Picking A Toilet (*gasp*) For Your Van Conversion

Putting the walls up in the Promaster van conversion is taking FOR.EVER. In the meantime, better start ordering some of the interior details - like the toilet. Im sharing all the options I could find from shovel to full plumbing and why I chose what I did. At the end is the big reveal for the most magnificent up-cycled toilet you have ever seen!

Your hysterical. I would have picked the same option. I work in fine dinning and occasionally customers will ask me to work a private party in their homes, either bartending or serving. You instantly made me think of the one very obnoxious home I worked at that had 2 very large bathrooms next to each other marked Madem and Mademoiselle lol, because you know everyone should have a seperate bathroom for men and women in their private residence.

mirageseekr are used to working fine dining to! And I’ve done catering and some very fancy hotels and restaurants. Sometimes I think that when you have exposure to the other side in life it either makes you obsess about wanting to live like that or it makes you go in the opposite direction. Sounds like you and I are on the same wavelength in that regard. When I see things like the bathrooms you’re describing it reminds me some of the reasons why other countries can’t stand us!

@@CaseyRoman Lol, we have a class a motorcoach (older one). Our toilet needs a part and it's hard to find. We just went camping and used a five gallon bucket with a Lugable Loo plastic toilet lid. It fits right over a five gallon bucket and it's VERY COMFORTABLE!!😁 I bought a box of cat litter and put some in a bag and put the bag in the bucket. When we pee or poop we just take a cup and cover it up. Just like Zoey our cat 😂 I only paid $12 and some change. I got it in the camping dept. at Walmart.😊 Works for us!! Oh, we buy the cat litter with Febreeze and the clumping kind.😁

I’ve used the same brand of hassock toilet for years. First tent camping and then in a simple teardrop trailer. Paired with some Double Doodie bags and Poo Powder it makes an unbeatable system. I would choose this over a more expensive porta potty any day. With the lid on, it makes a passable seat for for taking a sponge bath. Good choice.

Got the same one "Le Shitter" but drilled two holes in the side and attached a small rope through them and knotted it off. It doesn't have decent handles and I tuck mine under a shelf, pulling it out was alittle hard to get a good grip on it. So alittle rope handle makes fast recovery time when the need arises.

It’s called “the Luggable Loo” and all it is is a 5gal bucket with a toilet seat, made to fit perfectly around the rim....complete with a top that closes down any odors. We had it and used it for more than 5 years with no regrets. No black water tanks or any of that s_ _t. You are really helping alot of us!

I like the logic behind the toilet choice. We rented an RV in Iceland which had the cassette style toilet (US seems to go the holding tank route which requires dealing with hoses and stuff). We just used it for that last pee of the night, just the campground real flush toilets for the "main events". It worked well. Dumped it once halfway through the trip but then when it came to dropping off the RV clean before our flight home, we had to scramble around to find a dumping station. I like the idea of tossing a bag of kitty litter and other stuff into a regular old dumpster.

if you have rosemary plants, you can shred off the leaves and mix them in sealed bucket with your sawdust. It will mask a lot of smells and keep flies/gnats away. We hang rosemary branches in barn to keep flies away from duck/chicken area. Smells better, too. I love your van. Looks like inside of a house, not a van. Keep up the great work!

I made a portable separating toilet for under $50. The solids are kept dry with pine (hamster) shavings and we go for weeks without a worry. I also exhaust odours 24-7 from the toilet to a sealed battery box to the outside using a computer fan.

Here's an idea. Don't know if it would work. Arm & Hammer makes a pet product for litter box descenting. It's basically a white powder you throw down in the litter box when you want it to smell nice but you're not ready to change the litter yet. It works really well in litter boxes. Might be something to keep in your bathroom. Comes in a tall skinny yellow box. Probably in the pet section of Walmart.

Casey I'm still at the Transit vs Promaster stage. Ground clearance is an issue as well as the rwd vs fwd for traction. No off road but dirt country roads and snow are all considerations. What do you think on these issues?

@@jameshudson1508 I'll be perfectly honest with you...for my use of the van I have very little chance of doing off roading and I fully intend to avoid all snow so I did not put a ton of thought into those issues. My impression always was that the biggest structural differences between the two were that the Transit is higher and the Promaster is wider/boxey-er. I really don't think you can go wrong. If it were me I'd put more comparison into whats going into it. I have a kitchen and office area and other features that really should not be bumping along down any rough terrain. Now other van builders use more steel to frame out their interior in anticipation of being off road. Perhaps consider your interior building materials and how well they will take rough rides and/or weather.

Strongly recommend separating liquids from solids as they occur. Something like a funnel and clear plastic tube to a quart sized bottle. And some vinegar and water in a spray bottle to keep things fresh. Keeps down the smells and easier to manage. Also, always double bag. For maximizing usable space, La Shitter is also a good place to store non-food items, or maybe that's a bridge too far. Thanks.

Best van build video! You don't even need to be building a van to get subscribers because you are so entertaining we would all watch anyway! Suggestion - look into getting a "Lady J" for quick #1 events only (camp outfitter stores online) and keep "La Shitter" for the "big stuff". I can't wait for the next video!

