The year 2018 will prove an excellent vintage for the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget! Demonstrating inexhaustible vitality in its quest for infinite slenderness, the Maison is establishing two world records setting the crowning touch to the 60th anniversary celebrations of its iconic Altiplano collection. The first with the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic, the world’s thinnest self-winding watch at just 4.30mm thick. The second with the Altiplano Ultimate Concept, developed by the Piaget “Research and Innovation” division: the world’s thinnest mechanical hand-wound watch at just 2mm thick, the same size as the historical movement - Calibre 9P - to which it pays eloquent tribute.
A new high point in the quest for supreme thinness, stemming from a combination of tradition and creative strength. This technical and aesthetic prodigy stems from four years of research and development and involved a team of three engineers working in closer cooperation with watchmakers, designers, case and movement constructors at every stage of its creation.
It also called for the implementation of unprecedented technical solutions pushing the boundaries of micromechanics and for the filing of five patents. This model represents a successful feat of miniaturisation that only Piaget could pull off, as it perpetually lives up to its motto “Always do better than necessary”.
Nurtured by its unique history and its exceptional mastery of ultra-thin horology, Piaget once again reaffirms its singularity and boldly raises the issues of miniaturisation’s technical limits that the Manufacture continues to roll back… and does so while unfailingly demonstrating its extreme concern for elegance.

Amazing! Thin is cool, but personally, I prefer a meatier watch. I’d really like to see you expand the Polo S line; many new dial colors (such as forest green, bordeaux red, both patina’d and non-patina’d copper, bronze, etc.), various hand, indices, and dial printing materials (such as blue’d steel), yellow and red gold versions, etc. all while maintaining a very nice pricing point. I’d love to see a dive watch come next. 300M water resistance is just fine. And most definitely on a ceramic rotatable bezel! Lots of dial and bezel colors, a few hand/indices/printing variations, and in steel and gold versions. And when you’re ready to design a GMT/Travel watch then holler. As a professional traveler, I can help you create the ultimate travel companion!

Astonishing. My only criticism is the actual display seems to be secondary to all the engineering brilliance. Because the dial is so busy I'd like to see the face in a different colour so it's easier to actually read the time.

There are three versions, two with the black and metal theme here, and one with all metal finish but a blue dial. It is, I think you'd agree, the best looking of the three. Alas it will remain a grail watch.

I like quartz watches. The problem is the shoddy quality, like misaligned second hands being common. I'd love to have quartz watches if they were as immaculate in their construction as mechanical watches usually are. Something which beats faster than once per second would be cool.

Because they can. So the user can admire the engineering brilliance that went into it. You could ask why anyone would wear a watch at all - we've all got mobile phones with time displays. Watches are luxury goods and something exquisite and handmade is more pleasing to some of us. Few people need to-the-second accuracy anyway, +/- 15 seconds a day isn't likely to make a whole lot of difference.
