Picking Up Your Baby Boa

Here is a method I learned a couple years ago on how to pick up baby boas without getting bitten. Yes it can be done!

I always just get them out regularly so they're used to being handled. Except for at least 48 hours after feeding, of course. Then when I do get them out, I just take a long plastic spatula and let them smell it and nudge them a little. Just to let them know it's not feeding time. Then I just carefully pick them up. Always support them with two hands and don't make any sudden, jerky movements like the man said. I've never had a problem with red-tail Boa's. Great animals.

I have two baby boas. A BCI that is about 4 months and a Sunglow that is about 3 months. The BCI is very chill, I can just grab her in the middle with no problem. The sunglow is very timid and defensive. I am going to try this method with my Sunglow next time I have to take her out of her enclosure! Thank you for the video.

Yes hook training works really well. Once the babies are used to handling I will start hook training. It sure does come in handy when working with adults.

RevolutionBoas Hook training most of the time is not even needed. Especially with these. Hook training is great with baby carpet pythons though as they are more nervous than most snakes and one of the species I do not lead new keepers too. Hooks are only good for species like carpets or a adult snakes that is very defensive. In which case your not training anymore but trying not to get bitten.

Actually, baby boas do much better in small enclosures. In the wild, babies are not seen very often - they are hidden, they cram themselves into very tight crevices or under cover. They are not all crawling around getting exercise in the open. Predator avoidance, that is their instinct. Small cages make them feel more secure in that way. Really works. Once the baby snake is established, feeding well and growing a bit, a larger enclosure will be fine.

Mark Giacalone watch Snake bytes channel and see my point. Plus my youngest snake is approximately the same size, he has a glass terrarium and he seems pretty damn comfortable. I take my snakes out every day except a day or two after I fed them, because then they​ don't wanna be moved. Never bit me once, if they are uncomfortable they just say(by making their head larger or their typical sounds) it and I put them back but I don't have truble at all taking them out. The cage has to be tall as it's long and it needs thick branches and different areas where they can lay(some boas like to climb alot, especially hog island). I even have a tree in my living room only for them. I hate people that say that they love snakes and keep them like that, read where they came from and see what they need. I'm posting ,, hateful" comments only on channels that talk shit without knowing anything. I'll probably make a video about how people really have to treat pets.

What if your baby boa (mine is a red tail) doesn’t give you a chance to cover his head? Mine is instantly striking as soon as I open his drawer, he doesn’t like people, I’ve tried working with him but I don’t have a chance to grab him or anything before he strikes and bites me

I've had my boa for about 6 months now and she's about 10 months old, she's fine in the viv, but I put her in a separate box for feeding and every time I go to take her out, she becomes aggressive, obviously because she thinks there's more food. She tagged me once when I went to get her but I found your video and tried it today, since it's feeding day and I wanted to see how she'd act, and it worked perfectly! Thank you man!!

Some snakes start to associate being handled with feeding if you move them before you feed them. My friend had that same problem, and switched to feeding his snake in the enclosure and hasn't had problems since.

I’ve had my boa for a week now. Started picking her up after 3 or 4 days. what if your boa is hissing? as i picked mine up she started hissing but i continued to hold her as i thought once she knew i wasnt a threat would calm down but didnt so i put her back down in the enclosure...this is only my third time handling her...first time bit a dozen times but was relaxed for the most part, second time a day later was completely relaxed and bit me only twice as i kind of snuck up on her blind spots, fed her 3 days ago and tried to handle her today and thats where the hissing came in, now is just staring intently at me..of course ive had her less than a week but am confused as to why she would be chill one day and not the next? maybe i just disturbed her whilst she was sleeping? or food isnt completely settled?

You kinda have to when they are in tubs or Sterilites as babies, even my baby green anacondas are unphased by me coming from above. I think it's a bigger issue when the snake is not handled on a regular basis but all my babies are handled often.

Hogs only get 4-5 feet, so I'd say 3x2 ft minimum. But they'll love any extra space given as long as they feel secure :)

I got a red tail boa from a breeder who isn't around any more the boa is 2 feet 9 months old but it's just a hassle to feed I've tried live and frozen and he doesn't take then he takes pre killed but it's hard to get him to eat is like he lacks any instinct at all any suggestion?

It should never be an impulse buy. Boas live very long and are definitely a commitment.

I'd consider weighing the options of these two. If it's your first snake, it's advised not to get a boa(although I did not listen), but I think they both are good snakes if you are looking. Boa's live to be around 20-30 and sometimes 40, can weigh in at 7.8 lbs(Doesn't seem like a lot but when it's 100% muscle it is) , and get around 7-10 feet whether you get a female or not. Ball pythons live to be around 20-30 years as well, but only get 3-5 feet for females, and 2-4 feet for males, and weigh in usually at four or five pounds. It's honestly what you are up for.

Kenneth Reyes Do your research first, it's extremely important. When you know that you are fully ready and know what you can know without experiences, go for it. I think a ball python is the best beginner snakes, but do your research beforehand. They're really chill, but otherwise a corn snake would be good. They're smaller and a bit faster. But those are personally, in my opinion, the best beginner snakes.

You need to hold your boa more. Do not feed it in its enclosure. Just get a big plastic tub and have a schedule for feeding and if you hold her all the time they will bond with you and knw the difference

Feeding snakes inside their cage makes no difference in their attitude. Just wash your hands.. They have a Jacobson's organ for a reason. So they can pick up scent particles and take them to their brain

Yes it does make a huge difference, at this size of a snake it does not hurt if they bite and mistake your hand for food but when they are 6 ft. and you stick your hand in the enclosure to pick up it is going to hurt like hell and do damage so if you want to take a chance by all means go ahead. +Suzanne Tegroen my snake has no behavioral issues whatsoever, and I've tried both methods. Like you said, snakes are smart. They can smell what is food, and what is not. I accidentally touched the mouse once, and my snake hesitated to eat it. He sat there just sniffing it for a few minutes before eating it, because it has my scent on it. Snakes can tell the difference between hands and prey. It really doesn't make a difference.
