Red is the highlight colour for red. Start with a darker red base then use a normal bright red to highlight with and it'll look like red instead of worrying about skewing the results either orange or pink.

Yeah the thing a lot of even high level painters don't realize is that there is no light red.

Haha I’m newish to painting but even I said the same thing. Treat it like the red on his Templar shoulders. Use dark red up to maybe just a tad bit of blended red orange at the highest point. The brown red is a great tip for underneath.

I got the Warhammer starter set and i have decided to paint them as hive fleet kraken. I use the Vallejo game colour paints so i used dead flesh mixed with corax white for the skin and the carapace was 50/50 gory red and abaddon black

I painted my first Behemoth ‘Nids the other day, I used Doomfire Magenta and Magmadroth Flame. Just for a blend from orange down to pink along the body. Meanwhile the carapace was Stormfiend and Baharoth Blue, I then went over with Nuln Oil for shadows. I have over a year of miniature painting, and still consider myself a beginner; but I think they turned out great.

When I'm painting red I start with a maroon and highlight up to blood red but more highlighting than normal. It's almost a reverse of painting red then darkening it subtly. Seems to work pretty well. Then you can just keep blending further towards brighter reds until you're happy rather than start with the colour you want and lose control with the highlights. Hope that helps 👍
@Peregrintoook

Jay.... Try this, airbrush a real dark blue all over base coat, zenithal with white, lightly coat all over with a mid yellow then hit it with an allover coat of red. Makes a moody AND poppy armour colour for blood angels, mighty just be just the red your looking for.... 👋

i wsa happy, that i found a really easy recipe for my nids. i first went with a black primer. i grabbed a homemade mix thats something like a blueish grey and drybrushed all his body parts. i used a mix of contrast and regular black paint to correct the parts where the drybrush touched his scales. i used a violet contrast on the bottom of his feet. i added a drop of medium and put it all over his body parts just to wipe the top parts off with my finger. drybrushed some red details on the scales. filled every vent and hole with a flesh ink and stained it with reflexive orange. im really happy with the fact that i painted the leviathan box in 3 days. i kinda did an underspray with red so it was not all black on the bottom ^^

i second primalace here, as someone who's two armies are farsight enclave tau and dark angels, red is highlighted with red, y'know base with mephiston or khorne depending on how deep you want it, then with each highlight you move up a shade, though i do like using fire dragon bright as final edge highlights on guns and armour plates and stuff.
@03dashk64

Red is the highlight for red! You either start with a deeper red and use base red to highlight, or highlight with a pink then glaze red over it to trick your eye into seeing a lighter red

Ive found with the army painter speed paints reds, you dont want to put over a pure white. Ive been doing my hive fleet kraken all speedpaint and i spray it off white, then apply nuln oil to the carapace and then drybrush the whole model with pure white before applying slaughter red to the carapace and it comes out amazing.

This is exactly the stage I am at with my army. I just can't seem to nail down the final adjustments. Especially as it Nids, there are a lot of models, and I don't want to have too many steps. I suppose it is better to sort it out now rather than midway through an army.

I actually painted all my tyranids randomly because I feel like they reflect the hordes of matter that created them. I have themes within unit types like my lictors and variants are all the same general scheme painted to match their environment. But the swarm minis are all random speed paints in groups of 5. The big models I painted each their own color scheme as well. By going this route I was more free to explore and thus I painted fast. But I was satisfied with the quality!

I would go with a black primer with a red zenithal. Then I would go deep crimson for the body blending into deep purple at the top near the carapace. Then I would go for a midnight blue carapace with that deep purple at the edges. I would paint the claws that blue black again with sand coloured tips. The internals of the mouth would be bone/sand teeth with deep purple mouth.

I've had more luck highlighting red with a desaturated lighter red. mixing in a pale blue or green would do the trick, or just add a little blue or green to the lightened red, but that's a bit harder to control

Maybe an orange base coat before the red speed paint will get a subtle orange highlight with more of a deep red in the shadows (no pinkness). I got into the hobby around 2nd edition so the orange highlights are just what my brain goes to. The carapace on gaunt 7 looks awesome. can't wait to see the full army :)
@xcomeruinx

hey mate, every one of your paint jobs would have been enhanced with Vallejos Transparent red, thinned with water and used as a glaze it tones any pink or orange highlights back to a more saturated red tone, in fact it is a great way to blend all the highlights you do together allowing you to try flesh tones and light browns or pinks to do your initial highlights, then glaze with the trans red and bam, toned perfectly.

I started warhammer last year, and i chose the tyranids, me being me i made my own color scheme, wich i have now given a name, hive fleet tyrannus, grey body, brown carapace with red highlights, soft tissues are skin colored, eyes and wing memebranes are red, the little holes they have i paint in a death guard green color, and i use that color where there might be some liquids

Super happy you guys finally did a scheme video on Jay's Tyranids! This Behemoth scheme is definitely my favorite, and it'll be my hive fleet when I get around to painting some Leviathan 'Nids. It looks like Jay modified the carapace in the 5-day challenge, though. I'll have to do some experimenting of my own to get a final result that looks similar to Jay's final scheme for the carapace, because I'm not a fan of the traditional way of painting it.

Hey Jay, I get your trouble with building contrast and highlights on red and to that, i might have a solution you could use. I learned thst by mixxing orange in red, it makes the red rather brighter so if you just start with a dark red and build up with each color, you are left with a red that won't either turn pink or orange (depending how much orange you mix in) at its brightest spot

I've been looking for a good color scheme for my nids. Not really a fan of behemoth, I have expiremented with Kraken and Leviathan but nothing I've tried works. I tried white with blue for the exoskeleton like thing, and I have learned that blue is too bright. I think next time I will mix it with a darker color and see how that turns out.

It still looks kinda weird cause you're trying to paint a colour that doesn't exist, there is no bright red, there is only pink. You gotta start at like a brownish red and work up to a normal red with a specular dot. The other thing is that shiny things tend to look darker as a whole because the bright parts is reserved just for the direct reflection of the light source, while the rest will have a softer lighting curve. Without the contrast between the highlight and extreme highlight it doesn't fully sell the glossy shiny effect, it just looks like a very washed out matte. Last issue is that you are starting at pure red and then shifting your hue towards orange, making it just look orange. If you start more towards a wine red and work up to a regular red you can get the same amount of hue shift while staying in the red zone.

get whatever you like the look of. Rules will wax and wane no matter the faction but you will enjoy painting your minis more if you think they look cool. You will learn the rules in time regardless. That being said picking chaos or imperial factions will give you more overlap between armies modelwise. Xeno factions stand on their own with GSC and Tyranids as a bit of an exception in the form of purestrain genestealers. If you like Tyranids or Space marines the middle tier starter set is considdered pretty good value.
