If Mayo needs another week off I wouldn't mind. Kermode and Ben make a great team. Haven't seen Mark quite this animated in awhile. Hoping for more episodes with them together.

I thought "Piercing" was brilliant, for many of the same reasons that Mark pointed out. But it really wouldn't have worked without the caliber of performances from Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott - their twisted chemistry was essential to holding everything together. Wasikowska was totally enthralling - she's amazingly versatile. Yeah, you definitely see the Cronenberg influence. Pesce is really someone to keep an eye on.

Without revealing anything, the ending completely ruins everything. It’s as if it didn’t know how to end it.

Actually loved the ending :) smart and successfully teasing as is the whole film, nice round-up :)

I liked the ending, which is abrupt like the novel, but with a little extra spin on it that keeps things open to ones imagination.

Shades of Cronenberg? I think I've found my favourite film of the year

This sounds interesting. The description reminds me of Take Me, which I was surprisingly taken with, by way of Cronenberg or Argento.

I'm surprised to hear this- I thought it was quite underwhelming myself! Admittedly, I had high expectations and new the gist of the story going in, but it only really felt like it was getting started when it ended. Plus, there's nothing all that shocking or extreme in it! It's well made but very "Yeah, okay"

Says a lot about me that I recognised that they lifted the end credits music from Dario Argento's Tenebrae

As a fan of Miike’s film version of Audition, I had mixed feelings. On one hand, I enjoyed watching the movie a great deal. I’m not well-versed in giallos, so I didn’t get that it was consciously calling back to gialli until I saw the soundtrack credits at the end. I did get Dressed To Kill-era De Palma vibes as soon as I saw the splitscreen scene, though, and Audition is certainly an extreme example of that genre, so I knew roughly what sort of movie it was trying to be, and as an exercise in genre style, it’s expertly done. I do think the characterization is a little thin and too much is left implied, but I can’t decide if those choices are purposeful, and iif they are, if I like those choices. Still, on a craft level, it’s pretty terrific. What I didn’t get from it was what I wanted out of a film marketed using the Audition connection - that is, a full-tilt third-act dive into squirm-inducing psychosexual mindf*** horror. Given some of the unsettling imagery that IS in the film, it feels weird to call it “restrained,” but when what in any other film would be the big freakout scene came, I took it as a preview of even freakier things to come. Then the movie ended, and I found myself going, “That’s it?” I’m told the book ends just as abruptly, but I’m not sure staying faithful to that aspect of the novel does the film any favors. So I dunno. If you like this kind of movie, I think Audition is a superior example of the form. At the same time, it would probably be strong drink for someone who hasn’t seen Audition, and if I hadn’t gone in expecting a spiritual sequel to Audition, I suspect I’d be praising this one, though I would likely still think it was too short. I’m mulling a second watch to see if I feel kinder toward it now that I know what’s coming. One thing I have no reservation about complimenting is the use of licensed music, which pairs so well with the images that I thought the instrumental stuff was written for the film until the aforementioned end credits. I wholeheartedly recommend checking the soundtrack out even if you never see the film.

This movie reflects Murakami's novel, just like "Audition" reflected that book. I've read both books and seen both movies. I think what "Piercing" has going for it that's different, beyond the fact that it doesn't have an overtly gore freaked-out ending, is psychological complexity - it has characters that really call for top level acting performances, which Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott deliver. Wasikowska is especially brilliant and she makes Jackie fully human. "Audition" wasn't big on that. So it depends on what you're looking for, your expectations. I loved both films and both books.
