Don't some lambda sensors stay at a fixed voltage?

Yes you are correct. They tend to be more well known as A/F (Air Fuel) Ratio Sensors or Broadband Sensors. The idea is that they will monitor the current draw to a pumping cell which is used to maintain the oxygen content within the measurement chamber in order to maintain a fixed voltage. There will though be a small change in voltage within the sensor that we can use as a quick check to confirm activity. Different manufacturers will have different specifications on the this voltage so it is always best to check the technical information to determine the correct test plan. We have some further reading on the Bosch 4.2 Broadband Oxygen Sensor on our website which can be found here - www.picoauto.com/library/automotive-guided-tests/bosch-lsu-4.2-broadband-oxygen-sensor/ and www.picoauto.com/library/training/bosch-lsu-4.2-broadband-oxygen-sensor. I hope this helps.
