I've always believed that being great at something is not dependent on at what age you started or how "talented" you are, but it's all determined by how you practice and iron out your mistakes. Starting backwards so that you get more confident has been great advice for me! I had to start playing my arpeggios descending first because they were so sloppy, and now I make mistakes less often. Thank you for this advice!

Hi professor, thank you for the video. I‘m learning jazz in the third year and I am currently practicing the 7 most widely used jazz scales in all 12 keys, 2 weeks per key. My experience is that you are absolutely right in what you are saying. I‘m doing a lot of rhytmic practicing too, which helps a lot. The good thing about starting from another key than the tonic is that you‘ll get all the major modes like dorian, phrygian etc. up to locrian which are used very frequently in jazz. Thank you for your insights.

Taknk you, I applied playing scales down for my beginner students! For them its not only a great excercise, but also a brand new, exciting skill, and that's what I find very important - to make them feel like they can already play a lot, even if there are only simple, one octave scales, but playing from the top it's a brand new "piece". Great video as always Dr. Wang!! I just wanted to express how valuable that little nugget you dropped about being able to play any scale from any one of that particular scales notes!!! Rarely does a fast moving scale passage in piece start and end its the first and last note of said scale. If you can practice and learn to do this it will help you immensely in your playing, especially when it comes to the speed at which you're able to play a piece!!! I think of Schuberts beautiful Impromptu no.2 in E flat major and how the E flat major scale is all over that piece in the right hand and I feel like it literally starts and ends from every single note(Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb-C-D-Eb in case anyone doesn't know the scale!)in that scale!! I highly encourage anyone who isn't familiar with the piece to definitely check it out!!! Anyhow, again such a grrrrreat point Dr. Wang!!! I would definitely pay for your services sir if I didn't already have a great teacher myself!! Although, I suppose one could have 2 teachers if they so choose right?! Is something like that frowned upon or considered sort of taboo in the piano pedagogy world?! Thanks again Dr. Wang!!! n

Thank you for the video. I appreciate hearing about all three dimensions of evenness. What is your opinion about practicing scales with dotted rhythms, for instance playing once with long/short groups of two, and then again with short/long. Then, groups of three, played first as long/short/short, then short/long/short, then short/short/long. Then, groups of four, played four ways with the long note as the first, second, third, or fourth note in each group. My first teacher taught this way, but others did not like it.

@@ShijunWangPianoChannel That makes sense. Why then practice scales as the claim is that Barenboim and Agerich said they never practiced scales or exercises. Playing a scale musically is what matters not just speed and they are useful to a point. But why not practice real music. Scales are not music but the structures that music is built upon.
