Watching you, as a piano teacher, break down a Ren piano piece when he is self taught, and pouring on the accolades to boot just warms my heart. I found myself nodding my head in agreement when you pointed out a particularly interesting or skillful passage and I can’t play a note, lol. Thank you I totally enjoyed my time spent with you and can’t wait for more.

As a pianist myself, not near your caliber, I appreciated when his chord structure was very nontraditional and the face you’d make, I’d catch my self making. I LOVE listening to non-classically trained pianists bc they have no rules and make beautiful chord structure/cadences. Sometimes I’m envious of that! REN blows my mind on so many levels and I really appreciated your breakdown… super talented! Thank you!!

Ren being self-taught is wild to me - I'm guessing for some folk if the music needs to come out, it bloody well finds a way regardless. Great video again from yourself Robbie. This will, for sure, have some Renegades dusting off old keyboards & giving things a go themselves. Love it! :)

Such a beautiful tribute to his friend, and you've really helped me understand the technical construction of the composition in a way that usually eludes me because I am as musical as cheese.

Not to be a jerk but ABOUT DANG TIME Robbie! Just Kidding. Please read the description. It's powerful. He had no words to express his grief and created this masterpiece for Callum. This hits so hard. I fell in love with this the first time I heard it and had to run into the house to see the video.

Any time I hear Ren's piece I am reminded of Hans Zimmer's Interstellar. I have no music theory and no ear-training, so it was only after you outlined Ren's chords that I could check and see that while the chord progressions are different, at least my sense of familiarity does make some sense.

Commenting before I even watch lol. I am so excited to watch this. I have been dying to see you react to this since your Hi Ren reaction.
@rebeccaburnell931922 сағат бұрын
33:23 - awww, my breath caught in my throat, you reacted to what I think of as the most magical moment of the song (this one isn't a favourite of mine but I've played piano for 45 years so some of the compositional choices in any song I listen to jump out quickly). Going from the main "sweet" version of the theme to a variation with the open fourths in the right hand is a choice that delights me, given Ren being a person who didn't study formally & whose output is rock/pop/folk/rap tradition. We see here and there (and especially in the musical interludes in Jenny/Screech/Violet) that he can compose bits of music for a solo acoustic guitar that stand on their own in that context without vocals, but a full piece dedicated to solo piano is a different endeavour to flesh out than those other beautiful musical ideas stitched into some of his songs. More than any other part of this song, the variation in fourths makes me feel comfortable with his decision to go ahead with adding THIS song to his official catalogue (vs something he enjoys playing around with in his life outside of performance). It might not be Chopin or anything, but it's legit and I'm glad he showed us what he can do in this genre. (another "surprising for a guy who writes incredible rock/pop/folk/rap stuff" thing he's done, that's a substantial bit of writing rather than just a little snippit in a song, is the second part of Money Game 3) edit - hey Robbie, I can't find the video of you playing your own version - is it not up yet? The text on the screen made me think that it is but I don't see it in your list of videos.

I’m not finished watching… But I am so thankful you’re doing this. This piece is beautiful. It’s heartfelt and I feel like it tells a story. The best part is I played this song for my 92-year-old mother who has dementia but has listened to Classical Music her entire life, and she immediately connected with this piece. I ended up having to play it for her three or four more times because she was enjoying it so much. I play the violin, but I have always wanted to learn how to play piano. I know the notes, I can plink around on it, but sadly, I don’t have coordination to play anything complicated with two hands. And certainly not reading music for multiple clefs at the same time.❤ I appreciate all your effort in breaking this down. I’m gonna keep watching.❤❤

oh wow, that's really beautiful, about sharing it with your mom. Which I mean in both ways - you shared it ie you brought it to her, but also it's now a moment of connection that you share, amidst the ravages of dementia.

This would be an interesting back-to-back reaction vid for me (but it wouldn't do numbers for your channel, so don't bother!) The band is Jinjer, the song is Pisces, the live(-ish. The label were a tad naughty & had an engineer overlay some of the album track over it) capture is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYKxpXqlgph5jLc It's not their best work- they do some beautifully intricate thru-composed stuff these days, but it's one of the wildest soft/LOUD pieces in existence! LOL Second half of your reaction vid would then be to John Wilson's piano adaptation of Jinjer's Pisces (he also thoroughly enjoys Jinjer after we got him to upload some reaction vids to them, but he's a professional musician who's capable of impressive stuff like this!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/boakZoWtaa-jm6c As I said, this probably wouldn't do good numbers for your channel.... but I cannot see a world where you would not enjoy those 12 minutes, so maybe give these 2 links a go & just humour me with a quick response under this comment to let me know what you thought?! ;)
