I’ve been really digging into your content deeply trying to figure out what types of educational videos to focus on most so first I’d like to say thank you for all your hard work and sharing your wisdom and experience! My question is when choosing a color from within the photograph most animals have a soft or shuttle tan or brownish color under their fur in many places. I’m curious about your experience with choosing this as a background color. I know you say to choose a color from within that is influencing the photograph but I wonder if using this color causes the main subject to be more washed out or to loose some of its punch? I noticed you didn’t choose this option for the video so I’m just curious if you would suggest to lean into it or maybe lean more away from it and why or why not. Thanks again!

@@TinyFitz hi the skin colour is not relevant unless you can see it through the fur openings - ie a polar bear has black skin, but i dont underlayer in black as i never see it under the fur

Thanks Jason! I’ve always wondered how to pick the perfect backgrounds. Tip for others, don’t forget you can reduce the saturation of colors (another Photoshop or digital art tool) to bring them to a more muted hue; its not as complimentary as your technique but does help if you want something specific.

With your help, my animal pastelwork has come on by leaps and bounds, but I always agonise over background colour, knowing how important it is to consider reflected light on the subject. This is just what I need - all That remains is for me to master my photo editing programme. I never saw the need before, but this has made me realise how it takes out the chance element which can lead to spoiling the whole painting. Thanks again, Jason - I will use the time I can’t access my studio to persevere with photo editing techniques.

Jason I have a question How do you decide what colors to use underneath layers to build on? I did a free workshop where the artist started with a light brown of sorts and then Payne grey and then built up with white and ivory and light gray on a shadowed part of white fur. But how she got to light brown to that I don’t know how she chose which colors to do. How does this trick help with that?

This video didn’t really explain what color paper to use at all. Keep it simple, and just say, “use a green paper or use a blue paper” etc instead of going into a too in-depth video about the computer program. This video could’ve been 1 min 30 sec. Just keep it simple.
