Patrick can actually work as antagonist and there are some cases were it does work such as in "Suds" how he was harming Spongebob yet he did it for good intentions and even in that case he got what he deserved in the end.

True Patrick may have been the antagonist in "I'm With Stupid" yet I don't think I'd call him a jerk he was actually pretty nice to Spongebob in the beginning but keep I'm mind Spongebob was the one who offered to be the dummy Patrick was literally so stupid that as the episode went on he actually believed that he was smarter than Spongebob

I can take a stab at the answer before watching the video. Basically he is not a good antagonist when his antagonism hinges upon his sheer stupidity or selfishness, Pet Sitter Pat, Stuck in the Wringer, Yours Mine and Mine etc. Patrick's stupidity is only good in doses, it is not strong enough to carry an episode. We've seen time and time again with episodes hinging on his stupidity get annoying VERY quickly. Same applies for him being a jerk especially when he's rarely if ever called out for being a jackass. He makes a good antagonist when they actually go to his more vulnerable and insecure side. Like Big Pink Loser, where his actions are based upon he's jealous of Spongebob who seems way more driven and accomplished than he is. That also comes into play in the Fry Cook Games. Those episodes actually add a bit more depth to him.

I have a suggestion for a square theory, how about Why Do writers always stick to the same theme of each character and not changing them. What I mean by that is... -SpongeBob being naive -Patrick being stupid -Squidward getting tortured - Mr Krabs being obsessed with money - Plankton obsessed with stealing the secret formula etc...

My favorite Patrick antagonist episodes are snowball effect, Patrickman, the golfing episode, The one where he frees man ray, dumped, and that one episode where they tried to spy on plankton.
@MrDalewin3 жыл бұрын
@Hannah Papernick-Yudin yeah, nobody ever talks about that episode, but at least it doesn’t get unnecessary hate, either, so that’s something. Also, about the golfing episode, I’m not so sure why I liked that one. I don’t hate that episode, but while it started out funny and regular enough, it got to be really stupid, and not in that funny childish way you would expect from SpongeBob, but in the Brain destroying childish way parents would stereotype the show as back in its heyday.

Patrick can be straight up malicious in some episodes. He almost goes out of his way to do something ridiculous or hurtful at times, which comes off as less of a stupid selfish bully being a jerk for laughs, and more of a true hostile antagonist trying to undermine the main character...
@RyanStorey12318 жыл бұрын
My least favorite pre-movie (first movie) episode is "Dumped" because of how cruel and antagonistic Patrick is. People usually like to scrutinize and declare "I'm With Stupid" and "The Big Snail Race" as the worst pre-movie SpongeBob episodes, but I have legitimate rebuttals as to why those episodes work. However, nobody ever talks about "Dumped" and how cruel and malicious it is. It is by far the worst episode in early SpongeBob. It's probably the precursor to the "Patrick's-A-Prick" archetype that was soon established later in the series. In "Dumped", Patrick literally steals SpongeBob's beloved pet and proceeds to act smug, entitled, and overall apathetic to SpongeBob's plight. How can Patrick just vacantly stare disapprovingly at SpongeBob as he breaks down and begs for Gary to come home? It's not the worst episode in the series and it's a piece of art compared to the other antagonistic "Patrick's-A-Prick" episodes that would come in later seasons, but it is the episode I hated the most as a child and it is an episode that many people fail to acknowledge when the subject of bad pre-movie episodes is brought up.

Patrick can be good antagonist when him and spongebob get too caught up in a game like in Castles in the Sand where two weren't being cruel each other they both just wanted to win. But one of worst example is in Your Mine and Mine where Patrick isn't only a jerk but a stupid spoil child and the ending truly pissed me off because after spongebob buys a toy he says he'll " share " with Patrick not only that Patrick purposely keeps the toy away from spongebob but he also destroys when he gets cornered. And on top of that when Mr. Krabs makes more toys Patrick offers to buy them with SpongeBob's money and got the nerve to ask him " Have you learned nothing about sharing? "

You people seem to overlook it too.
@daliborjovanovic5108 жыл бұрын
You`re the one missing the point here dude, he`s focused on Squidward being tortured so much because that`s the main point of episode like Good Neigbours where it`s handeled poorly resulting in the episode being unfunny and obnoxious, also what the hell are you talking about SpongeBob & Patrick realized they screwed up and they actually did something to make it right? I feel like Squidward makes a better Jerk friend character to Spongebob Then Patrick The reason is that Squidward is arrogant and selfish,Thats his character so it works. Squidward is not only a jerk to Spongebob and Patrick But hes also a jerk to Mr Krabs and Gary. In Lost Mattress,Squidward takes credit for Spongebob and Patrick's idea to get Mr Krabs a new Mattress,He isn't doing this to make his boss happy he wants a reward and thats it. in I was a teenage gray,Squidward takes advantage of the fact that Spongebob is going out of town and pertins to Babysit Gary to get a break from him,He doesn't care about Gary. Also Squidward is show in episodes like Claws,Pressure and Pizza deliver,That he's more of a Arrogant friend that cares about Spongebob even thought he gets annoyed by him. With Patrick as a Jerk friend doesn't fit it because thats not his character at all,The best example of this is Yours Mine and Mine. Patrick is so unlikable jerky and it just goes overboard in this episode. Because the Writers since they don't have Hillenburg to run to the show,They have No derision with Patrick,They have to change Patrick character, they can't write for him at all.

