This Piano Hasn’t Been Tuned Since 1960

The first piano tuner we had in 1974 was an elderly gentleman in his 80's. He would regale us with ragtime and Tin Pan Alley tunes when the piano was ready and the whole family would gather 'round to listen. I know that feeling of enjoying the good music afterwards! I liked it more without the shell, I wish you could use a piano without the beauty box covering it. But the amount of cleaning you would have to do to that weekly makes sense on why it has the box. Piano internals are so beautiful though. And the way they move is just 😩

It's so handy having modern tech to help tune things, in the 60's they probably used tuning forks and their ears. I can tune a guitar by ear but it will be slightly lower than standard tuning

On Reddit forums I kept hearing about old pianos being worthless, but every time I see videos like this it only proves there's nothing wrong with an old piano as long as the soundboard and keys are in good condition. Although, it is a spinet (phooey).

I don't remember why we had a piano to sit in our patio room But we also were neighbors with a piano teacher And i guess this explains why we couldn't get lessons; because our piano was likely not tuned. Come to think of it since my parents got divorced i have no idea where that piano went...

That piano looks like an early 1960’s Wurlitzer spinet. I have that same piano or at least a model that looks exactly like it. I watched some videos on how to tune, bought a tuning kit, and tuned it myself. It came out good and I was grateful I didn’t break any strings. Question, I’ve always heard that you should always tune up to pitch (rotate your tuning hammer clockwise until you reach pitch). I’ve always tuned up to pitch when tuning my guitars. I see some piano tuners tune down to pitch at times by rotating counterclockwise. If anyone knows does it make a difference?

sometimes even tapping the pin with a hammer doesn't help. Then you need to unscrew the pin, moisten the hole with PINTITE, insert a thin strip of beech veneer and screw in the pin right away.👍

I have a old paino at my house, it's a antique and its 100 (I think) years old. The last time it was tuned was in the early 2000s (tho I don't remember, I was too young to remember) The mid notes are slightly out of tune, but once you get to the high and low notes, lord have mercy that sh*t is flat/sharp.

How bad is it for the pin block to hit the pins in deeper and is this something you would recommend doing on a piano that will be restored with it's original pinblock but bigger pins or just a way to get by until it's time to replace the whole pin block or if the piano isn't worth repairing? I have a piano from the 1800s that sounds nothing like a modern piano but it won't hold a tune very well but I'm not going to do anything stupid like put super glue in the pins like most people recommend since it's a very special instrument.

How about checking the soundboard? Did it have cracks? Wouldn't changing the pins from 7 mm to 7.2 mm be better? Also, did you do a fine tuning after several days?

appreciate your work, but do you really tune pianos with an ipad app? skilled piano tuners (at least over here) can tune by ear, which actually makes the piano sound more in tune, as you have a little freedom for what pitch a note should get, though they still base their tunings on the well tempered tuning of course

I have a Werlitzer from the 60s, got it at some sort of garage sale 13 years ago when I was 3, the lady seen me playing on it and told my Grandma that we could have it for free. 3 of the black keys don’t work and when you get down to the real low notes the out of tuneness is so bad that two of the white keys sound exactly the same. Might you be interested in possibly tuning it and if possible fixing the three black keys?
