I think Brasson studied Sam Fullers movie Pickup on South Street for the pickpocket sequences. Love both films.

@Peter Kelner That is not true. He has watched a lot of films, and definitely studied them. He even liked James Bond films.

@@inco9943 'Ironic way' seems like conjecture. Nevertheless, anyone after the Lumières and Méliès who claims to have never studied films is simply lying. Bresson was an exceptional filmmaker, and there is no doubt about it. But his own Bressonian austere style is preceded by Melville who had done it before him. Melville took much offence when someone referred to his film as 'Bressonian', and said he did it before Bresson. And Bresson definitely did not make 'The Trial of Joan of Arc' without studying Dreyer's film, even if it was much different. Yes, his influences from his own life as a painter and a prisoner of war are immense. But there is no reason to believe films had no effect on him at all.