Love your style, so frank and sassy! Since we're on the subject I thought I'd share a tip I learned from Moms who camp. Use home made baby wipes. Since you're just throwing them away, no need to worry about contributing to sewer blockages, etc. Choose a paper towel roll, pick a thickness & size, considering what u want to have If u want a 1/2 sheet to wipe buy Full sheets, if u want squares, buy "pick your size' With a shark knife, cut it in half to make 2 shorter rolls Take 1 tbs each of witch hazel baby shampoo & baby oil, mixed with 1 cup water Drizzle this on the open ends of 1 of the roll 1/2's, use 1/2 of the liquid on each end Put it in a zip lock bag and use it when you get down to business You'll be just that much happier. I'd wager that you'll never go back to dry paper. Try it and see for yourself. All the best!

Your videos are hilarious so I subscribed. I'm looking into converting a promaster so it's nice to watch you doing it and it's a huge bonus that I got to laugh at the same time. Please keep on making videos, especially ones about your build out and vanlife. Edit: Oh and as someone who lives in France I also hate word decorations, especially French themed words. Americans (I'm also American) love to take normal French words and plaster them on the wall and act like it says something fancy when it infact does not, ahhh it drives me nuts. Its great to hear I'm not the only one who hates word decorations, especially the "beach" themed ones. I thought I was the only one who hated this trend.

Love your vids! Saw a lady who has this kind of toilet, she did a cool thing. She put a detergent bottle inside at the 'front' and used a funnel for peeing, swear to goodness! That way, she can take that and empty is easily, etc. I've done a lot of research on 'Humanure', and it's true that separating the liquid and solid goes a long way to cut down on odor. She swears by this plan, pees more than poops in a day, so the poop bag is twisted closed most of the time. Who thought any of us would ever think so much about this issue, we're so spoiled. I'm heading out next year, have a lot to accomplish before I can get on the road, thanks so much for making the prep process so much fun!!! Karen

I cracked up with the 'Design with Words' deal. I've owned a company, 25+ years, that builds custom homes, crap, I should have put that in the appropriate Caps, and I go in after move in and swear to god, seems like they label every room. Hi Casey, I think exactly the same way. I have a porta potty cube 345 from Thetford buuuuuut, I actually use it the same way you will do. I set a plastic bag on it, do "my business" on the bag and then I just through the bag to a bin somewhere, they are plenty everywhere so it is the easiest way for me too. That way you avoid the use of chemicals and as you say no need to transport it with you and have to empty that horrible thing every couple of days and the thing is that it still worst on summer days. I pee in a 2 litter special Tupperware which I empty everyday in a proper place, and that's it... ✌️

Yes sir! Someone grilled me for throwing waste in the garbage....I pointed out the sheer number of baby diapers that hit the trash can every day. And this is hardly an "every time" situation. Its not like you and I don't know how to find public restrooms!

Another great, personality filled Video. I have been doing research out the ass...So to speak...on what the best toilet for my rig would be. I have to say, I am leaning the same direction you went. however, keep this in mind, you will want to keep at least saw dust with you. It pulls the moisture out of your crap thus keeping it from smelling. Also, you will want a separate bottle for peeing in. If you pee in the bucket you crap in, the ammonia in your urine mixing with your turds in your bucket will smell like a sewage plant in your van. So...Pee in a dark bottle so you can empty it inconspicuously in a bathroom along your journeys and the bucket for crapping in with saw dust and you will be a happy camper. 😊

the very best way to do "research" hahah! My plan is to use kitty litter. Yes, kitty litter. It is designed to contain smells and simplify cleaning and will be easier to get a hold of just about anywhere. One of my girlfriends demanded I look for "low dust" versions only. I suppose no one really wants a dusty ass anyway....

hahaha awesome!!! Again I had exactly the same thoughts whilst planning. Nalgene bottle for pee and then a bag it up poop system. We rented a caravan in Spain last year and it came with one of those loos you dump out in a public rest room. Well it was...crap!!!! It did not have a set spot in the van so it stayed in the shower and as it has some water for flushing and some chemicals in it. it was a bit heavy to move every time to use. At the end of the week to empty it out was just awkward. The chemicals mean there is no smell but to lift it and dump it in the loo was difficult- splashes, and it had a bowl area that particles can get stuck to so much more of a hassel to clean than what you got. I will be taking a look at the link for what you got and hope in Europe it is just as cheap!

I'd be really interested to hear a follow up on this after a few months in the van. I'm getting the gist that if you mix 1 and 2, you got a smelly mess on yer hands. The advantage of compost, you can vent out the #2 smell until it dries (if you've mixed it with like cocunut shell or something) and #1 you just send to your grey (that has bleach whatevs) and dump grey whenevs and wherevs, same with dry #2 in a bag. I'm leaning toward a cassette that I can run grey water too for flushing. Single chamber to empty, but I will also vent with a fan. Feels like the best comprimise to me, I don't want big holding tanks underneath and pay RV fees to dump, and all options seem to have comprimise. But if your system works and you don't think it will smell, do let us know.
