Nice tank...I want to build one. Right now I have a 28g nano but I want something on my desk. I'm thinking a few gallons w/ pistol shrimp/goby, and maybe a firefish and some cuc. Do you think 100% water changes so often is actually necessary? It seems like you could get away with as little as a 20-25% change weekly or preferably a 50% every 10 days or so.
@gena915065 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would only do 100% change on something tiny like this pico. Otherwise...once a month is what I would do and recommend. Unless you feed heavily and/or house corals with higher needs for the elements and you don't dose. ...once a month is adequate. It really is your preference and what you observe works for your tank.

Are you doing 100% WC because of the size of the "tank", or do you do that in general with all your reef tanks? I would think 100% would be counterproductive.
@gena915066 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's because of the size of the jar. I wouldn't do that with anything over 5 gallons. And if you have fish (which I don't) you can't do 100% water changes. In my case, with such a small water volume and no fish, 100% works great.
@jenniferbutel59936 жыл бұрын
How did you attach the rock to the side of the jar? Is it a magnet on the outside? Gorgeous reef jar!

Hi, thanks! Yes, it's a magnetic rock. I purchased it at a Reef show (Reefapalooza).

this is so great! do you have any fish or inverts at all or just coral?
@gena915066 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No fish or inverts. I've been meaning to pick up a snail or two but just haven't gotten around to it. I've been able to easily do the work of a clean up crew, myself, in this jar. So just coral.
@basboks87456 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, very good video. How do you attach the corals to the rock and what do you feed them? Does it help to put in macroalgea in as well to adsorb phosphate? Thanks!
@gena915066 жыл бұрын
Hi! I use epoxy and coral glue to attach the corals. Your LFS should carry both or you can order the products online at places like Marine Depot. I broadcast feed phytoplankton and I feed frozen mysis to my LPS and ricordeas. I think in such a small jar like this, the macroalgae would just outgrow the space. Water changes are much more effective, in my opinion.

Gena Reefs perfect! Thank you so much! Now looking back, do you like the fact you got a jar without the side tap or do you wish you had the tap? I mean I could see water changes being significantly easier, but even now they seem fairly easy? Lol

Hi. Nice reef jar! Every time I try to set one of these up, I get white slime, almost like cotton candy or snot tentacles - Some people say "just wait 6 weeks" or "just keep doing water changes & it goes way" - but it never goes away for me. Any idea how to deal with it?
@gena915066 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks! Do you only have this experience with a pico jar or any sized tank? If it happens with any tank, I'd say it's environmental. Maybe something sprayed, air freshener, candles, etc.
@captaingreenbeardscove83046 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking time to respond. I've had similar problems in fresh & salt, large & small tanks. I've even been able to grow white slime in a new plastic contains + distilled water + inorganic fertilizer w/ only the air as a source of microbial life. You're absolutely right, it is in my environment. Sometimes I think it could be unique spores in my environment. Sometimes I think it could be because I clean things with rubbing alcohol around my home, that might stimulate bacteria to grow faster than normal. (Or it could be both. I clean things near the work fish tank w/ rubbing alcohol & that tank never has white slime.) Recently I found an algae that can actually outgrow the white slime in fresh water. Maybe I'll find some way to make saltwater work too, or maybe not. I was hoping you might have new ideas for how to get rid of white slime
@gena915066 жыл бұрын
I really don't know. Other than removing the source that's causing it (if only you knew exactly what that was!). Have you tried any of the bacteria in a bottle? Dr. Tim's makes one...there are several other brands too. Seems like I remember reading that it can help. Best of luck with your battle!
@captaingreenbeardscove83046 жыл бұрын
Yes, I tried multiple bacterial in a bottle products. They tended to just make the white slime worse :( the source of the white slime could be spores int he air. I have been able to grow white slime in new plastic containers + distilled water + inorganic fertilizer with only the air as a source of microbial life. But recently I did find an algae in fresh water that could outgrow the white slime & keep the tank from self-destructing at least in fresh water.

how hard is it to start a small reef for beginner?
@gena915067 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your dedication. It shouldn't be hard at all. You need to understand the basics of reef keeping and also realize that with a smaller water volume there is less room for error. On something this small you can't just set it up and expect to be able to forget about it for weeks at a time. You'll will need to do water changes once a week, possibly even more than that. I would actually recommend something larger to gain experience and then try something like this out. Unless you already have lots of knowledge and dedication to offer your pico jar. It really depends on you :).
