In my honest opinion, there was no good reason to continue The Simpsons after the movie. The movie should have just been a series finale. Just to prove how few ideas they have, several seasons ago, they killed off Fat Tony...only to replace him with his identical cousin (they even have the exact same voice). Sweet Jebus, just *end*!

Shirogane_7 The problem isn't the amount of episodes, it's the characters and setting staying the same. As PieGuy mentions, Pokémon at least changes the setting and some of the characters once in a while (usually when there's a new season).

It wasn't really something to make a point, just an observation. The number of episodes isn't the problem, I agree. The anime does suffer from a lot of problems that are similar to Simpsons like Pieguy stated in the video, even if they change the companions and problem.

I just can't stand how much The Simpsons has gone from a funny show with real life morals to a cheap, shallow product placement trademark fest with iPhones, social media references and memes. In the old episodes when characters spoke, I heard the characters. Now all I hear when Homer bleats on about Twitter is a bored actor in a booth with a script in his hands. Also, celebrity guests in the old episodes made sense or were a pleasant surprise, now they just make an episode around a celebrity.

The show started the year I was born (1989). That does not include the fact that the Tracey Ullman Show Simpson shorts predate me by two years (1987). As a standalone show, The Simpsons have been around as long as I have been on planet Earth. Not to mention that South Park, Family Guy, and Spongebob have been around most of my life. I was 8 and 10 respectively when those latter three shows started. There is now a generation that was not even alive when all of these shows started. Pretty soon, I am going to start taking medication pills and looking into a retirement home in the idea that I am getting old.

Greetings, I come from the year 2100 WWIII just ended and the Simpsons is still running. The original voice actors, writers, and creator died many years and were replaced with robots so that their voices last forever. Fox had just recently announced that the show has been renewed for their 200th. A majority of the population is tired of seeing the same family never grow old. Cancel the show! As much as I love the Simpsons, I would really like to see them do something different and new.

I feel they try to force everything. They had 'killed' Homer's mom like 3 times before doing it for good, and they made her appear to an awfully bad episode which tried too hard to be emotive but was just one of the worst episodes ever (you know, that one where Homer wets the bed and the professor, which for a strange reason always stalks the family and has the most boring and lame episodes, makes the family enter their dreams); the Treehouse of Horrors are just popular movies (not even from horror or terror) like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter or James Bond (REALLY?! They did Edgar Allan Poe, Dracula and other worldwide acclaimed horror stories before; the possibilities are infinite and they just do teen Lisa-esque things); the references have become unnecesary and overdone (there are episodes where they just say actor/brand/famous thing's names for no reason); some characters, like Lisa, are just out of character: they made her a moralfag which always gets into every family member's life to see why are they happier and force them to keep things normally instead of letting them encourage their mistakes, specially with Bart; while others have been reduced from interesting characters to bad jokes, like Krusty, Mr. Burns or Sidekick Bob; also Milhouse, which can be REALLY annoying. They also don't have simple -but many times emotive- episodes, like Bart stealing a game or Homer trying to lose weight, to Lady Gaga or some unnnecesary hipster bullshit involving, again, Lisa or Homer most of the times. Also, illogical stuff like Apu's kids growing but Maggie staying the same, or the Simpsons being a somewhat poor family to giving everyone an HD TV, PC's/Tablets/Laptops everywhere and a lot of time incoherences (Homer and Marge's childhood is now at the same time as when Bart was first born; future episodes don't have any sense now because they've made like 10 alternative futures but made like 2 of them connect themselves). You can't just push a show for a long time like The Simpsons without making it evolve completely.

Considering there's 600 episodes, I'm surprised The Simpsons never entered bad territory. Yes there are a lot of bad episodes here and there, but on the whole the newer seasons are just mediocre. That's something it has over shows like Family Guy and SpongeBob, because those shows went bad faster than The Simpsons have. But at least the cast and crew of The Simpsons love their show. FOX cancelled the show in 2011, but the cast and crew all agreed to a pay cut to have the show continue. With about 500 episodes at the time, you'd think everyone would just be relaxing and taking in royalty checks, but no, they wanted to make more. But in 2013 FOX found a loophole that allowed them to sell the show in syndication while the show is still producing new episodes, so I guess that point is moot now.

honestly I'd like for Pieguy to tackle on Family Guy too because at least for the most part, The Simpsons isn't making itself worse; whereas Family Guy continue to be as offensive, sexist, disturbing, stupid and mean-spirited. Not the mention, I find Family Guy more repetitive than The Simpsons. Almost all episodes are one character acting shitty and screwing up something that is unforgivable but they apologize and the issue is fixed in a second and that's worse than Simspons doing this because at least the characters of The Simpsons can still be likeable. Although I gotta admit season 14 and 15 so far are more tolerable than horrendusness of season 12 and 13 but still there isn't an episode that doesn't have at least one shock comedy or offensive content or sterotypes anymore. Family Guy deserves cancelation just like The Simpsons, if not more. Great video Pieguy.

