I don't know if Sky covered this but Shoaib getting Sachin out for a golden duck at Eden Gardens is one moment etched in my memory. I saw that as a 10-year old devout fan of Sachin and was just left stunned. I think Tony Greig called it out too- about 100,000 people waited an entire day to watch their God bat and in came Shoaib and demolished his stumps. Special moment.

If Atherton would have had the opportunity to bat in an England side who were amongst the most successful sides of recent times, not only would he now be held in much, much higher regard, but the difference his contribution would make is incalculable.

Very true, he was unfortunate to open for a team full of under-achievers (w.r.t mental toughness) at a time when fast bowling had probably reached its peak in the 90s in terms of multiple Test playing nations having good to great bowlers, whatwith the inclusion of a strong South African bowling unit and with India and Sri Lanka producing their first generation of good seam bowlers. And with England typically playing many more Tests than the rest, he had to more than any other opener in the 90s bear the brunt of the best : Wasim-Waqar, Ambrose-Walsh, Donald-Pollock, McGrath-Warne(!), Srinath-Kumble(!), Vaas-Murali (!) and even Zim had a decent bowling attack (the brave Heath Streak remember?) And not to forget English conditions alongwith New Zealand (when they decide not to produce flat tracks...) provide the toughest challenge for Test Openers imho, things get easier for the middle order in the British Isles which is the opposite in the Indian Sub-continent.
@vikranthmelanathur6505

And finally I have an observation to make w.r.t. English Cricket which as in any sport in any nation thrives from the existing societal structure. From the outside I have seen English Sport broadly having a social divide between the highly articulate, intelligent, disciplined pvt. school - upper class players on one hand and the naturally talented, athletic and exuberant players from the middle and lower classes or the masses as we call them on the other. This divide is even more evident in English Cricket compared to the other sports. In my opinion English Cricket has always been strong when they have had a talismanic all-rounder who would bridge the gap between these two social sections - think Tony Greig, Botham, Flintoff and now Stokes, who would galvanise and drag along their teams with the sheer force of their will and personality and give them the edge to perform under pressure; alongwith a highly intelligent and articulate Captain - the likes of Illingworth, Brearley, Gooch, Atherton, Hussain, Vaughan, Cook. Unfortunately for Gooch, Atherton and Hussain they lacked that glue, talismanic Allrounder that the other English Captains had.

51:00 thinking of funny moments, I’d say Michael Vaughan losing his pants while diving trying to get to the ball in a Test match is a funny one. I think it was 2007 or 08. Another one, Sreesanth mistimed his dive near the third man or the fine leg boundary trying to save a four and he never quite managed to get anywhere near the ball and watched the ball go past the boundary while he stopped a good distance away from the rope while fluttering his arms like a restless bird. I think it was in an ODI in 2007.

@oysterman250
@oysterman250 4 жыл бұрын
When you bear in mind that Sky Sports (UK - as opposed to Australia, for example) tend to only televise England's Test matches and the global competitions: i.e. the various World Cups, the "England bias" is hardly surprising - and the stipulation for the nominations was only events that Sky had broadcast live or as highlights.. Sky Sports don't, as far as I'm aware, broadcast live for Test matches between, say WI and Pakistan. Similarly the participants - all Sky Sports commentators/pundits/presenters - won't have the opportunity, and possibly not the inclination to attend EVERY international cricket fixture between every set of playing countries and invariably are involved in England's fixtures/events that prevent them from doing so, in any case . I would imagine the same would apply for an Indian sports channel - their interest and focus will be on India's representative teams and athletes, not those of the broader global picture beyond India's immediate opponents. A similar vodcast in India would rightly revolve around India's Test and World Cup wins and some exceptional victories for India's opponents. Essentially, the suggestions put forward by the 4 guys are subjective - they are their own opinions, based on their experiences of the events and brought together to reach a concensus. You more than likely disagree - because YOUR country's victories and achievements outrank some, if not all, of those brought up in this video. A fair enough outlook, for your part, but you're applying YOUR values to a production that didn't actually involve you and your views.

Rob Key needs to get those jokes out more quickly. We all know where he’s going so at least don’t talk over everybody and totally trample over the conversation to get another ‘Nas is bad’ joke in.

It could be well argued that T20 has made both 50/50 and test match cricket more entertaining. Much faster run rates, more results, and better fielding. The disappointing thing is that this seems to be only reflected in test match audiences in England. As a cricket purist, player, coach and umpire, T20 has made coaching younger players marginally more difficult. Trying to get young players to concentrate on length and line, or learn even the basics of a proper defensive technique was never easy, but T20 certainly does not help. You can spot the difference between kids that primarily want to play the game, and those that are more cricket fans. Both of my sons are far more of the former. Both are very talented is all aspects and love playing, but have far less interest in watching cricket being played. Which is possibly why they both listen to their coaches more, don't try to hit everything for six, stay in front of their stumps, and generally bowl at them. Having said, that when my eldest bowls at me, virtually every ball is an extra fast bouncer, for some strange reason.
