Picking open a public storage lock plug, using nothing but a zip tie

Nice tip. My wife lost the key to our unit and I didn't want to pay for the removal and replacement of the lock, so I just tried to rake it like a "regular" lock and it worked pretty quickly. I have had experience raking locks though, out of necessity, and on my own stuff. I used the "bent paperclip" method to make a rake and a tension tool with success. There are some pretty good KZbin videos on how to make them. Thanks for this idea though, I'm gonna try it out of curiosity. Peace.

All you need is a drill with a bit that will go through metal, start drilling right where you put you key in. Drill it out, and wallah.

I have a tenant with a lock picking kit who lost the key to his unit. He’s been out there for 2 hours trying to get into his unit. I suggested calling a locksmith but he was sure he could pick it. I guess he just needs a zip tie?

Takes, knowledge to pick... Normally takes practice.. On public storage locks I can pick them without a tension tool, because the locks are sloppy

This is he case with a lot of cheap locks. The lock has too much space in the area where the pins move up into when the key is inserted, so much so than they can be pushed up all the way leaving nothing to stop the lock from turning.

You said it didn't work. Public storage change their round lock to this. So I was hoping there is a way for this to be opened. I have deen special keys? No idea where to get. Someone said get a powerless drill and bore it out. So I'm stuck, any HELP IS APPRECIATED AND NEEDED !!! THANK YAL

So I was able to pick the lock about 5 times, using the zip tie.... It was just dumb luck that I opened it so fast on the video. These locks use stupid loose tolerances, which makes it so easy to pick. I've had several different Public Storage lock plugs for the shed, and all we're just as easy to pick. If I was going to try to pick them open I would use a real rake pick. The locks are so easy you don't need tension tool. , if you have no experience picking locks, I would just get a real pick and try to rake it open. Search KZbin for making my own lock picks, there are tons of videos. Good Luck

@@JohnGriner I have Public Storage and actually got zip ties today. I contacted a locksmith and this guy was making up prices, have him details and didn't know what I was talking about. Then hung up, to text me he's leaving the city but, be back next week. Dude tried to charge me $109-200 for a lock. I'll try out this information, thank you.

What? Did you have a stroke mid sentence?The lock plug was in my hand.. You have to unlock it then you pull the lock out of the door to open it.. the storage unit locks are pure junk, I used a pick to open it more often then to pull my keys out of the ignition to unlock the door.. The locks were made so sloppy I didn't even need it to use tension tool, just a pick plopped around a few times.
