Hmm... food art? Maybe accidental food art? Or light/wire fixtures that spell out words, or show pictures? Or maybe a video of historical figures and their inventions/what they're known for (especially lesser-known ones!)
0:44 And now nobody can afford houses, not even with two salaries

So right. That house was in Boston too, not the cheapest place even in 1964. Had to settle for a 92 square meter( ~1000 square foot) apartment that I have to pay about $650USD a month for the maintenance and housing association fees. At least it has increased in value.

@kenjcm2 жыл бұрын
@@kudzu_ When people talk about these things they often forget (or conveniently ignore...) a really important fact. Minimum wage back in the 1960's was just over a dollar. So someone on minimum wage only earned less than $2500 a year. Sure houses were cheaper back then, but people were also earning less back then. Even if you argue that property values are 10x what they were back then, we also earn 10x what we did back then. Property values RIGHT NOW has surged a bit, but go back a few years and it's very comparable in terms of income to property value when you compare the two times... So no, it wasn't so much easier back then, it's pretty close to being the same...

Very nice. My mother was born in 1911, and myself in 1950 (I was a very late family addition!); so many evocations of her past and mine.

My dad was born in 1950 as well. And I just realized it's a shorter time from 1911 to 1950 than from 1950 to 1987 when I was born. It doesn't ferl like it for some reason.

Idk why but I always wonder about the fate of those people, what kind of lives they had, etc. It's sad knowing all of the animals shown have passed years ago.

Those hairdos in the sixties were hilarious. I don't remember any one looking like that.
@ronw4842 жыл бұрын
I do. In my elementary and middle school in the mid-60's, so many girls had their hair piled so high on their heads that it ruined class pictures. The girls were too short to put in the back of the photos but, as a result of their hair being piled up on top of their heads and being put in more forward positions, this resulted in other students' faces being completely blocked out. Rules were then put into place prohibiting such hairstyles for class pictures but there was always that one girl whose mother would still send her to school with an inappropriate hairstyle on picture day. It was an issue because these pictures were for sale to parents and parents were unwilling (naturally!) to pay for a class photo wherein their own child was completely hidden from view by a girl who had what looked like a full-grown Sasquatch sitting on top of her head.

I read all of these comments about how much "easier" it was back then since houses and cars were so cheap. I hope you guys realize that minimum wage back then was like a dollar. And in the 1950's it was like $0.60. Things cost more now, but we also make more. Things were not "so much easier" back then, it was about the same. Sure property values have spiked in the recent years, but if you don't look at that anomaly and look at the average cost for a house maybe 5 years ago and compare it to average income, it's pretty comparable to the ratio back then as well. So ultimately it still boils down to saving up money and working hard to get what you want. If you're spending $1000 for a new phone every year, $5 for coffee everyday, and $100 a month on all of the various streaming services you're subscribed to, don't wonder why you can't save up enough money to pay a mortgage...

The house bought on a milkman's salary. (And most likely the wife didn't work out side the home) Young people today bitch and moan about how its impossible to be able to buy a house today. But let's not forget; when this house was purchased, people went without everything but the basics, and just bought furnishings etc as they could afford them. Today, a house has to have every mod con known to man, landscaped gardens, pool, etc. Not to mention several coffees a day, meals out, closets full of the latest fashion... the list goes on. We used the boxes that things were packed in, with a tablecloth on top, as side tables, we borrowed things from our families, we didn't have 2 cars, so when we walked to the shop and passed a house with a nice garden, we asked for a cutting. It took many years to fully establish a home. Even replacing a pair of shoes had to be planned for. Clothes were hand me downs. Clothing washed by hand for years, getting that first washing machine....you thought you were the luckiest person on earth!! No fast food, and more importantly, no wasted food. I could cite many more. Yeah, we were real lucky!!
