*Sphere* may not be the best-known quartet in jazz history, but to me it was (came of age listening to their half dozen albums) and is (still listening) one of the defining bands of the eighties. They were always in the here and now, yet offered so many beautiful echoes of the past, just like Monk's playing reflected his own influences so engrossingly. I know it's not going to happen, but Sphere deserved a Complete Recordings boxset Mosaic-style. Music of the highest order, and highly listenable.
