Okay. Ethan briefly describes that first TBP show. I’ll fill in some details. First, it was at The Knitting Factory in lower Manhattan, on a Sunday afternoon in early April of 2002. It must be mentioned, NYC was still in the process of recovering psychologically from 9/11. So, through a set of circumstances I ended up attending. It was I met someone who knew someone who knew Ethan and I was invited. I was living in Jersey and hadn’t been to Manhattan since 9/11. So anyway, it was a crummy rainy coldish mid spring afternoon, I get to Knitting Factory and am led to the very bottom of the venue. It was in a smallish dark kind of Rathskeller like beer stube. The floor was darkish cobble stone. There were maybe ten to fifteen tables around the room. I think we were the first to arrive. Okay. We sit at a table pretty much in front of where the band set up. There was no stage. Their set up was on the the floor. Okay. People begin to saunter in. A few here a few there. By the time the band took their places, it was by no means full. Not even close. Most of the tables were occupied. Some, like ours, only two people sat at. So, I’d say, being generous, there were forty people there. As they began, I was feeling underwhelmed. Then, as they played the first piece or two I didn’t know what the fuck to think. Momentarily, I thought it was some kind of a gag or a stripped down Mothers thing. It took about three song before I realized what was going on. They were taking music from all different genres, stripping it down blowing up the remnants then ingeniously putting it back together often with a crescendo or flourish I soon came to find enthralling. By the fourth or fifth song, I was absolutely hooked. And remained so till the bitter end. I still miss Christmas New Years week at TVV. And I’m still hoping that someone someday frees from captivity the Outdoors at Lincoln Center performance of On Sacred Ground.

I get the argument about luck but....when the concept that you are bringing to the market is revolutionary, it's going to succeed. The Bad Plus changed what a traditional piano trio could be. Kudos for changing musical history you guys!

7:58 oh boy, that reminded me the career of Sonny Sharrock, who passed away just before his "big break" to fame and recognition. Guys like Santana recognize him as a "revelation" at the time, but Sharrock didn't have that click for decades. Thanks _in part- to Bill Laswell urging him to try again in the "big leagues," we have things like the "Ask the Ages" album. He left too soon

I look forward to a Bad Plus reunion ... the three original members. Ethan can be propulsive in his playing. The current quartet lacks the sonic edge he brings.