The biggest problem I have with The Simpsons is the tonal shift, all the scenes are just setups for jokes and they no longer try to stick to a single narrative, every act is its own story that has no satisfying resolution.

Even the more "unique" ideas are being reused. Marge running a pretzel stand to her running a sandwich shop (or any episode where she gets a job and then becomes a stay at home mom again at the end of the episode), and then maybe I'm just imagining things but did they do a plot where Homer and Bart bond on a boat twice? I also think the plots where The Simpsons do extraordinary things really is stretching the suspension of disbelief. What are the odds of Homer and Marge competing in the Olympics, Lisa being BFFs with Lady Gaga, and an average suburban family having the money to travel across the world as often as they do?

(I guess going to space is more extravagant than being a referee but the space program picked Barney and Homer BECAUSE they were unspecialized average joes, not in spite of it. icecream hero They're dysfunctional, but they're essentially supposed to be a suburban family. Bart's not a rock star, Lisa isn't a teacher at Harvard, and The Simpsons aren't living in a mansion where they swim in money like Scrooge McDuck. They live in an average house and pretty much live an average life in an average town unless the plot wants them to be extraordinary. The earlier seasons dealt with a lot of slice of life plots (Bart being bad at school, Homer and Marge's relationship, etc.) The Simpsons don't have to be ridiculously extraordinary in certain episodes to be entertaining.

I agree with your point, even shows with ongoing storylines know to switch up some characters and concepts to keep the intrest, this is why a lot of animes still have viewers after long years of running, and they also take more time to tell their stories, sometimes a bit too much time in my opinion, but still

While I'm not too hard on the series for it's decline, as it definitely does generate good laughs especially more recently, I can understand what you're getting at with the retreading of ideas. The way you put it is different then any way I ever thought about it. I feel as though, the best way for The Simpsons to improve, is to be like King of the Hill (or now South Park) and tell one full story using all the characters in one season. This doesn't have to change the series format. If you watch King of the Hill, you can barley tell that they're telling long stories throughout the seasons (Well, the first half of seasons), but that's part of what makes it smart. If The Simpsons does that, it'll work with the situational humor and dry wit that the series is so very good at and they might just come back on top. I don't know, maybe do it for season 30 or something.

Why don't you talk about a show that is also written to be comedy focussed and zany? I still think the first 8 seasons are legendary AND still hold, and 9 and 10 are pretty good, but after that things get iffy. Not horrible, but they do seem to lose some of the spark. I do think they could reinvigorate it, but it would take a heavy retooling or really good writers managing to replicate what the show originally did.

At the very least, it isn't family guy awful, but it won't get better. I'm still surprised spongebob had gradually improved over the last year, but a show with seasonal rot rarely improves or at least in a noticeable way. Simpsons just needs to be put to rest. It is just standing their like that neighbor that does nothing but still hangs around. The show is just mediocre and I still don't get where the audience comes from to keep the show alive other than reruns of older seasons and merchandise. That's all the Simpsons has become, an empty shell that will never change until it gets canceled, even then, the only time that will happen is when a major voice actor dies, but knowing fox and their habit of elongating franchises, they will find a way to make the Simpsons live forever.

Since it is a character-based show, if there were any chance of the characters growing and evolving as individuals in a substantive way from episode to episode, that'd be a boost to some of the stories they could tell, especially the more dramatic or serious narratives. But by doing that, you also are then most likely changing what has made those characters unique in their 20-some year history, and a character can only go through so many changes before it too grows old and maybe ridiculous in some cases. It's a catch 22 situation, as PieGuy says.

The Don Hertzfeldt couch gag was freaking brilliant, which is to be expected from an auteur of his caliber. It's one of those things that makes me happy knowing even exists, and that the show totally let that parody of its seasonal rot fly shows that they at least are self-aware.

Cyberbrickmaster1986 Don Hertzfeldt's most famous work is probably his short "Rejected", which went viral in the early 2000's. If you haven't seen it, look it up here on youtube, it's hysterical. Recently, however, he's been doing more serious(?) work, like his "It's Such a Beautiful Day" trilogy, and "World of Tomorrow" both of which are phenomenal and on netflix. The latter even was nominated for an Oscar. His films look simplistic because he animates entirely by himself, but the camera effects and photography he utilizes in his work is mind-blowing and more than makes up for his simplistic style. I highly suggest you check the three previously mentioned films/shorts out. His couch gag was featured in the season 26 premiere "Clown in the Dumps". It's the longest the series has ever done at about 2 1/2 minutes, and is kind of a bizarre/satirical short about the series' seasonal rot. Again, it's on youtube, I suggest checking it out!

