I like how 90% of these highlights were Gavin not knowing how to say something

5:34 what Gavin is getting at here is actually one of the fundamental thought experiments when talking about special relativity. He is imagining a reference frame that is stationary relative to the universe itself. Sadly no such reference frame exists as wherever you are in the universe, everything else appears to be moving away from you at a rate proportional to its distance from you, due to the expansion of space. The universe has no stationary reference frame, so we always measure things relative to something that appears stationary relative to us, such as the Earth

There is no one center of the universe. The universe expands like a balloon, but we are on the skin of the balloon. All points are the center if the expansion.

Dakota Cloud That's not necessarily true. All that analogy is meant to demonstrate is that we can't find that centre, not that there isn't one
@Name-di3ku
@Name-di3ku 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Hart actually that analogy is used to visualize the universe expanding in 4 dimensions. We can only observe 3 dimensions Imagine you can only see 2 dimensions and you are standing on the skin of a balloon, to you the balloon would look like a flat circle, when it starts expanding someone tells you to find the center, you could walk all around the balloon and never find it, and it would always seem to be a flat circle expanding outwards and everywhere is equally close to the middle, which is inside the balloon

I never understood that metaphor --what finally made it make sense to me was Brian Greene's explanation: Since the Big Bang was *the entire universe,* that means that it happened *everywhere at once.* It wasn't just matter and energy expanding into already-existent space; it was *space itself* expanding into *Mu.*

gavin is right about the "drone in space thing" I mean the situation is impossible, bc things like the rotating galaxy are in a closed system, but yes the drone would appear to zoom off.

7:11 now I get Gavin's question, the drone would shoot to the wall and splatter if it was to be put alone in momentum and not making side the earth's rotation. Imagine the eath stopped rotating... we would all fly across the rooms and splatter to the closest object from the force.

Discussion around 7:45, that question was answered by Einstein in his theory of relativity. That was the entire basis of the problem with Newtonian physics.

Also Burnie is thinking about the "Centre of the universe" in the wrong way. The big bang didnt happen at one point in space and then everything moved away from that. The big bang happened literally everywhere all at once because all of space itself was contained with that one point. every point in the universe could be considered to be the centre of the universe, because no matter where you are, everything will be appearing to move away from you (unless it is influenced by gravity or other forces of course). The universe has no fixed point
@ThreadBomb
@ThreadBomb 5 жыл бұрын
You are overthinking it. Everything is moving on a trajectory line away from a central point. That point is the center of the universe.
@johni0018

@@ThreadBomb No. Everything isn't moving away from a central point. Space itself is expanding everywhere.

For future reference, be wary of abbreviations/acronyms because G.P.S is Global Positioning System, by adding the word "system" at the end yourself, you make it redundant. It's the same with ATM (machine - wrongly) because A.T.M is Automatic Teller Machine (not Machine machine).

My guess for what pilates was turned out to be way off. I thought it was an exercise which doesn't improve one's physique in any meaningful way and serves only as an activity which excuses you from engaging in an activity which would help you prepare for a conceivable practical physical feat.

The center of the universe conversation pisses me off, not because of anything they said, but because the terminology we use is misleading. The singularity wasn't a literal single point floating around in an empty universe. The universe WAS the singularity. And if the universe is infinite, then so too was the singularity--it was just infinitely denser. So there _is_ no center of the universe.
