In this video, I'm going to show you an easy trick you can use to add passing chords to your progressions.
This is a simple device but can be very powerful if used tastefully and creatively.
The idea is to approach the target chords chromatically, whether that be a half-step above, or below. You can even push it to several half-steps away. You want to try and land on the target chord on the beat, and use the chromaticism to build tension.
If you have any questions, just drop a comment below.

I am in love with your channel. I was feeling stuck with my knowledge and, because I learned alone watching videos and practicing, it was hard to me to know the next step. With your videos I get that feeling of motivation to keep learning new things again and I have fun while I am practicing. I feel a lot of improvement when I can transpone the new techniques that I learn here to the music I play. I will practice today this and I will keep watching your videos because they are gold. Thank you so much for put your knowledge here and sorry for my english, I keep practicing that too. I hope you are okay and wish the best for you

Cool sound, indeed! Fun fact: Half step above is the tritone, so it's basically 5-1. Full step, then half step, then root is 2-5-1 with the 5 being a tritone sub!
@zachr9544
@zachr9544 2 жыл бұрын
I almost get this.. but not quite. Can you explain a bit more? Sorry!
@suga4all
@suga4all 2 жыл бұрын
@@zachr9544 Sure, let's put it in context to a C major 2-5-1, which would be Dm, G7 and C. Now, the tritone of G is C#. So, if we substitute the G7 with a C#7 we get Dm, C#7, C. You see, going down in halfsteps from D to C really is a "tritone substituted" 2-5-1.

So basically a minor chord a half step above your target? Or a major chord if that’s what the target chord is for example? I hope I’m understanding that correctly. Sounds great though!
@PRIMEGospel

I would just call it a half step above or below the targeted chord. *Just to keep from getting confused.*

I'm sorry. What's a "passing chord"? Is it just a quick chord you play before the real chord you're going to play?
@fauxliage
@fauxliage 2 жыл бұрын
It can be several things so please bare with me lol A lot of the times the simple choice is the V of your target chord, so if you want to land on C Maj7 for example, you lead into it with a G7. Simple enough. Or You can also use 7th chords a half step above or below the target as well, so in this case, a Db/C#7 or a B7 would work as well. It could also the same chord a half step below, a B Maj7. A half step above, a Db/C# Maj7. You can use diminished chords to lead into chords as well, in context of the C Maj 7 chord it would be a B Half Diminished 7. A B diminished 7 however would lead into a C Min 7 smoother than it would into the C major. There are Suspended chords too, however, I’m not as keen on using those, and there’s also just going chromatic and using ANY chord you please if you’re not trying to adhere to theory too much. I know that was a lot but I taught myself a lot of this stuff, these videos helped a LOT as well, so I thought I’d share the knowledge I have currently I hope that helps and wasn’t too confusing. I apologize if it was💀
