I'm sure you probably know Kreisler and Rachmaninoff were friends and they made recordings together He was also friends with Milstein who was the first russian violinst to really master the solo Bach - I think Milstein's passion playing Bach is what caused Rachmaninoff to want to transcribe Bach music for solo violin / Milstein was actually Ukranian not Russian
