It shouldn’t have gone that fast nor covered so much ground so quickly. I spent 20 years driving econolines. Even with 351’s in those vans, they were slow. Im a service plumber and I have had all of the vans. We had the Nissan NV 2500 as well as the Mercedes Sprinter we had the chevy vans and now I currently drive a Ford Transit 3500 Dually. Hands down the Ford Transit is by far the best. I am not a Ford guy. I am typically a Chevy guy but when it comes to cargo van zile would have to say the Chevy was my least favorite. My 2016 Ford transit work van is the biggest pile of crap I've ever driven in my life. It's almost killed me when the drive shaft decided to break driving down the interstate last year. If I'm not mistaken I believe my boss has put 9k in repairs beyond factory warranty repairs with less than 70k miles on it. Did I mention it's already rusting on the roof and just last Friday the Def system failed. It's a diesel which is horribly unreliable. Right off the start you're (sadly) wrong - this can't tow much at all. Actually the smallest version of the Transit (150, swb, low roof) with the biggest engine (ecoboost, not diesel) has the highest tow rating in the fleet and it's still only 7500 lbs iirc. A couple years ago on the previous generation it topped out at 7100 lbs. The Sprinter is even lower, and the Promaster lower yet. The euro vans are real game changers to work out of - you'll never go back to a traditional American style van once you use one of these, but if you still need to tow they don't cut it. I really wanted one for my work but also needed to occasionally tow 7500-8000 lbs. That only left the Nissan NV2500/3500 to choose from. I ended up going with the 5.6 NV2500 rated at 9500 lbs (2016). I can assure you that 9500 lbs is only viable on flat land. Going over the Sierra is a 40 mph experience at 8000 lbs plus perhaps 1500-2000 cargo. I don't actually like my Nissan - the truck style hood is awful; just wasted space and uglier than a Sprinter. It also gets terrible mileage, averaging 13 mpg at sea level if I baby it even with a fairly light average load. With the 7500 lb rating of the 2020 Transit 150 I might be tempted to go that way when it comes time to replace the Nissan, but hopefully by then we'll have better options available.
@Pickuptrucktalk4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I’m ok being wrong. Like I said, I have a lot to learn about vans. I hope you’ll comment back, since I’m curious about your towing needs. Why? Do you really need to tow with a van? It seems like it’s large enough as is.
@donhappel99284 жыл бұрын
@@Pickuptrucktalk I use the van for work day to day and for that it is big enough. However a few times a year I use it to haul my rock crawler to places like Moab. The crawler weighs in about 6000 lbs and the trailer about 1500, hence why I targeted 8000 lb towing capacity. I could have bought a more efficient van for work and a separate truck for towing, but for the the half dozen or so times a year I go far enough to tow instead of drive the crawler I can't justify the cost of a separate vehicle. Given even half ton trucks are rated into the 10,000 lb range these days I was surprised to find the 3/4 and 1 ton version of the big vans were rated so low. By the same token I was somewhat surprised to see how low the mileage is compared to half ton pickups which are regularly in the 15-17 mpg mixed range compared to my 13; granted my van is a 3/4 ton but I don't think the 1/2 ton version would be any better with the same motor as it mostly comes down to aero.

On a full tank how many miles per gallon does it get?
@lulfukuslilfidde41072 жыл бұрын
We averaged 16 mpg from nw NM to anchorage, AK. That’s with a coachman beyond camper setup with awning and ac on top.

So on a full tank does it get up to 260 miles or 300 miles ?

Yeah if you drive civil it’ll get close to 400 on a tank

IFS versus Sprinter's solid axles? For campervan (RV) use, solid axles are probably better for light off-roading.

No matter. You’re not getting anywhere off road w 3’ of van behind the rear axle. Lucky if hitch isn’t scraping the occasional driveway apron around town
@donhappel99284 жыл бұрын
Remember the RV/campervan conversion sector is a tiny fraction of the market for these commercial vans. The Sprinter does come with a real 4wd vs the Transist's AWD, but neither is really intended for off-road work. More for winter road conditions or getting to an unimproved worksite.

Is this Ford F350 truck in a van body?
@ALMX5DP4 жыл бұрын
Ubon94 no, the Transit has it’s own unibody type chassis for the crew and cargo vans.
@Pickuptrucktalk4 жыл бұрын
This was a good question and I finally dug in a little. They call it a uni-ladder frame. This allows upfitters to alter the frame for more strength with the chassis cab configurations.
@Ubon944 жыл бұрын

Transit vans don't have truck frames, they are unibody.
@1smokan2 жыл бұрын
@Mike Studmuffin No it's not actually. Monocoque design is actually reserved for the most sophisticated high end vehicals. I did extensive research on this before I changed my fleet over to the Ford Transit vans. Every transit is equipped with Unibody Construction, making the body lightweight and highly durable, engineered with high-strength and boron steel.

@benboyd30824 жыл бұрын
@@alextran8188 there's no way that a unibody frame is stronger than an actual truck frame. Go look at an E-350/450 cab n chassis.
@ALMX5DP4 жыл бұрын
@@benboyd3082 Transit chassis cab uses a ladder frame as well to adapt to standard box/bed configurations. They just have the semi-unibody like you see here for crew/cargo vans. Though both have pros and cons, the Transit's design maximizes interior volume and is said to be more rigid than the previous ladder frame. Sure it'll have less towing ability, but i think Ford was focused on what owners of this vehicle use them for primarily, which is more small business uses that dont tow as much (if ever).
@benboyd30824 жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP well I can tell you first hand from seeing both in the yard at the Ford plant that the transit ladder frame is made out of multiple thin pieces of steel it's nowhere near a cutaway 350 frame that's all I was saying. I know I build em everyday.
