This happened to me this morning. One of these beautiful Pied crows visited me . But just as I went to get My phone, it flew off. Thank you so much for capturing this.

I love these Birds. They chase off predators like Hawks that eat the smaller birds who come yo me to get fed mornings and evenings. So, one morning while putting food out for the Birds, I heard a voice in my mind saying "What about us?" Then I looked up, and sitting on a Powerline structure were 2 Pied Crows looking directly at me. That was the day I started feeding them either raw beef or Bread, depending on what I could afford at the moment. And when they are out of sight at feeding time, all I have to do is make my unique call sound and look up. It amazes me to sometimes see them flying fast towards me from over 1000m. This tells me that their hearing is outstanding. I wonder how they do it even with the ambient traffic noise of Lagos. A big and noisy city. 2 pairs of them come calling every morning and evening now. They sit on high Poles around my residence and start calling to let me know they have arrived.

Birds generally can hear very well. I guess they have learnt to hear above the din of human activity. They probably also know roughly what time you normally feed them. Crows are extremely intelligent birds. They are one of the few birds that have evolved to use tools. Like they will pick off a little twig and use it to dig out food. There are videos on the internet showing scientists testing them and they can quickly learn to access food by following various steps.

There were some of these hanging out in Chennai, India, at the airport exit and entrance at 2 am. It was nighttime which I thought was strange. There didn’t appear to be any food around. I had just flown in from Hong Kong and I was totally out of it from the first trip from S.F. and landing in Chennai that late. There was this ugly lighting coming down from the building construction area. There was no place to sit as I waited for my ride. These birds were so peculiar in that moment but in my tired state all I could say in my head was what? What? What IS that? What ARE those.

I didn't know their range extended so far north. They are quite nomadic here in southern Africa.

A crow is much smaller than a Raven, why isn't this bird call a Pied Raven instead, because it resembles a raven more than it does a crow?

Never seen a pied crow before. It’s not a magpie either.
