I am a member of Piano with Jonny too and I am learning this song over there . Great place to learn piano. Infact I have quit several online websites in favor of theirs. The downloadable backing beats and smart sheet music make practicing so much fun. Worth every penny. And instructional videos like these can not be beat. Cheers

Really nice job on the lesson, Yannick. Clear, concise explanations with the perfect amount of info without being overwhelming. Positive reinforcement and encouragement. Seriously, I’m really impressed and trust me, when it comes to music/music theory, it takes ALOT to impress me. Great job.

You're a very clear explainer -- not only of what you did (adding extra notes), but also WHY, according to theory! Excellent demonstration.

Great lesson! I just joined @PianoWithJonny a couple weeks ago and I'm so glad that I did! Your lessons are the best! I still need to learn a lot more music theory, but I appreciate your sharing so much insight about shading and nuance with the chords. I have a lot of songs I am working on at the moment, but I have started working up some Christmas carols, so I will be coming back to this one again soon.

Very clear and useful as usual. I have to admit that I had ten years ago a very good teacher of harmony at University in Nice, it was very difficult at the time because I had no idea about harmony, but now I am so happy about the work I did. Next step now it is to put into practice that knowledge, which is esier to say than to do. Thanks anyway, amazing teaching

It sounds great. I feel the most important aspect of your lesson is showing the rest of us the method of turning any song into a much richer tune by using all those seventh, diminished or whatever other more complex chords. I doubt I will ever be able to use this method to jazzify some of my favorite simple songs. Nevertheless, it's a real pleasure listening to your performance and teaching efforts. Thanks a lot. Best wishes.

Hi there, your channel is awesome, guys. But a quick tip just to make it more efficient and helpful for beginners is that you should colour the right hand notes in green and the left hand notes in red. Thanks guys!

LOVE THE TUTORIAL, Didn’t quite get how you spelled out the Dm7 chord. Would you mind a slow explanation as I am a bit of a neophyte. Thanx a lot!!! John
@PianoWithJonny2 жыл бұрын
Thank you John! We are adding an "extension" or additional note above the Dm7 chord to make it DFACE. The E is what we call the 9th. It works nicely because the E is the melody.

@Thrated3 жыл бұрын
What a great lesson! I've got a question - in 6:49 why do we resolve the suspended chord to A major (which is not in the key of C) instead of A minor (which is in the key of C)? Of course it sounds beautiful and it's great to play, but I'd have no idea that I could have used A major here. I've tried replacing A major with A minor and it sounds... well... as if it didn't fit there. I'd like to understand the theory behind it - why does A major work, whereas A minor doesn't? Is there a music theory concept behind it that I could read more about?
@Thrated3 жыл бұрын
Ok I think I got it - A major could fit in there because its major 3rd (C#) is just a half step from the next chord that we're about to play (D). You've actually mentioned secondary dominants in the video, I somehow managed to skip it... This lesson is full of music theory concepts just on the right level of detail, exactly what I need. Thank you so much!
@PianoWithJonny3 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right! Secondary dominants create some extra pull to the next chord. In this case the A7 leads to the Dm7, so we’d call it a V of ii.
