Picking Classes/Creating a Schedule for Community College
Hello friends! Today I have brought you a video that goes hand in hand with my last video about IGETC and assist.org (link below). If you are a new California community college student this video will help you figure out where to start when it comes to perhaps the most crucial part of your college career, picking your classes. You may ask yourself where do I even begin? which classes should I take? or how do I know which classes I need to transfer? Well, your search ends here because I address all of these things in my video. Before you begin make sure you have a copy of the IGETC requirement sheet and your school's class schedule for the upcoming academic term. Both of these things should be available online or you can pick up a hard copy from your counselor. After getting these two things you can follow the steps I outline in the video that show you how to make an educational plan/class schedule on Excel or Google Docs. At the end I will give a few important tidbits that will help you as you choose your classes so make sure you watch that part as well! Once again this video is targeted towards California CC students who intend to transfer to UC.
Thanks for watching - please like, comment and subscribe! Leave your questions down below and let me know which classes you plan on taking next semester/quarter!

Organization & Scheduling for CC: How To Do a Road Map (for 2-3 years at CC): 1. If you want to transfer to a CSU (California State University - of which there are 23 different schools), then do the CSU - GE path. 2. If you want to transfer to a CSU and/or a UC (University of California - of which there are 9 different schools), then do the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum). 3. Check out you specific CC's graduation requirements on the CC's official website. 4. Pick a major and see and write down what classes you need to take to fulfill that major's requirements. 5. Use everything above and start with an Excel spreadsheet or a Table in a Word document and start planning out what semesters and what years you will take everything. 6. Also keep in mind, that some classes have pre-requisites or co-requisites. Pre-requisites means that you have to take that class first before you can qualify to take the second class (because the knowledge builds like building blocks. Co-requisites means that you have to take those two classes at the same time, concurrently (because the knowledge goes hand-in-hand). 7. Make sure the classes you pick or choose: transfer to either a CSU or UC (or both) just to be safe.

Hi Hailey! I just graduated high school & it's going to be my first year of community college soon. I really love how informative your videos are. How many units did you take your first year? I'm registered for 17 units, will be working a part-time job, want to participate in some clubs, & volunteer the day I don't have class. Do you think taking 17 units is too much of a workload or with the proper time management, it will be tolerable? A time management video would be super helpful too :)

Hey Jade! So funny, right before I saw this comment I actually just followed you back on IG. Congrats on graduating! It sounds like you have an exciting year ahead. My first fall semester I only took 9 units, but I took 8 units over the summer term so I didn't feel too bad about being a part time student. As far as your plan goes, it's hard to say. Are you on the semester or quarter system? I think every individual is capable of taking on different workloads and it certainly is doable. If you are confident in this level of responsibility then I would say go for it. I have pretty much been working and going to school full time since I was 16 years old and personally I could always handle it. It also depends on the types of classes you are taking. Since it is your first year you are probably taking entry level and intro courses so you will probably be fine. If you are taking multivariable calculus, anatomy or something of that nature I would probably advise against it. I plan on making a video with examples of my school, work and just life in general schedule in the future so keep an eye out for that. It's all about learning to balance things and being aware of your own limits. This comes to you naturally but I know that a lot of people, like yourself, and like myself when I first started CC, can benefit from following an example. So yes I would like to address this in a video in the near future. Thanks so much for checking out my channel and let me know if you have any further questions - I am always happy to answer, give advice or just let you pick my brain when it comes to school!

Hi Hailey, I was wondering if I’m signed up to take summer classes at your community college. Is it possible to work towards your associates degree while trying to work towards your bachelors degree at your major university? The community college does have a transient for credits to transfer. Thank you for the video!

Brian Curry yes, that is exactly the point of community college. Just make sure the class is transferable to a university

I think for degree-related classes it's not ideal to take P/NP. For something unrelated it's probably not as big of a deal. However, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a deal breaker.

@@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege so if I go to a community college first to do my basics and then transfer to a university they wouldn’t need my sat or act scores at all?

I know UC/CSU doesn't require SATs but I'm not sure about schools out of state. Ivy leagues and elite colleges like Georgetown require SAT/ACT. Just make sure to check application requirements for those colleges :D
