His clarity and simplicity - and great spirits in everthing he played. Yes - spirited and unadorned must be the right words. Thank you for upload.

Who said he’s a pianist suited for the adagios alone? Such ease and aplomb in that hideously difficult finale! And the rest is equally magical.

So beautiful and “simple” - the most difficult effect to achieve.

With Schnabel, I always feel that I am hearing the music purely, simply and unadorned. Nevertheless, the tone and phrasing are lovely, and the finale really sparkles!.

His rubato is plenty (that is, by today's standards), but nevertheless tasteful, which gives room for the music to flow naturally, to breathe, to be alive. It's structurally coherent, but never rigid. There's like a big shape, which consists of smaller shapes, and those smaller shapes contain even smaller shapes etc. I don't know if I'm making sense or not, but that's just how I feel about his imaginative playing! Thanks for uploading this gem, pianopera!

Absolutely makes sense...Mozart was adamant about his music and the way other pianist played his music...he had said that his music needs tempo rubato...and that so many people played his music without it...Schnabel is actually my teaching line...

I love his rhythm! Bracing tempi in the outer movements, plenty of spirit, but also the elegance and grace are there. There's a feeling of spontaneity that I don't think you would hear in the mostly clinical-sounding recordings of today. Whenever I remember Schnabel and Mozart I always think of that famous remark of his that Mozart is "too easy for children and too difficult for adults"…and his criticism of another pianist's rather dryly played Mozart - "That's not Mozart, that's no-zart!" I especially treasure his recording of the Rondo in A minor, K. 511. I can't think of any artists today who play Mozart with such flexibility yet discipline, though I think the Austrian Rudolf Buchbinder comes close. Show less REPLY

I also treasure Schnabel's recording of the A minor Rondo -- so much more ... meaningful! than the other recordings I've heard. Thanks for posting that comment!

Schnabel playing Mozart as Beethoven or Brahms, Mahler and Bruckner, Wagner, never existed. Miraculous.
