3 of the late pear varieties are Josephine de Malines, Winter Nelis and Comice. Birds love pears when they are almost ready, and so Dan has placed nets over his pear trees for this part of the season. By means of regular pruning, it has been possible to keep this Comice tree to a relatively small size with lots of spurs in the lower part of the trees, facilitating harvest. Even now, with the pears ready to pick, there are lots of short spurs with a terminal bud, that will become a fruit bud, surrounded by 3 or 4 leaves. This year the Comice pears are of a good size, and they come off easily by simply lifting the pear. Demonstration by Dan Neuteboom, camera by John Paddy. Read more at realenglishfruit.co.uk
