A good daily driver is ship big enough to be driven alone, like a freelancer,Cutlass,Spirit,Zeus. A medium ship with enough space for a ground vehicule, good firepower and shielding.

To dampen is not just "wet something", it also has the meaning of making something less strong similitar to "soften". Dampener is actually correct because it's reducing potency from the quantum drive. Damper also has that meaning though, so both work well.

"Damper" is not a term in British English as far as I am aware. "Dampen" has the meaning to constrain, and it is this sense that quantum dampener is used (not wetness.)

Language is fluid, but having said that it is important to be accurate so others get your message. I think dampen is a modifier and damper is an object.

My daily has been for a long time the Banu Defender. Very nice to fly, has an interior and a bed but is small. Perfect for some bounty or 890 hijacked missions and works great for box grabs.

Dampener is used to mean restraining/subduing effect. It's root is from dampen which is to dull or make weak which was originally from damp which originally meant dazed. It's a pretty interesting word etymology as at a later date others began using damp to mean wet and dampen to mean make wet . So now both are correct terms depending on context.

Colloquially, yes, they can mean similar things. But within engineering or technical applications, it's always damper. I may have picked a futile battle. Both words are so ingrained in society, it's hard to unravel.

@@OddJobEntertainment In my experience (control systems) it depends on the vendor and equipment. For example a damper actuator for a valve, hydraulic dampener for ESD on a valve or a pulsation dampener on a pressure vessel. It's for sure a futile battle at this point as our current day real life equipment isn't even consistent, that talking about it for a theoretical sci-fi tech makes no sense now. It just comes down to what you see in real life examples that will colour your preference.

I've been running the Freelancer max, and I was pretty much immediately sold on the CL as an aesthetic replacement. My criteria is a decent amount of cargo, enough guns to run away, and the ability to fit an Ursa. The Ursa has been super useful for ground missions and looting stuff. And hey, thanks for the monstertech reminder, I'm picking up a joystick and mount soon. No idea how to include dampener, but I'm gonna be buying this stuff anyway, so I don't know why I bother.

Great vid McCool. I agree, I also use my starter all the time despite having larger ships. Just love the cutter too much plus sometimes you’re stuck somewhere and just need a ship with a fast claim time. Edit: Loved your point about the damper, would love to see that corrected in game.

IRL, my daily driver was always a station wagon. My favourite was my 1980 Olds Cutlas Cruiser, gold with the faux woodgrain sides. I hit a concrete highway divider with it doing 65 as the only way to avoid an accident when a little dodge coupe cut me off then hit the brakes. I gouged a good bit of cement from the wall, peeling it like a potato peeler. And when the wagon slowed down and I regained full control, I pulled away from the wall and continued on my way. The damage? I thumbnail-sized scratch where the chrome was buffed off of the bumper. Bit I digress. In the 'verse, my daily driver when solo or with a friend is my 400i. It is the fastest ship in most cases. Some ships are faster in space, some are faster in atmo, but the 400i is fast in both. There are only a few multi-crew ships ships faster than it in space, and in atmo, IIRC, it's just some fighters, racers, and the Herald. Your point about dampner vs. dampener is one that I hadn't really even thought about but a good one. I think you're probably spot on with it coming from other Sci-Fi (esp. Star Trek) using things like "Inertial Dampeners".

Damper's corresponding verb is dampen, which means to deaden, restrain, or depress. Of course, dampen also means to make slightly wet. A dampener is someone or something that dampens. So damper and dampener can both refer to one that deadens sound vibrations.

Fantastic video, very entertaining and informative. One aspect, for me, while defining the pool of daily drivers, is solo-ability. SC is very much a team game, but there are many times when my friends/Org mates aren’t around or interested in playing what I want, when I want. While I am concierge, I think the smart approach, for most, is to only have a daily driver, and experience the rest of the game as a crew member. I focus a lot on the ccu mini game, and say that the earlier you can start the further you can stretch your pledge dollars and the longer you can stay unapplied, the further you can stretch your pledge dollars. Also staying unapplied allows flexibility to shift to a different ship should development move in a direction that you don’t care for. Given that, during Alpha, I would advise the under $65 usd variety of daily driver ships. Efficient for just after wipes, and a good way to use an asset that you’ve spent money on. Always retain a starter ship, and a medium/large general utility ship that allow you to roll a small vehicle into or at least 32 SCU cargo internally and good solo pilot fire power

The bottom of the backset can fold up Then you can remove the head rests using the same way you would adjust them Then you can fold down the back you just removed the headrest from and it'll sit flush with the back trunk area expanding the cargo room It's a feature more useful in the hatchback versions. I actually sold my first and owned my second Ford focus before I figured this out.

