Pilots leave a long slice of pi over Austin skies
Five sky-writing planes circled downtown to write out in numerical form π, the Greek letter pi, the mathematical ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The calculation produces an unending series of digits, beginning with 3.141592.
Why pi?
Friday is March 14, or 3.14, National Pi Day. That would have been the day for the "Pi in the Sky" art installation, conceived as a visual pun by the San Francisco-based artist ISHKY, but the forecast for Friday called for cloudy skies and drizzle.
So Austin had its piece of pi Thursday. Each of the 314 numbers written in the sky was roughly a quarter mile wide and was created using a technique that resembled dot-matrix printing, with clouds instead of ink forming the numerals, by AirSign, a Florida aerial advertising company.
The planes began the effort at 6:28 p.m., pi times two.
"Some say (pi) represents a universal truth, a common understanding that rises above language, borders, affiliations and beliefs," the artist said in a statement. "By flying Pi overhead and encouraging a simultaneous lifting of our collective gaze, the artwork establishes a momentary shared focal point, a prevailing and unfurling truth upon which we all can unite."
