It’s interesting to see what the beginner piano material looks like in the US. In the UK and Ireland piano teaching is usually based on the ABRSM/City and Guilds/RIAM grades treadmill (think strip-mall karate belts).

We have some of that available here in the States as well, although it doesn't quite govern piano lesson culture the way it does in other places. But isn't it true that those programs generally provide repertoire suggestions and collections, but aren't in and of themselves methods for learning? I would think Alfred and Faber and other popular methods are popular in the UK/Ireland/Canada as well as in the U.S.? Maybe I'm wrong on that? I used to use Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada) materials and exams to organize my piano lessons. I think they're similar or related to or based on ABRSM. RCM does have some great repertoire collections. But the musicianship components are not based on how students actually learn music. It's teaching to the test. Students may or may not learn the rep, but that particular goal doesn't help students think music for themselves. It prevents that. Many students fail, who would otherwise have had much to say with music. Thanks for your comment!

Interesting. But the idea that that should be a priority for a beginner, rather than developing an efficient technique that would make that mostly unnecessary, is ridiculous!

I wash my hands before playing because it helps my fingers on the keyboard and I think it keeps grime off of my ivory keys.

Nothing wrong with hygiene but I don't think that's what Alfred was going for. Keeping fingers on the keyboard could be a balance issue.
