The engine plant for Ford is in Windsor Ontario for certain models, F250 6.8 and 7.3 I believe. I think about 30 percent of the parts on my old Ram were built in Mexico. Also some parts from China, including the battery for my current truck (not saying which one don't want to trigger lol). So even though the assembly plant is in the USA those parts get tariffed every time they cross a border. It's going to be a GD dumpster fire Tim. Up here in Canada the dollar is heading to 65 cents USD, so window sticker will have to be adjusted for that too. Cha ching.

I’m not trying to be political, but it’s time we stop allowing other countries to take advantage of us. As a proud legal immigrant who came to America 20 years ago, I remember asking my uncle, “Why are American jobs moving overseas?” What about the hardworking Americans who need those jobs? I’ve seen friends and neighbors lose their jobs because businesses relocate outside the U.S. I understand that tariffs may increase the price of trucks made in Mexico, but as a nation, we’ve become excessive spenders-constantly buying things we don’t really need. Most Americans have little to no savings or homeownership; we live in a cycle of consumption and waste. Maybe it’s time to shift our mindset-start saving for retirement and teaching our kids financial responsibility. I drive a 13-year-old Tacoma that runs great, and I have no reason to buy another truck. My two houses are paid off, and I’m only 40. Financial stability is possible with smart money management.

Americans: we want free market, capitalism rules. We want those cool vehicles they have everywhere else in the world like the Hilux, Land Cruisers, etc. let people buy what they want, Let the market/customers decide. Also Americans: tariffs!
@KG-kq9tk
@KG-kq9tk 20 сағат бұрын
You don't understand the point of the tariffs then or are purposefully playing ignorant. Yes, we DO want a free market....but we do not HAVE a freed market. We never really have. At least not in the last century....and especially the last 50 years. We have a heavily mixed market. So......we can either get our govt to completely take a hands off approach.....which yes....is 100% true free market.....OR....we can get our govt to make the US market free FROM the global market to a certain extent....which has pros and cons. No president alone....even if they wanted to....can actually get us out of the heavy mixed market mess we are in. But they can do certain strategic actions that push us closer to what free market is supposed to be in practice. But when thr market is global....other world powers are not intent on playing fair and free....and our OWN govt is already a murky mess that is way too involved in the market....implementing strategies that protect our home country's market and push IT towards being more free and fair....is a good step in the right direction. THAT is what the tariffs....when implemented strategically....are designed to do. Its an overall push towards a free market and less govt interference....by way of govt interference in the short term. Its not hypocrisy, its strategy. Your little "gotcha" just shows your own ignorance. My guess is it is willful ignorance. Your "logic" is the same logic as calling a small or anti govt idealist a hypocrite for running for office in the first place. When that is the only way to actually change anything when the govt already exists or is already way to big. You still have to use the mess that already exists to clean itself up wether you philosophically ideally want that or not.

Another thing that wasn't mentioned is parts. I'm in Canada and looking ahead for maintaining my two GMs, stuff from the US will likely get slapped with a counter tariff. What will happen is that we will be looking at other countries (mainly China) to supply us with parts. In all this, all of North America will suffer. Parts from Mexico will be exempt since they are still part of the free trade agreement so we'll just bypass the US.

How high can they raise the prices before people decide to hold on to their vehicles longer? Idk. Tough question. For the moment they are ok selling 1m units a year. They do not tax the MSRP. It's supposed to be what the importer paid (not retail) aka commercial value. Also, even if it did hit MSRP, that wouldn't entirely pass to consumers. The reason is that supply chains have at least some flexibility. More trucks would get shipped from Mexico to other countries, while trucks made in other countries that are not subject to tariffs would be imported. Then there's competition - GM simply wouldn't be able to compete against other domestic manufacturers like Ford, who makes most of their trucks in the US. What would happen is GM would ramp to the max production in the US and slow production in Mexico. This is why such simple calculus on tariffs has never worked, and never will.
@thebigguy

There are two reasons for tariffs - raising revenue and encouraging the manufacturing of the product in the home country. I'm all for the latter of the two and the first is how our federal government operated for the first 100 years, so not an all bad thing either.

Toyota's hino division is already hugely popular in the class 5-7 market. Toyota has a way better chance of competing in the 3/4 ton class. Nissan failed in their in between 1/2‐3/4 ton imaginary market because its Nissan. Nobody aspires to buy a Nissan unless its a classic. But with their current cluster fudge of an engine and horrible build quality of the 22+ Tundra, toyota kinda ruined the Tundras reputation. I know i wouldn't consider a new tundra if i was in the market.