In all fairness, if you really drenched a quantum drive via a 'dampener', it would probably also cease to function and maybe even start a fire. Now if only we could teleport water. My daily driver chnaged so many times over the past few years. I have supported development a decent amount, but I'm pretty certain I can do anything in game that interests me (aside from base building) with what I have now. I started out wiht the humble aurora, and got absolutely blasted in combat (skil issue, I know), so my first other purchase was a Sabre. It wasn't my thing in the end, and the Sabre became a Cuttie Black. Then my Cutte became a Corsair. Now the Corsair is almost a bit big for solo bunker missons and VHRT bounties. Maybe it will become something entirely different when future concepts come out.

When they would go shopping, the truck would come back loaded with groceries. I think lots of people can use a truck, I just hate the show-pony truck. When I came back to the project in 2020 I needed a new account (forgot I deleted the associated email with the old one) so I went for a 100i because about 10 years ago now it was more or less a flight sim and if I hadn't've kept up on the progress of the game I would not have recognized it. Let me tell you, there was a huge difference between watching and playing. My first day I met a well off evocati member who liked teaching new players and he took me to a clear security post kareah to get some Merc experience in and get some more gear than what he paid for. I loved it and we loaded bodies on his carrack then dipped out. I made it on my own for a while and bought some ground vehicles with my "fuck around fund" and suddenly needed a way to transport my gear and vehicles so I looked at the smaller ships that could carry a tumbril truck and dragonfly. It came down to the cutty and the freelancer base models. Because I was a bad pilot still I chose the chunkier freelancer, and I found out that my cybertruck didn't fit too well, so I stuck with just a dragonfly and felt badass as fuck with my bike and my ship. I bought those things with in game money. The next things I got were with cash, I got a freelancer max upgrade for my 100i game package and bought a dragonfly so I always had one. I knew I liked bigger ships because I could haul more vehicles and more bodies, and I enjoyed the heavier feel. Tried my hand at medic Gameplay, did piracy, and even simple cargo and drug smuggling. At that point I did bounty hunting, and made/recieved enough for a carrack with in game money, and I loved it, used it all the time for everything I could. When the wiped occurred for the first time in my recent play history I was devastated because I fell in love with my big chonky ship that held my small ship and car. I toughed it out in my max and thought hell might as well subscribe. Got an arrow to test and crashed it almost immediately because it was the first ship I had flown in forever that was small and maneuverable. When I heard about the corsair, I bided my time and bought one and it's been my daily ever since. I currently commit space war crimes with my little green bobble head buddy on my console and my whiskey flask in the copilot seat. For one patch cycle I lived on the corsair sticking to the crusader Planetary orbit and rarely ever saw a city port. It was just waking up at grim or bed logging from orbit. I remember feeling so accomplished when I made like 18m from merc and bounty work, and my corsair always looked badass because the paint slowly got stripped and it looked like a well lived in ship in between repairs. If ever there was a more perfect piracy vessel than the corsair, gods be damned. Who knows, maybe the zeus may change my mind? But until I find something with an armory, cargo bay, and medbay, nothing is replacing my corsair.

I primarily do PvE bounty hunting and salvage. My "daily driver" is a Cutlass Black but lately is rarely used. It's what I use when I'm not sure what I want to do. My ideal daily driver ship would be a good fighter that is quick, nimble and can can hull scrape and let me store removed weapons. Something that doesn't scream "easy kill" like the Vulture does. It would allow me to combine my two favorite activities.

The lifted truck bit was hilarious. I see it all the time and can tell my Jeep have seen more mud than those trucks will ever see lol. But i digress... About 3 days into the game and I love my Freelance. I got the Freelance and somehow I also got the Arrow. Don't remember seeing that as part of my starter pack. My bicycle fork has a rebound damping meaning it has an oil cartridge that slow the effects of recoil rebound to make the suspension smoother. If I change the fork oil and spill it all over, it’s now dampening my floor.

Im in love with my C1, i think that is it for daily random tasks. There is a lot of terms in games or movies that get us confused of mad with misuse, dampener/damper isnt the first of the last we will see. On top of all that, the daily driver and most of my fleet will be redone based on the CitizenCon demo on maintenance, cant relly on large ships if you dont have a dedicated friend to run with you daily. Big ships will cost a lot of money and time to maintain.

