Same thing happened to me in Paris. My friends and I got on the subway and suddenly there were 3 teenagers asking for the time. A lady next to spoke in English and said don't talk to them they are trying to distract and steal from you. We were very grateful.

I followed a pickpocket in Vegas. He was acting drunk and wobbly, and always seemed to wobble into people that were approaching, which made me look closer to confirm my suspicions. You could see his hands moving quickly in the moment of opportunity. No one who'd been bumped into seemed to suspect that the contact had been purposeful, so I guess he was pretty good. When he went into a casino I alerted security, but I don't know how the story ended. No real point other than to share, but perhaps it does illustrate that sometimes you will not know for sure what's up, which will prevent even a good and brave person from taking action. Saw a guy in Walmart in the tool section, not long ago -- seemed like he was putting stuff into his pockets. Couldn't tell though... Was a black guy, too, which made me reluctant to get involved for fear of being a suspicious creep to an innocent man. Coulda been putting back a Kleenex. "F-it..." I said & kept shopping. While waiting for a bus, watched an aggressive street dude really pestering a girl, asking her for money. She seemed distressed and when they passed by I put my hand on his chest and said, "She has no money for you." He was astonished & then angry that I'd deprived him of his prey. He walked around the block mumbling to himself, and when he came back around I was still there. Came very close then to a ferocious fight between two tough dudes. And what if he'd had a knife?Later, saw the chick & she was very grateful, so it was worth it, but... you can die in a dumb way out of the blue if you step in. The chicken life is safer & easier.

I saw a guy grab a gypsy on the underground in Rome. He had her up against the wall of the train demanding she return his wallet. She kept saying she didn't have it. At that point he started shaking her and what do you know, the wallet suddenly fell to the ground.

If you do a search for "Barcelona metro pickpockets", you'll find that they have patrols made up of volunteers from all nationalities resident in the city, who actively intervene when they catch someone in the act, in addition to warn passengers when they see the usual suspects on the platforms or on the trains.

The video helps a bit, hope the algorithm pushes it to locals and people planning to visit. Pickpocketing is unfortunately quite common in Europes touristy places that have packed streets and public transport. I always make sure I don't keep anything valuable in my pockets and my bag/purse must have a zipper. I make sure the zipper is closed and when in a crowded public area I hold onto the part where the zipper ends

Me and my mother were in Paris about a month ago and the Parisians are just lovely. The way they let tourists and each other know that there are pickpockets. A man kept repeating to us before he got of the train that there were pickpockets … then the whole train started shouting pickpockets and pointing at them and then a musician that played and accordion staring singing about them. It was great. They ran off the train at the next stop

Это было очень неприятно, хоть ничего не пропало. А больше всего я не понимала почему знакомый человек, который видел, что происходит, не помог мне. Я и после всегда в таких случаях помогала людям. Так это у цыган вызывало такую злость они просто бросались на меня. И особенно агрессивно вели себя дети. Они ненавидели меня за их неудачу обворовать. И никто вокруг не заступался в мою поддержку. Боялись будут мстить им. А я была смелая и не сдавалась😁 если не ты, то кто???

Когда электричка остановилась все стояли спокойно,мы стали заходить в вагон, они резко сгруппировались и толпой такой хаос создали, прямо в плотную зажали обоих, они так испугались, так растерялись, слава Богу не смогли ничего вытащить.После того, как мы зашли, точнее затолкали, они резко отступили, только один из них остался в вагоне, остальные не зашли. Тот, что был в вагоне, до следующей станции стоял напротив меня и всю дорогу мы смотрели друг на друга, я с ненавистью, а он понял, что он спалился и я знаю, что он вор. На цыгана был похож. Вот и эти две девочки на видео, тоже похожи на цыганок.

My brother in law almost got pickpocketed in the Paris Metro. He was shocked about it so couldn’t say anything. But since there were 8 of us in our group, the pickpocketer got too scared to leave the train with us. As the doors closed back on him, I yelled out “PICKPOCKET!” and pointed at the guy. As the train was leaving, you could see the entire crowd on the train step away from this man. What an awkward train ride for him. 😂

When my sisters were in Paris a few years ago, they went to breakfast at the hotel right before getting on the train. One of them dumped a whole jar of Nutella in her small purse and purposely left it unzipped. A pickpocket got a nice surprise when she reached into the bag. Happened with a group I was with in Paris in the early 90’s. It didn’t end on the train, they attacked us after we got off the train, had firecrackers thrown at us, tour directors wallet stollen, necklace yanked off one girls neck, another hit in the ear by a firecracker. It was crazy. We were trying to go to the Eiffel Tower, but that plan was changed after that.

My dad had his wallet stolen on holiday years ago. He was walking through a park and suddenly got lots of bird crap on him. A guy 'helped' him to clean up and when he went back to the hotel to change clothes his wallet was missing. He reported it to the hotel and local police but nothing was done about it. Years later he saw the same guy in a different place and took the guys picture then shared it on Facebook with a warning about what he had done.

It's important to know that in Paris, pickpockets risk nothing, especially if they don't have any form of identification. At worst, they'll go to the police station and be told that stealing is bad.

This happened to me in Vienna. We had been warned to watch for pick pockets. I was boarding the train and this girl shoved herself beside me. I saw her hand going in and I grabbed ahold of it and yelled STOP! She ran down the aisle and out the rear door. You have to be on guard all the time!

When I lived in NYC, I was on the subway and a guy put his hand in my back pocket to check for a wallet. I yelled, “Watch your stuff! He’s picking pockets!” Everyone ignored me. In 2011 I relocated to Paris for 2 years, I was pickpocketed inside a metro within my 2nd week and lost my debit and credit cards. This was before I had the opportunity to open a local bank account. The process of getting my back from back home to issue me with the new cards was lengthy and scary, without money in a foreign country. Thankfully I got to know my apartment mate better as he was super charitable during my cashless stint. He is a gentleman Poland, to this day I have my utmost respect and admiration for Polish people as he was a true ambassador.

You could tell the way that they got on first, set up a zone offence, and waited for their marks to be corralled towards one or the other with coordinated movements. All women, all bleach bottle blondes, one is chewing on gum like a camel and all from "traveller" families that live in these pimped out caravans, hence the familial similarities. Tbf, they are highly prejudiced against in Europe, and as a result, aren't given citizenship within many countries they try to live in, which makes it impossible to secure employment without paperwork. As such, what else can they do to support themselves and/or their families if you can't apply and/or maintain a legal job? You can't apply for government programs or assistance. You can't enrol your children into school. You're at the mercy of those who pay under the table because these employers know that they can get away with human rights and employment abuses because no one is going to protect them. With that sort of ingrained societal exclusion, they'd feel no loyalty to the social contract public. So, from their historical perspective and jaded worldview, why not view individual members of society at large as pawns to feed off of??? It would be an interesting socio-economic study if the morals of it weren't so fucked up.

The person who gave us directions and acted kind to us was the same man trying to pick pocket him but the pick-pocketer met my father in laws hand instead and my FIL shook his hand. This happened to me and a friend on the metro in Paris last year. 4 young girls were all in it together. Fortunately we had nothing taken but a few of the zippers on our security packs were opened. A kind Spanish-speaking woman helped warn us about them when they were attempting it. It happened during rush hour when it was most crowded. Scary!
