I have a PhD in frustration trying to learn digital keyboards. Thank you for giving us permission just to play around and turn knobs…

Thank you Pianote for this amazing and informative segment featuring Justin Stanton! I really didn't understand the workings of synthesizers (the wheels, knobs, sliders, etc...). After watching this video, I now have an understanding and appreciation of these keyboards. Much love from NY! ❤

I'm here for the knobs, I'm all about the knobs. I'm working on my masters in Knob Turniology. I also enjoy wheels, faders, switches and buttons. Keys are just ok.

I've said before and I'll say it again - Justin is Snarky's (not so) secret weapon. You need to check out his solo album "Secret Place", you will not be disappointed!

0:20 "it can be really intimidating to see all the knobs..." No mr Stanton, what really intimidates me is the ZILLION dollars those things cost.

i love these synths but you gotta know the piano to play these right?
@Mattseak5 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Of course they have the same physical layout of keys, so in that sense you need to know how to play a piano/keyboard instrument, but there's nothing stopping anyone from starting with a synth keyboard either. Depends only on what you are looking for in terms of sound and what type of music you like to play.

Step 1 to learning how to play a piano (or keyboard instrument) is to get a piano (or keyboard instrument) that you can play so you can learn and practice. In this case, the egg most certainly comes before the chicken. 😁

The world of MIDI options is also available - different controllers from pads to flutes to keys to whatever. But also sequencers that you can use to convert your ideas into music without needing keyboard skills.

I think it’s best to think of synths as their own “thing” compared to piano. Other than sharing a keyboard layout, they’re wildly different instruments. That said, they DO share a keyboard layout, so of course piano skills will help. But you can definitely learn to play a synth before piano. For some cases, they may be easier to learn (for example, if you only want to play leads or basses on a monophonic synth, you don’t need a lot of the two-hands skills you need for a piano). To play either a piano or a synth, you’ll have to learn your way around the keyboard. But beyond that, they’re different things and I would not say one skill is required for the other. 😁

He’s a little bit wrong in his definitions. Digital does not mean it uses samples. It can use samples but it can use waves or wave tables, or fm, or whatever kind of oscillator.

The main problem with Electronics for me is they all sound the same and artists lose their identity. Very few electronic proponents sound unique. Klaus Schulze strikes me a about the only one who can be identified without being told beforehand.
@giovannimartinetto60015 ай бұрын
I do not agree with you... ill try to explain my point of even though i have some problem with english (im terrible at it sorry) you can tell the difference between the majority of electronic musician in two main ways: first, the compositional style or the playng style. You will ear the difference between a solo from chick corea and one of herbie hancock, for example... second is the sound itself: if you listen to ymo, kraftwerk and gary numan (i choose this artists because are more or less contemporary) you can clearly hear differences. It is, i think, a question of experience: the same way a young man cannot hear the differences between rock bands (for him they sound all the same) a non trained hear can not hear differences between electronic artists. If you think about it, classical musician composed music for centuries for piano, that you can think as a mono timbric intrument. But you will ear the differences between liszt, chopin, debussy etc. The suggestion is to listen to a wide variety of electronic music to hear whats unique about each artists, but uts a matter pf time