The Anvil Liberator taught me I'm very greedy: Hearing about the functions of the light carrier has made me wonder about the possibility for a type of ship which is just meant to hold a couple XS ships, some living amenities and have a large tank, to park in deep space or an orbit and use as a sort of base. I just need to give shout out to the Nomad, it's a solid ship. Yes in most categories you could call it a "cutty but worse", but it is $30 cheaper. I find it more fun to fly, far easier to land anywhere to Roc mine due to the antigrav landing gear and has a more homier interior. Can't really do ship bounties or multicrew though, a small damper 🙁

I just want to clarify, hover vehicles do not allow you to avoid turret fire currently (3.22) They currently view you as a hostile ship, and at least in my experience, blast a dragonfly out of the air in seconds.

Man, that explanation put a damper on my parade, but at least it wasn't a dampener. For me, the daily driver is the Corsair. I know it's a step up in price from the ones you listed, but it does a little of everything and has friend utility. It also is one of the only ships currently to have a heavy weapon storage rack, and the room at the docking port hatch makes for a great little armory.

I tend to reach for small/starter ships for a daily driver. My favorite is the 125a. Small, quick, and so satisfying to walk down the little stairs. The lack of combat strength and inability to carry any vehicles tends to dampen my enthusiasm, though. Like a wet blanket. So lately I've been daily-driving a Cutter. It's surprisingly good in combat thanks to how tanky it is, and I like the ability to carry an STV, even if it's a little tricky to park it so you can get around.

Thanks for the content. Very interesting take. I agree with you for than many other similar videos on this. For me, my 'daily driver' changes with what I fill like doing. Ultimately it turns out being what I feel like would be the most fun at that time. Personally, I find the Terrapin is my go-to ship for bunkers and exploring. I'm loving the C1, I will certainly use it often, it is big though. That said, I go out in fighters often, do a couple bunkers, a couple bounties, some service beacons. I really don't need loot, so a fighter is fine. It's all about having fun...first and foremost. Buy what you can afford. Get others in game.

Damper was also called a dashpot in my EE motorcycle shock simulator :). My DD lately is my cutter scout, decent for search missions and hanging out, not as cozy as the Nomad, but unlike the Cutless there is a shoilet. I imagine 12 guys on the cutlass steel, legs crossed, holding it for a long jump 😅

All I know is that the cutlass steel might be a good daily driver, but when it rains it’s gotta be damper in there than any other ship.. due to it being held together by duct tape.

The 890J I found out only uses a docking pad if you go to a station, so landing isn't as easy as the rest. The Carrack at least can take off from a hanger bay, but its entrance is strange (only 1 in front) and you have to go to back of ship to go up, then you have to go all the way back to the front to get back to the cockpit. I don't like the Carrack since it takes like 10 doors to get to the cockpit, they really need an elevator/ladder to cockpit or quicker access then the way it is....that is what keeps me from using it.....that entrance. It takes probably a minute to get to the cockpit once you enter the ship. I started with the Aurora as my pledge and upgraded to the C8R, which works really well for getting up to lvl5 bunkers, and it has cargo space to take back all the loot you grab.

My go to daily is usually the 400i nice and roomy, very fast, has s4 hardpoints for PvE ship combat, and has a decent cargo hold for its class, not to mention it will soon be carrying my X1 Force. Plus it just looks amazing

Dampen doesn't only mean to make things wet but "to check or diminish the activity of", so I don't think it is the incorrect term in SC but simply the other meaning of the word. Damper means what you say but in Australia it also refers to a specific type of bread, so context is also important 🙂

@@OddJobEntertainment To be honest, as per dictionary definition either is appropriate for a starship. Both damper and dampener have meaning that mean to 'subdue' or 'restrain' or 'inhibit'. So the terminology used in SC is utterly correct.

The economy of the game kind of shapes the choice of daily driver. The C1 is supposed to be my cutlass replacement for now but industry ships are starting to become daily driver material.

I opted for the nomad as my starter ship and have been happy with it so far. It can do some cargo runs, and can carry a roc.

The Nomad is a great option. It kind of skirts the line for the weight class I've described here.

LOL I have a Damper on my bike for the steering but we always call it Dampener as if it is what id does as the damper dampens the steering and prevents a tank slapper. As for a daily driver and spending to much erm yes I range between the 400i and the MSR both bigger ships than they should be but then the Pisces C8R is a great run around you can do box missions land anyplace just wished it had 4 hard points like the Explorer maybe the Zeus could be a good one or the Spirit E1 / C1 . if the corsair tuned better than a brick then that would be a good one too. But when the Perseus is out I am going to use that no matter how bad it flies or how hard it is to land just because It will looks cool

It actually damps the spring forces on the fork thereby slowing the movement to make it more controllable.

my daily driver is a ram 2500 cummins lol i drive a big truck cause i used to drive semi truck for 16 years and my daily driver is usually the carrack or the cat or c2 or even the HH just to play with it, i also own the Orion and Polaris. i almost to Sky marshal in Concierge.

