I believe in this soooo much!! I've only been playing fora little over 4 months. no tennis experience and all that. just yesterday I did some wall drills before free play at a local gym && I could tell my game play was a lot better than usual. I even won some games against exceptional players. I surprised myself! lol I'm gonna be doing wall drills a lot more now!

Yes! Do it before you even put your paddle up. Lots of players get impatient and don't warm up enough before starting. You'll be ahead of the game!

Love this! Inspired me to build a practice area in my garage using a 4’ x 4’ hard composite board over the drywall this weekend. Doing all your suggested routines plus adding in one where I work on varying how tight my paddle grip is. (I get pretty amped while playing and need to work on mixing in a soft touch when appropriate.)

Good Luck with your drills Denise! One other quick tricks to use in your garage setup: 1) If have drywall on your garage walls, you can attached a sheet of hardwood type plywood or MDO over the wall to increase it's rigidity, and get better return on the balls (it also reduces the noise a bit). Thanks for watching!

Throw a roll of masking tape in your bag along with a tape measure & you'll be all set at the local courts. Many tennis courts also have backboards. I recommend using the Blue Painters tape because it doesn't leave a residue or peel off any finish on the walls. Good luck!

Foam balls can work well indoors at home if you have a few feet of hard floor somewhere. I like the Tourna foam ball, not exactly the same as hitting a pickleball, but it still helps build muscle memory and coordination skills. Buy a case and hand them out to your friends and people starting up with lots of potential. (not sponsored to say this! the larger tennis indoor balls are a little too heavy and develop a ton of topspin so I like the Tourna foam balls - you can buy on amazon, a case of 12 is about $17)

Thanks Glen, did my first set of wall drills today, doing 10 in a row is much harder than it sounded let alone 100. Looking forward to my next set of drills. I was struggling to find a place to drill so i went to the local elementary school which has a large windowless wall and it was perfect. I am planning on constructing a wall in my two stall garage so i can practice close to home.

Keep it up, Daniel! The drills really do work. The intensity of drills like these are 10x what you experience playing pick-up games and can really build that perfect form muscle memory!

This is cool and I know doing these drills would definitely make a huge difference in people's games. I have to wonder though, are these really all the drills you did for an entire Winter? I've been doing a ton of wall drills lately and there are just so many different ways to drill with a pickleball and a wall, this video just seems like such a tiny introduction to wall drills and it would be very surprising if this wasn't just the tip of the iceburg of what was actually done over that Winter.

To take wall practice up a notch, I add in a “speed up and reset” session. From the nonvolley line I alternate between a controlled speed up and a soft dink.

I do this on courts\wall whenever I cannot find other partners for play. But lately have been accosted by some fellow pickleballers saying that it is most disruptive to adjacent courts during games! Hmmmm so we are just to sit idle while other players are enjoying the courts? Would appreciate some pickleball etiquette here. On outside courts there are backwalls in place to practice and never a problem there during games however, like I said inside courts many were taking offence.
@PickleballCentral4 жыл бұрын
We cannot advise you on etiquette in this situation. The Official Rules address Distractions in Section 11.J, "Players may not distract an opponent when the opponent is about to play the ball...." Generally, distracting players during a game isn't a good idea.

I'm only 5'10" and 36 inches hits my hip(iliac crest) almost perfectly. That tape looks like it is well above Glen's hips...as high as his belly button. Maybe parallax at play or was that tape put up by 'eye'?
@PickleballCentral5 жыл бұрын
It may be parallax at play (had to look that word up - great word - grin). This tape line is on Pickleball Central's (Pickleball Station's) back wall, and has been measured by tape by our pro staff for use in drills during clinics, and people warming up. Thanks for watching, and for sharing your perspective.

Being a little bit of a wise ass, but seriously, if as you said, you are looking at the ball and not at the target, how do you know when you've hit the target? So then, how do you know when you've hit 10 in a row? If you're counting the hits in the target, you are seeing the target. No?

Let's just say there was more involved to get to 5.0 than hitting against a wall for a few months.
@PickleballCentral4 жыл бұрын
Glen's response - Of course you are right. I was already a 4.5 level player. What I lacked was the ability to dink consistently and patiently. Adding this skill with my wall drill is what moved me to 5.0.
@saxologist13 жыл бұрын
Great idea and thanks for posting. But it takes a lot more than this drill to become a 5.0 player.
@michelledelaney42712 жыл бұрын
i actually became a 6.0+ professional pickleball player just from practicing against my garage wall. JUST KIDDING. The wall practice does help me TREMENDOUSLY. I totally agree that it takes a lot more than wall practice to become a 5.0. It definitely HELPED me a ton on my road to 5.0 but there are tactical and strategic subtleties that can only be acquired from playing against real life higher level players ect. Having said that, my toughest opponent is STILL my garage wall. I have not been able to get a SINGLE ball past him. He is literally a WALL :)

So last January, I put up a section of moveable net and placed it approximately 14 inches from the basement wall. I stand 18-20 feet back and drop serve into the wall and practice 3rd shot drops into the 14 inch slot between the wall and the net after the ball bounces hard off the wall. I literally charted 100 a day since then. I can get around 70% In, but the 3rd shots and resets in games have really improved 😊

Thanks so much for this! While I have set up a wall board in my basement, it is quite loud to the rest of the family. When they are around, I now use a Prince Stay/Play foam tennis ball. Not exactly the same bounce characteristics of a pickleball but something is better than nothing and it particularly reinforces a lighter touch since the foam ball bounces back easier.
@patpowers54262 жыл бұрын
I do the same drill. Here’s another layer to the drill.Try it facing a corner. Mark your target where the inside seams of the corner are on the wall.The ball deflects back at unpredictable angles. Very difficult but effective.
