I highly recommend you and your husband swapping spots in your family “formation”. He can bring up the rear. I hope you enjoyed your time in Paris. ❤️

Use a bread wrapper tie to connect your zippers to your o-ring on your purse when you travel anywhere pickpockets may be. Wind it up well. They can’t risk the time it takes to unwind it. I also have a smallish crossbody purse with leather ties on the zipper. I double knotted them to my o-ring & kept valuables inside there. Again, lots of trouble for them to get into. There are easier marks out there. I’ve done this in London, Paris, & Rome and stayed safe. If you need to get at your money, you can take the time to untie it. A bit inconvenient but, rather that than lose it. Never leave anything valuable in a zipper compartment that is not secured. Pickpockets don’t usually get violent but can push up against you and crowd you or cause a distraction or disturbance around you. That’s when they open that zipper, slide into that bag, or pick that pocket. Nice that your fellow passenger helped you out. Most of them are very nice and don’t want tourists hassled either.

I was pickpocketed in Nice outside the train station. In 1983. They are good. Very good. Got into my purse and got my wallet. But all my documents were in a pouch sewn into my back brace. Cannot be too careful. Glad you’re okay.

Oh Jen! How awful to have such a frightening experience on the metro. As a female solo traveler, I have learned the hard way to put actual locks on all my zippers. I have been in some scary situations, but never with a child. I applaud your strength to keep it together and protect Griffin. I am glad you were still able to enjoy Disney and your Air BnB. Many countries in Europe have those styles of grocery stores where part of it is food, and the other part is lots of other things such as electronics, home goods, clothes, bedding, etc. I've been to some that even sell furniture! I think Target got the idea from European stores, and is trying to introduce the idea into the US, along with Walmart with their Super Stores.

Sorry about the bad experience it’s unfortunate you had to go through it. Stay safe ! Omg Auchan opened in the US In Illinois in the 90s. It was a very good store with excellent prices and sales I loved it. Unfortunately they closed after some local people protested against them since it wasn’t an American store. Too bad many loved it !

A little surprised that you did not mention that the Eurostar went under the channel in a 20 minute long tunnel. Sady not surprised by the attempted pickpocketing- it is rife in Paris - even inside Disney! But glad you are all ok. Now you now change formation so that hubby is last so he can see what is happening!

So sorry you had such a scary experience. The Metro is usually pretty safe, but pickpockets seem to have an uncanny ability to spot American tourists. I don't know if it would have helped to make some noise when those bug guys hemmed you in. Sometimes a very loud "Excuse me!!" calls unwanted attention to the miscreants and they'll leave you alone, but nothing works the way it used to.

Not sure if you know this, but Google has a translate option that if you hold your phone up to the stuff that needs translating, it'll do it! I saw this on the top flight video when they visited Japan and wanted to know what the menu said. Lol obviously I had to find a Chinese menu I have at home and it totally works!

I'm so sorry about the experience you had on the metro. When you are traveling in busy public areas, the anti-theft purse is a decent option, but more importantly, you want to put it around you & wear a jacket over top of it, so that it's difficult to tell that you even have it with you (at least that's the kind of thing that was recommended when I lived in Europe - but that was many years ago). Thank goodness you were not physically hurt, although the mental toll it takes on you was probably just as difficult as physical injury. I do hope that the remainder of your trip goes smoothly (& of course, a similar incident could have happened anywhere, whether in the US or abroad, and thank goodness there was a good person behind or beside you who witnessed what happened & was able to get your phone back for you).

I ALWAYS wear a bumbag or as you call it in USA a fanny pack when traveling abroad. Means I can tuck it under a coat or clothing and I can keep my valuables (phone, wallet, money 💵) safe.

I understand about having to pay for the bathroom usage. When I was in Mexico, I had to pay approximately 10 cents for one sheet of toilet paper. It's so poor there. I still remember we were driving late at night, and kids were selling Chicklets gum or whatever. And flowers. So glad you are okay. My dad will only drive places now.

The fact that those big guys went aggressive on you is so terrifying. I am 18 and never travel solo because of this reason . One of my classmates encountered a similar situation in metro( india ) . The man was drunk and was demanding to hand over her phone . She ended up giving the phone and ran away from him . Atleast she was safe . . Pls stay safe everyone

If you want to be safe on the Metro act like you live in Paris! Pickpocketers target tourists and avoid looking at your phone or on a map. Don’t travel near the Eurostar station as it has lots of pickpocketers.

I’m shocked they were so aggressive. Glad you are okay. My family always laughs at my crossbody bag ( it isn’t very cute)because it is the one from travelon with locked zippers. my dear friend was followed from an airport in Spain by guys on scooters (she was driving a rental car). They forced her off the road and stole the car. She is a very savvy worldwide traveler, this kind of crime is insidious and they are getting more aggressive and dangerous. So, yes, the kindly Oliver Twist pickpocket / gentleman theifs are a thing of the past. You were straight up assaulted, not pickpocketed.

Typically happens in France. Especially tourists on the shuttle buses to Disneyland. My mum had some Asian lady try to pick pocket. Be very careful.

The Croque Mcdo is a French toasted sandwich called a croque miseur and a croque Madam is the same except it has a fried egg on top 😊

When my family gets into a crowded place, my husband is always in the back. I’m in the front with the little one, the two oldest are behind me, then he is behind all of us so he can make sure we are all good. Your formation is a great idea, but switch up the front and back. That way your husband can see everything. Unfortunately, women are the main targets. You did a great job at getting away and protecting your little one.
