The first family of plant-based food is back!
Ann Crile Esselstyn and Jane Esselstyn join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll for one of the most lively interviews ever featured on The Exam Room™ Podcast.
The mother and daughter talk about what it means to be a plant-based woman warrior and the inspiration for their cookbook. Jane explains their recipe creation process while Ann talks about the amazing amount of energy she still has well into her golden years. She does more in a day than most women half her age!
Ann also talks about the evolution of the family’s diet and the surprising menu they ate the night before her wedding to Caldwell Esselstyn years before his landmark research.
Most importantly, there is a sense of empowerment, hope, and knowledge that they bring that can inspire women no matter where they are in life or with their health.

I just purchased and sent this book to my 94 year old mother. My mother knows I eat a whole food plant based diet and she is often flustered when it comes to making meals for me. Even at her age she feels she needs to have something in her house that her kids can eat. This book will give her some information on what she can prepare for me when I visit. She will also benefit from eating the recipes herself. Bonus. Thank you Esselstyn girls.

After being an overweight junk food vegan for close to 7 years I decided to take another chance and lose weight for good. Reading dr. McDougall's Starch Solution and watching every video with Dr. Barnard made me give up oily, fake meats, vegan cheese and beloved vegan restaurants. I am lucky to L-O-V-E whole foods. I just received the Be a Plant Based Woman Warrior cookbook and subscribed to Jane's KZbin channel. The recipes are easy to make and absolutely delicious! I admire how down to earth and knowledgeable the entire Esselstyn family is.

On a side note, it is not necessary to trim, cut down bushes, and mow plants down to a few inches. As long as we do our duty to care for by ensuring the abundance of native biodiversity---wildlife will take care of them. Additionally, it will only benefit us by challenging our intolerance by exercising more tolerance of other life forms to be and exist as they are.

When they mention people eating road kill and cow's tongue, this reminds me of nose to tail eating which is something I would rather not deal with and a major reason why I went vegan and now whole food vegan.

even though I'm a female that has difficulties too speaking about all this - I think it's important to talk about - especially on the animal's behalves - for what happens to them. If we're able to explain our body parts and what we don't like, then we can better communicate what likely an animal doesn't like - male or female - if the body parts are very similar.

43:30 I went vegan because I hit rock bottom too. That's why I am doing my best to make veganism in the public eye and accepted as part of everyday life. If it becomes a part of identity of everyone - then it's not as hard. Right now there's a separation of veganism from those who aren't - to get past that is to give people the thought that they can be plant-based in their life.

I think I'm going to wait for the CUVA book to come out - where maybe it relates to animal health that carnists disrupt. To me, it's seems so difficult to understand the depth and complexity of intrusion to animals - to be able to discuss everything more openly and freely with a better ear is great for me! Then we will have a deeper connection to what's going on for ourselves and then animals. I just think the reproductive intrusions in an animal's life is the most disruptive to nature of everything we do to animals - and that's what to me props up the animal ag industry. To me, if we really get at the core of all this - we can split off animal living from human interference to avoid animal agriculture. It doesn't make sense the levels of money we give to prop up animals that're an artificial variation of their species to what they were in nature. How much money should we give to getting in the way of animal reproductive autonomy to keep artificial species going?

Serious question. I'm a vegan going on about a year now. No negatives. Not going back, significant needed weight loss. Feeling great with more energy. I keep reading comments, however, about people that were vegan have gone away from it due to declining health. I see no research supporting a reason if they were eating vegan in a responsible, healthy way. Reasons that might make sense are.... 1. They're lying. People with an agenda aren't above this. 2. Possibl food allergies. 3. Eating like these women are alluding to..... Not doing their due diligence in eating a complete, healthy vegan diets. Could there be any other reason. Anyone, please chime in.

If I may, it is not popular to be a vegan. It can be hard on the individual to constantly having to reasonably justify why one does not want to participate in such cruelty by needlessly exploiting fellow animals. It is also not convenient to be mindful and kind toward fellow animals. As their lives are so heavily subsidized by tax payer money--- consuming their body parts are ever more cheaper and readily available everywhere. Lastly, evidence based nutrition is not taught to most health professionals and the public. Therefore, many vegans find themselves learning about evidence based nutrition on their own. There are 3 main nutrients that everybody should be aware of and may need supplementation. 1. Vitamin D---based on ones geographic latitude the sun may not shine enough for us to receive the hormone. 2. Vitamin B12---humanity has so harshly destroyed the soil and the waterways it is no longer safe to rely on the environment for the bacteria. 3. Iodine---another consequence of us destroying the soil the mineral may not be enough growing into the plants. Unless one is regularly consuming sea veggies such as 2 sheets of nori, it would be the safest to take a supplement of 150mcg/day. Especially, since iodized salt is just more salt. Frankly, the sun and the soil provides everything we need. But we have so disrespected the environment supplementation such as the bacteria B12 is now our safest source. It is not that the plant and fungi kingdom is insufficient---it is us that are consuming them insufficiently.

warrior is like being impervious to issues. Like popeye with spinach. I feel that going vegan keeps you from having health issues that're too embarrassing to talk about - and because they're embarrassing - you end up avoiding treatment. When you go plant-based, you don't have to get into situations that're hard to get out of. 38:10

36:13 this is why I'm glad to not eat animals - because the level of grossness is too high. There's definitely many animal products I wouldn't go back to - like liverwurst, ham, salisbury steak, scrapple, offal, gizzards, cud, etc. I bet if I wasn't vegan - I'd have a lot of peer pressure to eat really gross foods that I'm glad I don't have to deal with now.

What a weird idea to cook a meal or bake a cake you don’t want more of 😅 I’d rather control my weight by any other means. Well, not any: animal products are out of the question, I cook at home from scratch, I hardly use sugar or white flour. I do use healthy oils (unsaturated fats), however, because the science is very clear on them: unless you’re overdoing it, they’re definitely healthy, as are unprocessed nuts, seeds etc.

44:32 I think we should get veganism out of the 'boulevard of broken dreams' stage where the vegans see others around them fail from health issues until they're walking by themselves to being able to be like a warrior and gather the army to fight against animal products head-on while people are still alive - instead of dying from animal products.