How much of the newer episodes have seen because they're definitely changing up enough stuff. Sure there are only five main characters, but there's a million secondary and tertiary characters that can have stories made about them without things going through rot. They've also been doing more changes to the form. One of the best episodes of the series was an episode called Barthood (which was a parody of boyhood, but I actually didn't realize that until my second viewing) which dealt with Bart having to grow with the problems any kid in his crappy situation would through while growing up. And that was a season 26 episode. I don't agree with everything nostalgia critic has said, but if there's one thing I definitely agree with, it's that great characters don't change, but situations do. The entire show shifts with the real world, and with new changes in everything going around us from technology to social policy, the Simpsons never runs out of material. You saying that because you know the flow of the episode and how the jokes are structured, the episode loses something is like saying loony tunes or tom and Jerry isn't very good because you see the slapstick coming. Just because you know a joke is there doesn't negate the comedic power of the joke. Otherwise stand up comedians would be out of a job.

I saw quite a bit for the purpose of this video, and just in general out of curiosity. Hundreds of characters, yet that changes little when the Simpsons still have to be in all of them, AND many of them amount to "Homer helps X find love" or some other such thing that's been done a million times. Yeah the show changes a little, but Ned dating Edna and her passing doesn't exactly change much of anything in the grand scope of things. Almost all changes are minor things, that may come into play once or twice a season, and don't have any bearing on the glut of rehashed story ideas. Loony Tunes and Tom and Jerry are shows that have gone through many forms, we are talking about one continuous show here, it's very different. Stand up comedians are also entirely different as they have no structure, and can be wildly different from one another. The Simpsons has structure, it has a formula, and a way of doing things that gets very easy to acclimate to over 600 episodes.

That really shows just how long the Simpsons has been going, and I haven't even watched it for several years. I love The Simpsons, but there clearly was a limit to how much could be done with the series. Matt Groening and the original writers probably also knew that, as they went on to make Futurama instead, and sadly, I think the only real solution is to make a different show with different possibilities.

A way I would suggest the show fix itself (apart from ending) is make less episodes per season, That way, there will be more time to work on storys and concepts which might not pay of but would have more thoughts and Ideas per episode. Also, maby they could get people who know the Characters inside out and try a fresh take on a old concept, or storys that haven't worked before from the classic seasons could be worked into something much greater. This is why Holiday's of future past and the book job are such a great episode, with the book job. You have characters who you've never seen together join up for once. With Holiday's of future past, the characters are in the future which is a fresh take on them and is why it's one of my all time favourites.

Sometimes, as a show gets older, they just need more time for creative control. Both "South Park" and "Arthur" have settled at a low 10 episodes per year, for example.

Hmmm...I still like how most of the The Simpsons episodes after Season 26 have their own unique credits music that sort of ties in with the episode's themes. It gives you a different feeling of ending than the traditional music. Of course, there are still some occasional episodes with the classic The Simpsons credits themes. If they did something like episodes that follow more secondary characters more often, it would be less stale, but if they started now, it would come of as gimmicky, drastic and jarring. This show is one of my favourites ever but its just a shell of its former self at this point and probably should have ended about 10 years ago. Even if it did they probably would have started a continuation or reboot at some point in the last few years.

I think the main thing the Simpsons has going for it now is that it's the only adult cartoon that has a wholesome edge to it. Everything else is too busy trying be raunchy or deep, but Simpsons maintains it's sweetness and innocent sincerity.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The reason why South Park and SpongeBob are able to still go on is because though there are occasionally episodes and moments that follow the drama of the characters, but the characters are usually just vehicles for the comedy/ satire. This is especially true with South Park (whether you like the new seasons are not though I personally am really enjoying them) which changes as reality making it possibly never get stale as long as the writer's talent and the show's quality get better or at least consistent

I'm sure standard contracts have changed since then, and even if they didn't, creators have been more clever with working around them. Heck, Matt Groening had arranged his other project, "Futurama" in such a way that he would have more creative control than he did for "The Simpsons", so there are ways around Fox's nonsense.

