images and gets blamed for the cause of pain. But, the truth is that if scoliosis is really the cause of the SI Joint pain- did the SI Joint pain begin when the scoliosis began? Get my point?

Are you a medical doctor? Or have a doctorate in PT? If it’s the later, you are misleading the public as to your qualifications.

Not sure this warrants a reply (because it’s just silly)... But in the video I say “Dr Charlie Johnson, PT” So- I’m a doctor of PT. How is this misleading? 🤔 Perhaps I’m missing something

@Nuna Ubzness "Medical" doctors don't know this stuff, physical therapy doctors do. What a ridiculous, snooty, UNEDUCATED comment you have made.

What test will detect this? I had a cat scan but didn’t pick up anything. I’m having lower right back/hip/thigh pain with all the mobility symptoms you said for over 4 months now.

try wrapping something around your waist just below your hip bones. Ace bandages work...two or three. If this solves your problem. It is your SI joint...stay juicy 8)

If you have pain on the side of your spine in the “dimple” or indented (on either side) area it’s Sl pain. You can press in on the area and feel an indentation on backside of your hips. That’s your Sl Joint

@@littledancingfawn good tip. I tried another test I saw on you tube that confirmed it was si pain for me however it went away completely now. Thankfully lol.

@@drcharliejohnson my english ist not so good but i try to explain: it all began last summer with a new hometrainer. i was just simply overweight to sit onto this hard saddle doing sport without any pain onto my coccyx! these coccyx issues begun to get chronic after sitting n trying to stand up very slowly from any chairs because of deeply pain all time. but couple months later it was getting better - even though still regularly make sport on this hometrainer 2/week but what is left is getting easily a pressure point mostly about 95% on left SacroiliacJoint area! while i am doing sports i fell no any pain but sitting especially at nights, this area is very vulnerable just by sitting little bit more on the left buttock than right!
