Usually there are more wounded than dead, but not in this case. =) Military traditions are important! In the Russian army, generals have been "traveling for asterisks" for years. The general arrives at the front line for one day and sends soldiers to attack, and then receives a reward for his personal participation in capturing an enemy stronghold that no one needs. While conscripts served in the Russian army, it was almost always possible. However, currently there are contractors on the front line who have tremendous combat experience. Therefore, these generals get a "plywood star" instead of a "gold star".

At the end of this clip, when General Petraeus was explaining about what the Ukrainian's are doing to deplete the russian soldiers and generals with their modes of communication by-way of taking their cell phones, etc, that is huge. Saw a rundown from someone that explained how Putin wants his military dumb and cowed so it would never pose a threat to him. Too much initiative was placing a target on that soldier, since Putin got rid of any potential popular leader to rally around, like he has his political opponents. I believe Ukraine won't want to be in NATO after this. They will likely want to focus on increasing their military funding and training, better ammunition development and building of jets, anti-missile systems etc. The Ukrainian government, sadly, has only now seen what the West is and the fact that NATO was never planning to let them in so they will be smarter from here on out. They've been betrayed by Russia and America with the Budapest memorandum. So I won't even be surprised if they'd want to get their nuclear weapons back too.

The problem is that psychopaths are not held back by empathy. Most non-psychopaths reach hurdles in their life, for example when they don't want to lose a friend or just people close to them. In addition to that most get taught morals and that you should treat others fairly. In most cases those are just minor things, which already lead to a slowdown, but there are also major things which can't be done if a person has empathy. For example Putin came into power by staging a terror attack and waging a war based on that. Pretty much no non-psychopath would do that.

My understanding is that Ukraine has offered just what you suggest, lay down your arms, surrender and they will grant asylum and the equivalent of $10,000 US to reestablish their lives in Ukraine after the conflict. Great to hear from Petraeus. He approaches problems from a pragmatic point of view and is very gifted at breaking problems down into component parts while also keeping in mind the big picture. Really good analysis. The Russian generals being killed is very unusual. In modern war, a general can conduct war from many miles away from the frontlines, so it is very peculiar for them to make themselves vulnerable for a host of reasons. It destroys the chain of command, it renders units unresponsive, and it is not easy to just replace a general lost in battle, unlike standard soldiers. A general has spent their entire life familiarizing themselves with how war is conducted, what equipment they have available, knowing their limitations and needs, knowing the people under their command, etc. Losing a general isn't losing a soldier, it is losing decades of learning, experience, and morale for a unit. Five may not seem like much, but it is a crippling blow in reality.