it is interesting you brought this up and i think a lot of us have thought this for a very long time. i’m a fan as of the last two years , i still remember for me - that is was really SS Bob’s character who got me interested because he seemed to be the only one with a real evolving story line. so when TreeHouse Of Horror annouced they’d let bob win for a change i though - sure i know it’ll go back to status quo but they have an opportunity here , to really explore more on who bob is rather than letting him turn into a gag character. they explored it a little and as always Grammar was excellent in role. but - it felt - like something was missing - they went in strong - extremely strong with something that did reflect episodes like Widower. and -- something happened - it relished in the cartoon nature of it using it to explore bob sure - but it felt - - after a while like it was a wash repeat --forced to be alive while remaining a dying concept. i was -- honestly suprised they never took the chance to explore what would have happened if his wife was still there -- a little nod to that fact would have been nice- we haven’t seen or heard from them since the Italian Bob i believe or shortly after. i know bob’s not on often because of cost for the voice actor , and its probably equally as hard to get the other cast memembers from Fraiser to come on for their roles. but - if ever was a time to shift focus and give a chance to revamping at least one character - that would have been it. and they missed it.

Digimon is also something that shifted. The first season dealt with the first group of kids, the second season continued the story with a new cast of characters while interacting with the old ones. Then when the third season hit, they really changed it up. Would that be another example of a show that has changed itself up? Another one would be Power Rangers. I also far prefer the Digidestined and the bonds with their human partners more than in Pokemon. They always refer to their Pokemon as it. I don't like that they refer to them as "it" because that means that they see them as objects rather than partners. Digimon were referred to as he and she like actual pets and partners. I like that a lot more.

How about those other shows like those daytime soap operas or long running anime series like Doraemon, Shinchan, or the more extreme example, Sazae-san? Those are also formulaic shows with sorta stagnant characters where you're stuck with those ensemble of characters yet still feel fresh to watch. Wonder why Simpsons couldn't do the same. Hell, even Doraemon did remade some episodes from the past, with better looking drawings, that is.

I know it’s been a year, but I done roughly an estimation of how much Simpsons we have since this video was made; using the official series & the movie. I used fractions of time to get it. 600 x 0.5 (0.5=30minutes)= 300hrs 300 + 1.5 (rounded it to half an hour as it's 27 minutes) =301.5hrs 301.5 divided by 24 (24=1 day) = 12.5625 days. 12.5625 days divided by 1 week (7) = 1.795 weeks adding specials, shorts and the old Tracey Oldman show episodes that's... roughly 2 weeks with no brakes or sleep to watch the WHOLE SERIES. Welp, have fun~

If theres 600 episodes and you times it by 30 minutes ( Considering it might be all 30 minutes per episode ), you'd probably get 18,000 minutes so it would probably be Probably 12.5 Days plus the movie and changing dvds and stuff or not, probably almost 13 days. While I do like some of the new episodes of The Simpsons, and they can be very clever at times still, I think the last truly great season personally was season 10. And while some point to 9 as the last great year, due to many staff members leaving after that season, Season 10 still felt like the Simpsons. It was still keeping with some of the old traits that we know and love, but they also experimented a little more than before with some episodes, some good, and some could've been improved. But I think one reason the Simpsons has been on for so long, I think is to make a record of the longest running animated series of all time, or maybe something along those lines. I read it's been renewed to Season 30, and while that may not be bad, still, the show has had many ups and downs. As the series went on, many new writers threw some plots together that really wasn't the best material for episodes, but then there are episodes that are very good, sometimes great and it feels like an episode from the first 10 years, but made later. I do like The Simpsons, but sometimes you have to end a good thing before it gets tiring. Breaking Bad is a show I watched for 6 years, and those five seasons were amazing, even when the series ended I wanted more. I wanted more Walter White, more Jesse Pinkman, just more. And while Better Call Saul is a great prequel to the show, bringing back characters we know and love, or like, and some new ones that are great, Breaking Bad ended before people started to say, "Breaking Bad? That show's still on?" By season 15 for sure, people were saying that as the quality did go down quite a bit. Still they had there great moments, sure, give credit where credit is due, but it wasn't the same. If The Simpsons ended after its 10th Season, people would view the series really, really positively, where now it's a mixed bag. It used to be phenomenal, now you can still say it's good, but the quality isn't as great anymore, and any real great episodes in the seasons after season 10 just aren't as memorable. I love The Simpsons, and I've been wondering about what the legacy of the show will be when it's over. Will people look at it very fondly, mixed or will they just think it became a complete waste of time? I guess time will tell when the show does end.

you know what i think a good solution would be? more future episodes/a spin off using the future characters. there's the extended family so more characters, the future aesthetic to change up the scenery and because the characters have aged up they can deal with different problems (except relationships, if there's one thing in the future episodes i hate it's how they fixate on bart being/ending up single)

I just got a Simpsons add before this video
