Thank you so much for this video! I am an architect and it makes me really happy to see someone speaking so warmly about their home, especially when it is a building I love. Sheffield seems to have been a promised land of social housing, it's a shame they have not been preserved.

I lived with my nannan on Cleveland St in Upperthorpe for a few months in 1976. We, the local kids, used to walk over Daniel Hill to play on Kelvin's big slide that was sort of built into the hill. It was brilliant. At the time it seems absolutely massive to us. Tried to find photos online of it, but no luck.

So sad in a way, splitting up a community. just hope the residents went on to better places. Love the snaking design.I'd have loved to have lived there for a sense of community. They used to frow tvs off the top. Doubt they'd do it if the building was still standing, TV's cost too much. Loved the girls story she came across as a really nice person. Thank you for sharing.

Had friends on Edith Walk...had some great nights on the Flats....and don't forgot the graff msg that was sprayed on the frontage, about the 'Boro events...'The Police are not 100% to blame'...that was a hell of a statement back in the day... that is still stuck firmly in my memory...Sheffield has some serious history...x

I remember when I used to go past on the 83 bus to the match. Probably 1981 onwards...Kelvin always scared me a bit!! Also remember walking past when it was empty and ready to be knocked down...probably early 90’s...seemed a lot scarier as it was dark and silent.

Oohh it did happen though I can tell you some real bad stories!... But let's not move away from the positives of Community sticking together and the wonderful Architecture that was Kelvin Flats!! The Community that lived there was very diverse.... Ranging from people with their own business, family's, student's, etc etc but we all looked after one and another... If someone had no food or was having a bad time we would pull together as a Community to help that person. I made life long friends x

I'm sure I've met the lady with the coloured hair in this video when I was in Sheffield 20 years ago for a nostalgic visit. I did live in the city from 1986 to 1988, never saw Kelvin Flats, but remember the derelict ones at Broomhall- they were supposed to be terrible to live in- and Hyde Park rising above the city, another eyesore that's long gone.

They missed a trick really, that still standing now so close to kelham, on the tram route, would be the same as Park Hill is now, booming, flats would be let before they were refurbed. Trouble is, it would only be done up for yuppies and priced accordingly. Locals would be excluded, there would be no social housing in it.

lived on kelvin new this lady sam, it was a great place only minutes from town or hillsbrough,the odd arguments were usually some idiot playing loud music, when i left i saw a light on in my ex father in laws house so i went up ,some immigrant family had been moved in just until the few months before kelvin came down,an inspector came to my flat to examine everything was in place, it was and i was told i could leave, a year later i got a bill for radiator thermostats that they said were missing, i told them while i had been left i had called at my old flat to pick up any letters and had met several different people who had been moved in temporarily so the council had to change their mind about the bill if they weren't there when i was there why did the inspector pass it so i could move,thats the council for you....there were other things they tried but i wont go into it ....

It's a good film, but some people got short memories. I remember people moaning about Hyde Park and particularly Kelvin saying they should have kept the terrace streets, and how horrible the flats were and dumping ground for problem tenants.
@richallenxbox1976
@richallenxbox1976 3 жыл бұрын
As if it wasn't rough enough up in s2, the Council, in their "infinite wisdom" brought all the Chavs down into s6, and then when the Kelvin was demolished in the mid 90s, they moved all the "problem tenants" off there up Stannington, previously the estates in what's now called lower Stannington were full of Pensioners and families who'd lived on there for generations, including about 3 generations of my Dad's side of the family between Fairbarn Place, Liberty Hill and Hall Park Head.

Back in the 80s and early to mid 90s the Kelvin was full of Chavs IMO, very rough, and then when they knocked the Flats down the Council, in their er, "infinite wisdom" moved some of the nutters off there up Stannington, onto the Liberty Hill estate etc, a once respectable area full of Pensioners and families who'd lived there for Donkey's years. I used to attend a "Youth Club" on there at the Community Centre back in the late 80s/early 90s as well because back then I lived in lower Walkley.