See, I think that the better episodes where Patrick is the antagonist are the ones where Patrick acts virtually nothing like his typical personality. For example, in Patrick Smartpants, due to his head falling off and SpongeBob accidentally replacing it with brain coral, Patrick becomes a genius and therefore better than everyone he knows. That is the polar opposite of how his character is typically portrayed and it makes sense in an episode such as this that he would be a complete jerk to everyone and go so far as to tell SpongeBob that he no longer wants to be his friend. The other episode that works, but to a lesser degree is the one where Patrick finds out he is related to royalty and gets an over inflated ego and becomes a horrible pseudo king/prince or whatever. That episode works a bit because he is not the typical Patrick we know and are mostly annoyed by due to his inane stupidity. The ones where they don't work as well are the ones where he is naturally good at something SpongeBob has taken years to perfect or accomplish and rubs his success in his friend's face. Two good examples of those episodes are the one where Patrick gets his license and the one where he can execute a perfect karate chop on virtually anything every single time. Both of those things are something SpongeBob has spent practically a lifetime trying to accomplish and cannot and therefore gets jealous that Patrick can do them without even think about it. Patrick's jerkiness in those episodes stems not so much from a virtual change to either his personality or his status in life, but from the realization that someone may be stupider than him at certain things. Where these episodes go even further into scumbob territory is that other characters, especially SpongeBob tell him that he's being a jerk and he doesn't seem to stop or want to stop until it's too late. The other types of Patrick antagonist episodes that I do tend to like are those where in some way both he AND SpongeBob are the antagonist depending on the situation. Examples of these kids of episodes are Rock a by Bivalve, Sand Castles in the Sand, and Battle of Bikini Bottom. In all of those episodes Patrick and SpongeBob are continually fighting with one another. Both have very valid points as to why they are right, but one isn't all that much jerkier than the other. Battle of Bikini Bottom is borderline scumbob for me only because of the constant gross out close ups. So, to sum up, Patrick does much better as an antagonist when he is, 1. acting in a polar opposite manner personality wise to how he typically acts and 2. is spending most if not the entire episode fighting in some way with SpongeBob and SpongeBob is fight right back.

i saw that you put the episode where Patrick becomes a king as a scumbob episode, I would have put it as a meh episode and here is why, we have seen through out cartoons that sometimes whenever a character gets a position of power the power sometimes goes to there head, this has happened to garry before as well, we see this the best in the spongebob movie out of water where garry becomes king of the snails and betrays spongebob in a way, garry is a smart character so if that could happen to a smart character what do you think it will do to Patrick. also as you said Patrick is like a child and child can see things and in a way mimic them or adopt them in there traits or something like that, and with that there is evidence that both spongebob and Patrick reflect on each other like in one episode spongebob had done something stupid with the plastic thing that he go from his news paper, and after a few minutes we saw Patrick had done the same. so they both reflect on each other

Patrick's stupidity prevents him from seeing the error of his ways.

What posters are left of the "Gravity Falls" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender" ones?

I think the one directly to the left of Avatar: The Last Airbender is Rocko's Modern Life

I can't really explain it, but pre movie spongebob had a surreal type of vibe to it. I guess it carries certain things for me, like the characters' behaviour and the equally intentive plot. As time went by and the art changed, this feeling kind of just... disappeared. Were we too accustomed to the world by now, or did we need to see new settings? To be honest, I don't know. From what I have seen so far, season 9 has brought back some of that vibe, but requires a bit more editing to otherwise be good. (Keep in mind I haven't watched the newer episodes. My opinion will probably change). Post movie spongebob can be good, that I truthfully admit, but its lacking some of that magic that pre movie used to have. Its different somehow, like a soft reset. I think its because of the animation/voice change as well as the choice in music. I feel that if I put some of the dialogue into pre movie episodes, it would get back some of the magic, granted the lines are actually good. This is why (as I might had said before) Patrick as antagonist works for me in the older seasons, and the zany combination of things pushes the aspects for me. Anyone gotten the same feeling?

It just really makes me cringe that SpongeBob couldn't have ended on a high note.

I know it's so sad. I always saw it as a future classic even before 2004. It's Nickelodeons fault they pushed it on. I actually heard Nick got a new Presidnt in 2002. The older President didn't let shows go so long where'd they become stale. Dumb new President.

Yeah I just watched the new episodes of season 10, and nothing's really improved. The episodes were very boring and were rehashes of older post movie episodes. The biggest change was with the facial reactions. They look too expressive and really gross. But overall it seems to be better than season 7 or 8.

Alex G yeah. I know right. I'm fine with the season 2-5 look, but now they look a bit too bright in Spongebob's case and overly detailed with random side characters. I guess they're trying to make the one off side characters more memorable by adding extra detail. It's really just kind of distracting.

it doesn't work in yours mines and mine cause there's no comedic slant to Patricks selfishness. it works in the battle of bikini bottom cause it's more relatable and more funny
