I am amazed by how much of this kind of stuff I was never told, or didn’t absorb. I do remember one teacher squashing me against the wall as he leaned into the bass notes. I just didn’t know why he did.

This sound advice immediately made me think of how much leaning I do to play Chopin first etude ( C major) with arpeggios that span the entire keyboard 🎹
@nomadfc4342
@nomadfc4342 2 жыл бұрын
Barry Harris used to say that you should go along with the music, like, you don't do a chord arpeggio run by staying firm but by moving yourself with it.

I’ve heard similar advice but for forearm movement. Forgot the educator’s name but they gave an exercise where you play an ascending scale in increments so that you adjust your forearm position each time in accordance with the notes as you ascend a little more with each rep.

yeah we do this in front ensemble and it helps because marimbas are like twice the length of a piano so you already have to be mobile
@josezuniga3747

Not a pianist but did play marimba a lot, a five octave spans maybe 8 feet long, and so when playing you have to side around to get where you need to be, or sometimes have to spread your arms out and lean into the instrument to reach high and low registers at once, fun stuff

Literally was thinking about this just yesterday. I had a passage where the notes were very far up the register, and I noticed I'm very still in my position, which led to my arm being too stretched out thus messing up my hand positions and leading to missing notes.

Good issue to consider/revisit. Watching the pros is more conducive to the learning the best technique, more so than words which can become confusing. Leaning gets more foundation and good posture behind keyboard engagement. When both hands are engaged in similar registers it is easy and makes sense. Smaller mid regions still calls for some lean to get best position for forearm movement, hands square to the keyboard AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE for the exact reasons you mention. Not possible when in extreme, contrary motion; hands are far apart, then I lean in and still keep the forearms perpendicular to the keys AMAP. Thanks for the reminder. All these elements bear repeating many times; the high level pros revisit all these considerations constantly. All the elements of your technique are consistent, always based in ergonomics and economics of energy. Like this lesson, better lean position gets more power and foundation where it's applied to the keys. Love your stuff! Dave M

While it makes sense from an ergonomic perspective, I feel that many pianists lean naturally into the piano/keyboard when they play music with passion and expression. So it’s subconscious to a certain extent.
