I’m obsessed with the way Groban kind of spits out the word “pet”, it may not have been intentional, but I feel it totally highlights how Sweeney really is obsessed with the IDEA of Johanna and always used the idea of her as an excuse to get revenge by any means possible. The way that this song is composed is so fascinating to me because you realize you are listening to two different men who essentially don’t know anything about her kind of idolize and dream about her in different ways, putting her on a pedestal. Meanwhile she’s a real person trying to escape her abusive and scary situation. It reminds me of the song Esmeralda from Hunchback- three different men projecting their own wishes and desires onto a woman who is just trying to survive. (To be clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Anthony longing for her, but I mean he obviously doesn’t know her lmao) If you made it to the end of this TED Talk, congrats

The “Hunchback of Notre Dame” score was heavily influenced by “Sweeney Todd”, and its used of the Dies Irae.

@@ChienaAvtzon There's even a song Judge Turpin has to himself (referred to as "Johanna (Mea Culpa), creepily expressing his lust for Johanna while whipping himself to climax before ultimately deciding to try to marry her. Also in that scene(coming after the reprise of the Ballad of Sweeney Todd after The Shaving Contest) is where we see Johanna sneakily take the latch key she gives to Anthony later on. It was cut from the Original Broadway production during previews(though it is featured in the cast album, been included in the licensed score by Sondheim's insistence, and has been performed in more recent revivals and concerts[though it is most likely not in this revival here]), but you could say that it is also itself a MUCH more disturbing precursor to Hellfire in Hunchback. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3aYho2ciNSbftk

@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 - Oh, yes…. I am well-aware of that horrific and grotesque song that makes “Hellfire” look like child’s play. When a song is deemed too disturbing for a musical about serial killers and cannibalism, it is on a whole different level of evil. One has to wonder what Stephen Sondheim’s reaction was when Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz managed to convince Disney to allow “Hellfire” in a family film?
@lionmuesli4321 Жыл бұрын
I don't think he uses Johanna for revenge I do think she motivates him. At least not in this rendition. But he is very much obsessed with the idea of her being the little girl he left back then

For some reason I love the silhouette of Annaleigh against the fiery oven and the change of the music to a hectic tune from the old beggar woman. Perfectly blended (baked) together.

Listening to audience reactions for various productions of this show from the 1979 original, to London 1980, etc. and people always laugh at this scene. It's meant to be jarring the way he's softly singing yet the bodies are thrown like trash into the chute.
@BlackCatBritt Жыл бұрын
It can be very jarring to those who've never seen it before. I saw it in person and it does look very real even though you know it's stage trickery.

We recently talked about this scene at university (I study Musical Theatre) for this reason. My lecturer said that a happy melody with awful lyrics or while doing terrible things is a way of creating comedy. Sort of the same vein as You'll Be Back from Hamilton or To Keep My Love alive from A Connecticut Yankee. So I suppose they're justified to laugh

The tempos are correct for each performer: Antony lost and longing, Sweeney bored, waiting for his chance, absent-mindedly killing off his customers, Johanna lonely and distraught, and the beggar woman frantic and gradually going crazier.

@printeredlasered Жыл бұрын
This isn't remotely the same as seeing a performance live. Think of it as a concert video. People who wanted to see this would have bought tickets already, and most people don't live in the US. If anything videos have made me go to see shows more as I've been made aware of different performers and gone to see them in other productions, or wanted to experience the staging in the video in person.