As much as I love my cutter as daily driver, the Nomad is just the better ship. It can even fit a ROC in the back and it will get a tractor beam next patch! Only downside would be the awkward buttons in the Cockpit.

did know about the difference of dampen and dampeners but never gave it much though. Very nice and clear video, if the freelancer max just had better cockpit field of view and brought up to modern ship standards i think its the one for me.

Great video, I really enjoyed your style! I do think it’s worth including the constellation and talk about this kind of thing, though I know they’re a little big and unwieldy for a lot of people. For me though, it’s really hard to beat the Taurus for all around capability and value. There’s very little it cannot do.

I thought about including a "super daily" category. Ultimately, I decided not to convolute my definition more. But if you're willing to sacrifice some ease of use, the next weight class is fun to fly as well. My biggest complaint about the Connies are that stupid bar across the center of your vision. I hope it gets deleted in the inevitable rework.

Haven't gotten the game, but the Pisces would likely be my pick for it's versatility even after I get bigger and better ships in-game. The only thing putting a damper on my enthusiasm is the slow progress of development (I first discovered the game in 2015) and I don't have a PC beefy enough to run it well. After cit con though, I'm looking to get it next November if they follow through on their promises!

One thing that is a focus for me when considering a daily driver is what size quant drive does it have and what is its range. Size 2 minimum for me. Love the Titan, but until you upgrade the quant drive, you'll be running out of quantanium quite often. The C1 Spirit flies swimmingly in atmosphere. It's a great feeling. Couple that with 64 SCU cargo and a very effective tractor beam, it's the best choice atm for me. Looks can also matter when choosing a daily driver. While I appreciate it's design language/theme, the Cutlass Black is not my cup of tea. Neither is Origin's posh feel. Crusader and RSI seem to strike a nice balance between the two. Have a feeling the choices are about to get more difficult with the alien manufacturers getting ready to make a large leap into the game. Mirai's Vanguard competitor, the Gatac Railen and a new starter ship from Gatac.

@@OddJobEntertainment True. That is the worst aspect of IAE, lol. Should I upgrade this and buy that, or keep this and buy the other one. The looks draw me in first, but ultimately the decision is made by whether or not it would be useful and fun for my "fleet". I think the Gatac Railen could be both. The new Gatac starter, not so much. It's cool and unique, but wouldn't serve much of a purpose for me compared to ships I already have.

Having flown the Syulen, my love is kind of squashed. It's still very cool, but it has a very frustrating cargo arrangement that I think hampers its usefulness as a starter.

A point of note with regards to your friend wanting the Apollo Medivac as a daily driver; unless the Apollo gets a size increase it should be around the size of a Zeus Mk II or Spirit so would be a daily driver option (I daily drive a Connie Taurus which I agree is a bit on the big side but its small landing gear footprint lets it park in smaller areas and works for me). He should consider getting a CCU to one during IAE if he thinks he'll like it. I wouldn't be surprised if a $250 warbond for the ship is offered during RSI's IAE days which would mean a $10 Connie Andromeda to Apollo Medivac CCU would allow him (after its release) to CCU from whatever ship that's less expensive than the Andromeda he's daily driving up to the Apollo at any time during the year since the Andromeda is always on sale. If he loses interest in it or its size increases to where it's not a legitimate daily driver then he can melt it for $10 of store credit towards whatever other ship he wants.

I do need to look more into the Apollo, the pictures make it seem massive as do the recent showcases of the whitebox. It really makes me think it's gotten bigger and they haven't said anything.

The A1 with the new 3.21.1 patch has came back as my daily flyer. It definitely is not combat capable and good for bunker busting. It also is a sexy ship. The Zeus MR is definitely calling to me, but the A1 is soo smooth, maneuvers really well, and now can do some PVE bounties, while being able to hold a small ground vehicle.

I have the A1 as a loaner atm, because of the Zeus MR. It's a fun ship. I like "securing" landing zones for my friends dropping in to sell vice. It's got a wicked default Q drive as well. So I'm always outpacing them.

Its so hard for me because I dont have that much spare money, but I like 3 Things: Bounties Cargo and fps combat sometimes so its dificult for me to find just one ship that fits all of that very well and has style to it, I always admired the corsair as its somewhat good for al three and also looks ok, but its just very expensive out of game.

I don't know where i fall on the damper vs dampener argument. When you adjust suspension you change the dampening, no the damping. That just sounds crazy.

But you are actually changing the damping. You're altering the spring and damping forces.
