Didn't have time to see this all just yet, but Kittel, Griffiths, and Landau were my mainstays in grad school and undergrad. I also spent a LOT of time with Sakurai. My Prof also recommended Shankar and he also wrote his own (Desai). Quantum is the funnest thing to study IMO. I even once tracked down topological quantum computing, by Jiannis Pachos, and emailed the author for more problems XD. Always regretted never getting into advanced quantum, QFT, QCD, the Standard model, or GR but I want to one day. And I DEF want to apply some of the stuff I learned (I have no idea how ;_;)

'Clearly a book hoarder', couldn't relate more! I've always kept books/notes/files from subjects previously covered because you just don't know when they may come in handy. Also, seeing books that I've managed to read almost cover-to-cover neatly lined up on a shelf instantly fills me up with energy to try and continue with that momentum. What's your strategy to balance watching video lectures and reading books for content intake (particularly for Physics)? Do you prefer one over the other when first approaching a new concept or is it a neat case of 50/50?
@OmarKhanMOK3 жыл бұрын
@@Anastasia-Marchenkova Yeah I prefer books too. But tbh, I'm not sure how I would have developed an intuition for Linear Algebra or signal processing concepts like Fourier Transforms without watching video lectures + animations. You're right about the upper level classes not having as many online video resources that go into the topic at length/in depth. I was just recently doing an Advanced Circuits Class, when I realized that for the first time I couldn't find a long playlist on YT consisting of full-length lectures discussing the topic I was studying at Uni. So yeah, in those cases you have to turn to the classics. Btw, in addition to the excellent Art of Electronics by Paul Horowitz, you might also like uE Circuits by Sedra/Smith and uE Circuit Design by Jaeger. The Sedra/Smith one, in particular, approaches concepts from the semiconductor physics lens (which you might like), while the Jaeger one is more digestible for EECS students.

I think you should make a sequel of this video covering how do you actually read a book. Like do you go through the whole index and book topics then read it without too much stress on equations etc etc. Everyone has got a style to read book, what’s your style? I think you are pretty productive with reading books.
@purushottamparakh51653 жыл бұрын
@@Anastasia-Marchenkova please focus on how to deal with math part e.g. you just see an equation on first read and instead of picking pen and paper you try to just make sense out of it verbally and then move on or When you actually encounter a equation you invest a lot of time correlating equation with concept and give up on loose corner or you try to resolve it fully. Do you solve excercises? do you try to find forums discussing book problems ? Or somehow see if you can get the solution manuals. How you make sure that there is no gap in your understanding? Do you make notes? Etc etc

landau and lifshitz are highly thought of in the West, but are graduate physics text books. I made the mistake of believing I could learn classical mechanics from their volume one alone which I found too difficult at the time. @@Anastasia-Marchenkova Like you I hate using screens to do anything substantial. I end up printing it out. A book or thesis requires no power to function and has an unrivalled navigability factor. Real world random access, the unbeatable thumb! I enjoy the mental landscape created in the brain of any particular book, due to it being a real object. It is easy to pinpoint information like a bee that has mapped its favourite food plants in its brain. I love the depth of understanding gained from a STEM textbook. It literally makes the world go round and most people don't understand it. Humanity's greatest achievement by far. Thanks for allowing me to interrupt your busy life with these pesky electronic messages and your kind response. All the best in your future endeavours. I wish I had intellectual parents who I could rely on for good advice on all aspects of life. I'm grateful for the rather privileged background that I grew up in compared to most people in the world. I mean I always had all the basic necessities in life. However it would've been so much better if, for example, I had a copy of the Feynman lectures lying around in my house when I was a child.
@OmarKhanMOK3 жыл бұрын
Yes, much like wealth, exponential accumulation of knowledge across generations is a real thing. But that's the thing with life. There will always be certain things we will long for, that others might already have. I'm sure there are things that Anastasia would like that we may already have (a beard at 20 in my case?, haha). The secret, however, is to just work harder than everyone else and believe in yourself. I know it may sound cliche, but trust me, those two are the only things in your control. It's never too late to pick up Feynman's Lectures (hosted on a website now), and solidify your Physics background. There's a quote that I once heard, "Everyone has unimaginable strength inside of them. However, if you do not face challenges/obstacles, that strength lies dormant within you." So if anything, the fact that you may not have had the most academically inclined parents can be a massive advantage/inspiration for you, if you choose to perceive it that way.
