I'm impressed you said mental is 80% of the game. So true, I feel like I'm losing to players I'm technically better because of the mental aspect. Freezing up, going down that worry spiral.

Recreational pickleball is more fun to play and watch. It is not the constant dink around at the net but with more full court play . The serve is competitive and strategic. This is how the majority of recreational players play as it is more fun.

You referenced Japanese PB being influenced by table tennis paddle skills - could you do a deeper dive on this. Also, badminton players and strategy seem to be influencing PB. I am always look for more on strategy and point construction.

As a badminton player and now pickleball player I would say that there are a definitely skills from badminton that transfer and are very useful in pickleball. Hand battle speed and generally playing shots around the kitchen from slightly odd positions around your body are definitely something that you do all the time in badminton but which the tennis players are very much less used to. The only shot I think the badminton players truly have a big advantage with is the overheads. The amount of smashing in badminton means that they should be very good at getting on any even slightly loose lifts or lobs and they are likely hitting it back down very effectively.

I played a fair amount of table tennis in high school and (like any person with racquet or paddle experience) tried to translate some of those skills to pickleball. My experiences have resulted in sharing the following tips: 1. Good table tennis players know how to and will utilize the split step. It keeps you balanced and in control when placing shots. 2. Hand-eye coordination is key. It develops an instinct to react to the moving ball. If you don’t, practice these types of drills to help develop your reflexes an touch sensitivity. 3. As with table tennis, the wrist is NOT the key to make you a potent shot maker. It "window dressing". Work on the fundamentals first. It is way more beneficial to learn how to execute technique with a locked/fixed wrist and THEN add wrist (to your liking) after you've developed that skill rather than experiment with wristy shots at the onset. Developing confidence with control, touch and shot accuracy is easier and more useful than adding the variability with a moving wrist. Fact: the slightest change in wrist motion introduces more inaccuracies than any other join in the arm. 4. Go for pace over spin. Spin can be hard to decipher and return. So, it important good to have it in your toolkit ... but if you ever watch good players, they win more points off pace, compared to spin. 5. If you introduce spin on your serves or returns, make top and side spin a priority. They are less costly than slice/backspin. 6. Drill.

Agree 100%! With power and accuracy, shots like drips and baseline/mid court attacking shots will increase. Shaped attacking dinks will also take over, especially with newer tech. Thus the need for 2 handed backhands and the ability to use different grips. More extreme grips will increase, which brings more spin, power, accuracy.

Exactly! I didn’t touch on grips, but you bring up a great point. Will definitely be interesting 🎉

On a somewhat related note, are there Pickleball places in Japan? I was there last month and was hoping to find at least one place but I could not find a single store or place related to Pickleball. Also its awesome that its picking up so much worldwide. Id love to play when we travel abroad in the future.

It might be like the UK, there may not be many specific pickleball facilities, but badminton is definitely a popular sport there, so all the many many sports halls that have badminton courts marked will be suitable for pickleball (which is essentially played on a badminton court).

The video you showed at 1:00, I believe is in Vietnam, not Japan. I haven't seen any pickleball craze or growth in Japan but the opposite in Vietnam. OB Pickleball. Quang Duong was just there

They don’t have film from the Japan tournament my friend. I was just showing pro Willy Chung who’s a top player in Asia. Hope that helps!

Asian and South American countries like. Peru, China, India, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia etc. just like their domination in the small court games ( cricket, table tennis, badminton, squash). Pickleball and Paddleball are sports that suit their size. Watch this, it will happen.

Exactly! It’s going to be a crazy year from all around the world. Pickleball like we have never seen before

Don’t forget about Europe a lot of people going from paddle to pickleball now
@SultanKhan66Күн бұрын
The only reason they are dominant in those sports is because in the USA there isn't much interest in them. Just like Soccer. No one really cares.

The game footage of Willy was in Vietnam. If the tournament in Japan is PJF tournament (where Ignatowitch showed up) then Willy wasn’t there, so he isn’t the Taiwan player mentioned. Either that or the ref confused Japan and Vietnam.

Yeah I scrounged that footage up cause there isn’t any from Japan unfortunately!

With the increase in offensive firepower, I think that resetting balls into the kitchen (when back in the transition zone) and reset dinking will be even more important (to avoid giving the opponents put away opportunites.

Once the serves becomes a “weapon,” a rule change will come to slow down the serve…as it already has many times already.

I don't think dinking is dead. I think it is just turning into a more offensive strategy or a last resort.
@pickleballplaybookКүн бұрын
Exactly! Dead dinking is close to dead, but not offensive and neutral dinking. You’re exactly right
@XM.rippleeffect20 сағат бұрын
I agree. I think some folks think that because there has been a big increase on offensively attacking the thirds, so it creates a different dynamic on what one will do on the fourth and fifth.

its almost the same video as your last one about Modern Pickleball...
@pickleballplaybookКүн бұрын
Yeah very similar. I felt that my last one didn’t dive deep enough into all the things that need to be focused on. The last one was more about the shift of fast passed pickleball, this one was more about the actionable steps each of us need to take in order to win this upcoming year. I hope you enjoyed it 😊

Willy is a great player and a nice guy, but why would you write that he's #1 in Asia when that's obviously not true?
@burritosburritosКүн бұрын
The funnest part of pickleball for me is to have long drawn out points with women, but but not obviously looking like you're playing down. The positive feedback I get from that is quiet nice.

I've been playing pb for 1.5 years. I see zero dinking. Literally, nobody in rec games dink.
@TheJonbonesjones19 сағат бұрын
Def not playing at a high enough level then lol. Anyone 3.5 and above should be dinking if even a little
@Wongsquared18 сағат бұрын
As a rec player I used to never dink but now I'm at the level where I can't overpower my opponents anymore. Their reaction speed and ability to reset made me understand the importance of drinks and resets. Against less experienced players I can constantly drive and speed up to win but now picking and choosing when to speed up has provided me with better results.
