"Modify" indicates that you've already installed another version of MPLAB. Uninstall that & again proceed with the new installation.

Microchip website says HITECH C compiler is replaced by XC8 PRO. What are the differences between the two compilers? Are there any resources to find out this information?

Instead of option complete it has "modify" and when I pick that it wont let me install it

you can use XC8 compiler. it's the new compiler for al the 8-bits PIC C, PIC12, Pic14, pic16 and Pic18series. and it can replace HI-tech compiler link: www.microchip.com/mymicrochip/NotificationDetails.aspx?pcn=JPNG-10XWYV663&opennew=n&print=1
