I think the key word with Katia is “TRIES” - but you can see from the way she tears up talking about Sergei, the way Daria can smile at her - it’s clearly a situation where you force yourself to go on living, but you NEVER get over it. And Scott Hamilton nailed it when he said once that “part of her went away with him.” And something I think some people aren’t aware of - TWO people died that day - all of Sergei and Half of Katia.

You can tell that she's never gotten over it. Twenty-three years later, when this aired, and she's never gotten over it. And now it'll have been twenty-five years since he died. Imagine that you have everything, literally everything, at 22 years old you have reached just all. And then you lose all. The magnitude of her drama is huge and life long just because through losing him she has lost everything: love, future, career, glory and even money. I often think of her as a woman of incredible internal strength, as it is not at all easy to survive decently a trauma of such scale. And as we can see, the longer is the life, the deeper is the gap. The mere fact that now, 25 years on she organises tribute shows says it all.

Yes it was. When I heard the news at work that day, I was of no use for the rest of the day. Fortunately, my boss was a huge figure skating fan and his 16-year-old daughter was doing a little competitive figure skating at the time, so he totally got it. He knew what I was feeling. I cannot absorb the thought of the loss that Katia was experiencing: the loss of the love of her life, her career, her skating partner, her best friend, her lover, her husband, the father of her child, and on and on-especially, the future she had anticipated, all the years they were together, of what their later years would be like...walking hand in hand through all of life together. My heart is still broken for them and can never be mended.

In an interview filmed for the Celebration of a Life in Hartford, she is in front of a fireplace and says, “Those were the best years of my life with Sergei. I don’t think anything will bring me the happiness I had with Sergei. I just don’t think it’s possible.” Then she goes onto say that she will raise Daria and she will be the “happiest girl ever.” I agree with those who said the light in her eyes has not been the same since he died. I’m happy she has found love with other men since Sergei, and I have a sense she cherishes and knows that her love with Sergei doesn’t happen ... it’s once in a lifetime.

My mom’s good friend lost her husband to a heart attack and left his 4 year old son behind, who like Daria, has no real memories of their dad. the greatest blessing for this couple is that they experienced a great rare love in their best years and that they were blessed with a child of this love....the loss of her husband hurt her deeply but their baby strengthened her and was the reason she endured his loss, his death over the time matured her even more and I believe she understood more now how rare it is what the two of them experienced... great loves are unique and important when they are full of positive emotions when one lives for the other and try the best, Sergei was a really special men and he still lives inside Katya s mind and soul she keeps him alive with every way and she try the people to not forgot him....excellent couple, nice people mentally, nice families from behind with honesty, seriousness, they give to their children love, kindness and respect and that's why these children came out first of all worthy people...Katia is a rare person like Sergey was really like them both.... excellent people and athletes....

They were living such a great moment in their lives in many levels as a couple, competitors, parents, living a dream ....then death took that away !!!!!... ...I have a partner , who I love with all my heart and having projects with.I CAN'T imagine if he die, he's my love and best friend! Scott I think has always been like a second dad to Daria, it'd be really lovely if he walked Daria down the isle I think Sergei would approve of that. True life fairy tale of a soul mates. They were so lucky. We all search for this deep love and connection that makes our heart skip a beat. They were perfection on and off the ice. Katie was the pillar of strength and grace. She was 24. Daria is definitely her father’s daughter. It’s almost spooky how much she looks like Sergei. Kati is obviously still has great love for Sergei. That kind of bond only happens once and only if your really lucky, G&G we’re amazing to watch then and still remain perfection on the ice. Sergei is loved and missed always. How does a person ever get over the loss of a love that deep? They had the extra bonus of being the best pair team. She suffered a double loss. Her grace and strength are amazing.

They must be burdened with extreme jealousy. I love G&G. I’m jealous of how much they were soul mates but only because this is the level of love I haven’t found and I’ve been married 21 years. Katia lost her husband but also her pair skating career. Only the clueless with no heart or understanding of the true love this beautiful couple shared could not like this story. They were pure magic. In life and on the ice. My heart is still broken for all three of them.
